View Full Version : *New* 15-inch Macbook Pro 2.66 -- Thanks Apple!!

Well, right now I am the happiest guy in the world. About a month ago (the 10th to be exact) I purchased the 2.53Ghz 15-inch Macbook Pro. It was a great machine, no problems for the time I had it. Then, Apple came out with the updated 2.66Ghz version the other day. It started to dawn on me that maybe I could have *that*...the allure of the newness drew me in.
I called the Apple Store to ask if I would still be able to swap my machine for the new one, even though it was passed the 14 day window. The sales person was pretty adamant that I could not. That was cool, I mean really it was no big deal because I still had a great machine. However, being the Scorpio that I am, I just couldn't let it go and kept thinking on it for awhile.
Cut to this morning, after some online perusing, ended up calling Apple customer relations and explained my situation. I was very upfront and honest, telling them I am aware of store policy and that the Apple store would not swap out the new machine but asked if maybe they could anyway. Well, the extremely nice customer service person after 10 minutes came back on the line and told me that since I bought it within 30 days I should be able to go back into the store and swap out for the new machine due to the recent processor bump. He gave me a case number just in case I had any problems in the store.
So here I go, armed with my case number and original receipt, to the Apple store. I ended up talking to the guy at the door, who turned out to be the store manager! I explained the *entire* situation to him, showed him my case number, and ultimately asked if I could swap my machine out for the new one...I was pretty straightforward. He said "meh...why not" and even waived the restocking fee. In my mind I was like "really? what!? thats it?" After sweating bullets at the counter, afraid they'd change their mind or something, I left with a brand new 15-inch Macbook Pro. I still can't believe it.
I realize I didn't need to devote an entire thread to this story, but I had to get all this excitement out somewhere! Further, it gives credence to Apple's excellent customer service. In my 5-6 years as a Apple customer, they have always given me A+ service. I would gladly drop another 2K for them because they treated me like I was the only person in that store today, and they didn't really have to. Thanks Apple!!

Honesty really is the best policy...I learned that 10-fold today!

Also to add, I wonder if anyone knows if the resolution on these 2.66 screens is different (maybe better) than the 2.53 screens? I speculate because after a few hours on this, I noticed that I don't have the eyestrain issues I had with the 2.53.

Gotta love customer satisfaction! The reason why you did get it was because you were polite and weren't demanding anything or complaining it was not fair. I find that if a customer calls in and is polite with me, I often give that customer complimentary things (restore discs, free support outside of warranty period, try my best to get hardware related issues fixed (sometimes for free) by speaking to my managers.) Make me enjoy my job, I'll make you enjoy your computer with no stress! :D

it used to be their policy that they would do that for thirty days before a product bump, since they don't tell you when they're going to do one.
I'm not sure if it's still their policy, but it seems like it should still be.

They agreed to swap out my 2.8 15" MBP for a 2.93 today!
I know that's fairly normal, but in this case it was a developer discount machine which specifically says no returns or exchanges. And it was a custom config (2.8Ghz) on top of that, which is also supposed to be no returns.
So I'm really happy with them making the exception. That extra 4% speed will make my work go so much faster. :)

That's why paying more for Apple's product, not only for the item quailty, but also for the great customer service :D
It happened the same on me too. I bought my Alu Macbook 13" at the beginning of this Feb. There are no Apple store in my area, so I have to purchase my order from the local reseller.
After the 8th day, the 13" macbook start acting up, it freeze up randomly, become really unstable, so I call up the local reseller, turned out they told me that it's outside of the 7 days return period(and they keep focus on arguing the return period, didn't bother trying to help my issue.), and point me to contact Apple care...... What the.....! I mean, It's a brand new macbook and I have to take it for service only used for a week?!
So anyway, I called Apple hotline, showed them whats the problem and told them the whole story, and they transfer my case to the customer relationship dept., The CR agent was very helpful. He call up the local reseller, ask them give me a replacement, but the reseller refused. So, then the CR agent let me do the exchange from them directly, also allow me to upgrade to Macbook Pro without any restocking fee, i still had to pay the difference in cost. But, it made me really happy and satisfied. :D
Apple was so nice to allow me to keep both Macbook and the Macbook Pro for a couple days to transfer my data. And have their people come my office to deliver and pickup the macbook & macbook pro in two different date.
I'm thrilled for the whole process, how they handle the case, so much care about their cumstomer. :D

Hi - yes there is a program called CPU-Z for Windows. If you have bootcamp/parallels/vmware you can install it and check the processor.
I am not sure if there is a similar program for OS X so if someone else wants to chime in.
Thanks for the assistance.

Great to hear that CSR helped you out. Some 3rd party resellers are like that which is why I refuse to deal with them. It's either online or at an ARS. An example where 3rd party really screws up was one time a customer purchased the white MacBook with AppleCare. The headphone jack was not working correctly so she called in and explained to me her problem. At the time, she was ineligible for support and I let her know that but she said she purchased AppleCare. I asked her what her AppleCare enrollment number was and she didn't know what I was talking about as she didn't get the AC box (reseller forgot to give it to her). She calls back the reseller with me on the phone and told the customer, "ENROLLMENT NUMBER IS NOT NEEDED TO ENROLL APPLECARE, MANY CUSTOMERS IN THE PAST HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND WERE ABLE TO ENROLL". I started to argue with the reseller for a few min. before hanging up. Ultimately, I was able to provide an exception with CSR reviewing the reseller and the situation.
At the end CSR is ALWAYS your best friend!:D

Apple are simply amazing, I have walked away from the store with a new 2.66 macbook pro after taking my macbook into the genius bar to get fixed. To explain I purchased a macbook back in early Jan, and the HDD failed, due to work I have been abroad till Tuesday when I arrived back in the country.
I booked a genius appointment to get the problem sorted. The genius enquired as to why I had waited so long to get the problem rectified. I explained that due to work, I had been abroad and was unable to do so. I had intended to bring the machine in, but had flown out on the evening with the machine and had simply used the machine via my external HDD having my main OS image on it.
So he offered me a replacement rather then a repair, saying that if I had been in the Uk that would have there course of action. I was speechless and simply said are you serious. To which the friendly genius said "yes".
I said actually I wanted to change it to a macbook pro will that be a problem, genius said nope and so I paid the difference and walked out with a 2.66.
I returned the other 2.66 that I brought yesterday and am now sat here in the morning setting up my machine. The wife is happy, as I was intending to sell my macbook once repaired and keep the 2.66. So now I have a 2.66 and have no made no loss on selling the macbook.
Apologies for the long version, I just wanted to say apple are great when you have a problem.

Oh, I know I won't notice any real difference. But it would bother the heck out of me that I missed a "free" update by 2 days.
Plus you never know, the new version may finally be good with more than 6GB ram. I'd be curious to find out.

No, you can do 6. I'm just wondering if the newest ones will do more than 6. In other words, 8.
Just seems odd that the new 2.66 and 2.93 iMacs can do 8GB (and they basically use the same processors, and same integrated video with shared RAM). And then I can't imagine Apple would bother having any real hardware or firmware differences between a current 2.93Ghz iMac, a current 2.93Ghz MBP 15, and a 2.93Ghz MBP 17.
I might order two 4GB modules and give it a shot. I can always use one in another machine if the experiment doesn't work.
(Unless someone has already tried this with the latest 2.66 or 2.93 MBP 15s)

You think there is that much difference between the 2? I was thinking of buying the Macbook Pro today with the 2.53 Processor in it? Seems like everything else is the same other then the Processor. Isn't the video the same?? Since I was going to throw in a new SSD I didn't think it would make that much of a difference in performance after.

I doubt you would notice any difference at all between a 2.53 and a 2.66. If you are getting some sort of discount on the 2.53, go for it.
In my case, the 2.93 is exactly the same price as I paid for the 2.8, so for no extra money I'm happy that Apple is doing the swap for me.

I bought my 2.53 about 3 weeks ago with an edu discount at my college. I might be able to get them to switch it out since it's still under the 30 days. BUT, I'm not sure it's worth the hassle just to get 0.13 speed increase. First off, I'd have to get them to agree to the replacement... then I'd probably have to pay the difference in price. Then, there is the remote possibility that I'd get a problem machine. My current MBP is perfect and I'm not sure I want to risk getting an inferior product that has a pixel out or some other anomaly that my current machine doesn't have. Seems I'd have to do a lot of work and assume a bit of risk just to get a machine that only runs 0.13 faster. Especially if it's not noticeable.
Does anyone know for sure if there are other differences besides the speed bump? If it was a better processor or was able to accept 8gb of ram... then it might be worth getting a swap.

Explain to them the situation, most of the time they will give u a case number just for calling, if not ask them if they can make a case and add the notes stating that you bought a 2.53 and want to upgrade to a 2.66.
When I called he simply told me that he would give me a case number without me asking, and told me to hand it to the manager at the apple store.

Anyone in Canada manage to swap a 2.53 with 2.66? I bought my 2.53 less than a month.. But not sure if 2.66 worth a hassle.. My current MBP is a second unit my first was swapped due to sound issue.

Swapped my 2.53 for a 2.66 today.
I took it in for screen flicker issues, and they no longer carry the 2.53. So, they gave me a knew one. :)

I got to the Genius Bar, turned it on, and there it was, the flicker had returned. The guy's reaction was pretty funny. "Uh, that's not supposed to do that."
Keep in mind that the flicker only occurs on the 9400M, and only when the brightness is low (1-3 bars).

How do you determine which screen model number is on a particular MBP?
I've already checked System Profiler in displays/graphics. Maybe I'm checking the wrong thing or the wrong section?

Similar story to the OP. I purchased a MBA on Jan 29th 2009. After using it and realizing I had probably fell victim to it's coolness heh and it wasn't the machine for me, I read thru this post in fact and decide to give Apple a call.
I simply told them when I purchased it, that I knew I was beyond the 14 day policy but wanted to check if I payed a restock could I exchange it for the new 17 UMBP. The manager came on the phone, and said sure thing!! I was honestly a bit shocked but wow, now that is making your customers happy.
Jan 29th to March 6th.. so 30+ days and ya I spent 250 in restock fee's but good luck selling a used machine for 2250 net. Ebay charges fee's of nearly 10% all said and done so for me this was well worth it.
Thanks to the OP and me catching this story I am very lucky to have a 17" MBP with zero hassles. Kudo's!!

This is all interesting and nice to hear. I bought a 15" MBP on Feb 15th. It has a few issues, nothing that couldn't be lived with, but bugged me. Spoke to the manager of the Apple store I got it from and she said they would swap it out, but business travel prevented that. So of course 4 days after my 14 day return period updated MBPs come out. Looks like now there's renewed hope. I'll call today and see if I can work something out. Very tempted to try for a 17" matte.
Somewhat unrelated side note, speaking of talking to the manager, a day or two after buying the MBP I got the usual email wanting to know about my Apple store experience. Figured what the heck, went to the site and sent off my thoughts. Less than an hour later the manager called. Shocked, I was.

I had same situation with my iMac.
it was 29 days after purchase and they swapped it without a word.
Wat? you can actually do exchange? My Macbook Pro is only 17 days old since delivery. Its only 6 days after the launch of the new configuration. No way I'm gonna do nothing about this. I'm gonna make the same request. :mad:Keeping my fingers and toes crossed. Wish me luck..

All thanks jovanboi who started this post. As a new Mac user, I never know this could be possible. After reading his post with positive replies from the rest of you. I gave it a try and call up Apple Customer Service to explain my situation. They kindly agreed to exchange my 2.8Ghz MBP to a new 2.96Ghz version with no extra charge :) It's just gonna take 2 weeks or so for delivery. But that well worth it. I'm another happy customer for Apple. :)
I'm so gald that Apple has made this possible. Thanks to all of you here and also to Apple. :apple:

Congrats! Was very happy as well with how easy it was. Just goes to show Apple is willing to bend the rules a bit to make customers happy.

Yeah, I'm hoping my replacement will be here next week. I wonder if they've shipped any 2.93GHz 15's yet?

my macbook pro 2.53 was purchased feb 6th (this one from best buy). I have lcd light leakage, it gets hot (seems many do), and the poor fan control. I called apple and they were willing to do nothing for me :(. I recently purchased a regular MB, macmini, time capsule, and iphone 16gb as well. They said i would have to send it in or get to a store who will send it in. All options I cant do as its my primary machine. I asked if they could hold my credit card and ship me a replacement while iw ait they said no. I asked if they could help me with maybe upgrading to the new model since it wasn't even 30 days and they bumped the speed, they said no. Even if i offered to paid a restocking fee. Oh well :( that was first time ever calling apple, thought i was over paying for customer service :P.
edit: i did send an email to sjobs@apple.com , I will see what the outcome is *shrug*

Hi, I'd like to affirm whether the current and latest MacBook Pro 15" at 2.66ghz a T9550 or P9600?
And is the higher end processor at 2.93ghz a T9800?
Can't seem to find anything except an Intel Core 2 Duo in the Apple website.

Has anyone had any luck with the upgrade to the new 2.66 model when they have purchased from a store other than Apple? I ordered mine from Amazon on 2/28, the refreshed happened on 3/3, and I received mine on 3/4.
I may just keep the one I have as it seems to be as close to perfect as it can be and the .13 speed bump won't really be noticeable. The downside is that I did pay for the current "top of the line" which was obsoleted before I even received it.

Hmmmm... this story has given me possible hope...
I got my 2.66ghz macbook pro in mid april... think it would be possible that they would let me send it back and pay the difference for a 2.93? Really doesn't matter much to me...
