I always find it amusing to see what some people will believe... ;)

it can be quite trying when sifting through story submissions on a website that links to "legitimate" news sources...

After, say, half a dozen, it gets boring and very tedious...

I always find April Fools' jokes on the web funny, although I'll admit that it's difficult to tell if some of the stories are real or fake.

When they're good, they can be a lot of fun. I don't like the way Macslash and Slashdot don't give any real news all day. It's not like the "serious" world stops on April 1.

The stuff just bores me and the AF concept is tired.

If everyone was legally obliged to walk dress up in full court jester costume and chirping "hey nonny-nonny!" every 10 minutes then that would at least be something, but online annecdotes of 'japes' are just naff.

April Fools 'Jokes' and 'Pranks', I find to be pretty boring. I think the whole idea of these kind of things.. and especially online jokes has been lost.

A proper April Fools based on an online News site would be to create a news story that sounded believable and slowly build to the insane while still retaining a sense of credibility.. then at the end blow everybody off.

iPodHacks Doom newsbyte is exactly what is wrong. The Headline is "Doom ported to iPod".. or whatever. Anybody who has been reading news and actually paying attention nows the best game any 3rd party has been able to do is a choose-your-own-adventure style game.. and nobody has been able to successfully add new games to the iPod. So you don't have to even read the article to know it's a fake if you have been paying attention.

The real way to try and pull off an iPod gaming based Prank would be to show a screen capture of something like a simple atari style top down racing game, and explain how a new company has started to develop games for the iPod. They found the backdoor into the menu and it's all downhill from there. Have a quote from somebody that 3D vector emulation should be easy enough with the way the hardware is set up, however battery life will be drained quite quickly. Based on signals generated by specific frequencies of noise you can download an AAC file, create a playlist with the name bin.extras.games and when you play that playlist it will automatically add the game to your menu. Have a warning about playing it in iTunes and how that will potentionally destroy the audio hardware of the computer. Include several warnings of how this is beta technology and no warrenty is implied and whatever. Of course when/if somebody actually downloads the file, it's just a Sound of somebody going "neener neener neener". That would be entertaining.

On the plus side, Apple-x did a good job with thiers. Actually creating a fake c|net report and using the old @ trick to show extra crap to hide the real URL.

although i wouldn't call them uptight, i would say they nee t lighten up a bit. if you think about it, all other "holidays" are usually pertaining to something with a meaning and there is a serious side to it, but april fools day was made by someone who wanted a day of laughter and happiness. :)

I figure I spend about 30 to 40 hours a year explaining to idiots -er- the somewhat overly-trusting... that what they read on the web on April 1st was supposed to be funny. Now, if it were only friends, or people I at least can tolerate, it wouldn't be such a bother.. but when the majority of them are co-workers or customers, who are now angry because they did, or attempted, or at least wanted to attempt, something they saw on the web (which they inevitably take as the gospel truth, no matter what it is.. scary amount of power websites have) it gets tiresome. I still occasionally hear people talk about old April Fool's postings as if they were legitimate. The most common one I hear referenced is Microsoft attempting to take over the Catholic church. (from the late 90's)

This was a lame April fools 'prank' but the best idea of what I want my next iPod to be... http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/333/C2687/

I pulled a good prank on my girlfriend's son today. Using a combination of OmniWeb 5, BB Edit, and Photoshop, I was able to make a modified version of the DOOM 3 web site, and have an image which said GOLD and linked to a press release which declared that DOOM 3 had, indeed gone gold, and was expected to be released in late April. The PR was actually pretty good sounding, too. Maybe I have found my new path in life...hmmm...nah, marketing isn't nearly as much fun as developing. Back to coding...

Anyway, it was probably the best April Fool's joke I ever made. :)

Did anyone see anything that remotely came close?

Well, it seems like we have april fools stories about apple during the whole year on some rumor sites....

I think SpyMac is the most elaborate ongoing April Fool's Joke ever!

It seems to be the haven for everyone that is a troll, a crook, or a crazy in the Mac Community.

I'd have to say the same about the Powerpage now - this site is a joke on a daily basis - stories that are at LEAST 4-5 days late - and rehashes from another site at that. The site posts unsubstantiated, untrue rumors just to get hits, the people that "edit" the site now make the most insanely stupid comments in their stories.

Both SpyMac and PowerPage pretend like their presence is massive and fake all sorts of statistics about the site to draw ad revenue.
