Awful quality pics - stupid Nokia (sorry!).
I just bought my second ATI, 800Mhz eMac... for £85 which includes 1Gb SDRAM & 10.3. So to summarise, for £170, I have TWO 2003 ATI eMac machines, side by side, running Leopard. I clocked the 7445 chip from 800Mhz to 1.33Ghz (*VERY* stable and safe to do by the way - http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eMac/eMac-upgrade.html)
Then, simply stripped down the machines, and install a 250Gb IDE drive & DVD-RW drive (EXACT type is: a Samsung "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S222A") in the first eMac, and a 160Gb IDE drive in the other one. These machines run many hours of each day, with NO problems running 10.5.6 whatsoever.
Cheaper than a comparable secondhand *cringes* PeeCee, and way more cool, capable, beautiful to use and own, and rugged. Got to LOVE Macs - I just can't bear to NOT use them. Thanks Apple for making such an incredible line of products, and thanks Microsoft for making such crap that pushed me away from you, and let me discover the superior Apple life. Also, I'd like to thank Linux for being SO incredibly inconsistent and fiddly to setup; I feel that in my Macintoshes, I have found THE perfect balance I need.
PeeCee vendors will always aspire to Apple; as Guy Kawasaki says in the film "Welcome to Macintosh" - the PeeCee vendors just don't know WHICH bit to steal! :D
Apple all the way - innovation, obsessive attention to detail with their craft, and the faultless way in which they remove unnecessary and cluttered items from their designs - who ELSE has "HIG" (Human Interface Guidelines) to ensure software is made to look beautiful?!.
Everyone copies Apple, either blatently or subversively. Psystar and others even try to cheapen the Mac - wanna know why? they don't 'get it' like a REAL loyal Mac user would. They deserve all they get from Apple's lawyers - Apple forever!! :D
[UPDATE] 13/02/2009
I no longer have the two eMacs from the above article. However, I purchased a 1.42Ghz eMac last week, and fitted a 160Gb WD drive to it. I am also about to upgrade the ram tonight, to 2Gb DDR, and also install a Samsung "SH-S222A" DVD±RW drive (these are fantastic drives!).
I must say that the 1.42Ghz (2005, USB 2.0) model does seem quite a bit snappier - liking it!.

I agree with you that eMacs are very capable machines. We used them in my last place of work and they generally blow the 2 *new* Celeron PC's out of the water. For most users, 1.33 Ghz G4 is all they actually need, not the muti ghz machines that PC World churn out. Plus, they have ATI graphics which seem more reliable then Nvidias recent, rather twitchy, offerings.
I wonder, as 800 to 1.33 is quite a jump, if Apple used reliable, downclocked 1.33's in the low end eMacs just so they could have 2 models.

I totally agree most computers are overkill for average users of email and web surfing, even the new iMacs. The new stripped-down PC netbooks address this, but a second hand G4 Powerbook or even iBook is still a better buy with larger screen and running full OSX 10.5.6.

Pretty sweet. There's actually an eMac (originally thought it was a white G3) at my work, on an empty cubicle (which is probably the only Mac in my office). I'm not sure if it works or not (probably doesn't), but I don't know how many times I was tempted to grab it. :D

yeah giving away. They had about 40 of them going a mix of 1GHZ and 1.25's and a couple of 1.42's. They upgraded the whole of the college to alu Imac's so they where going as surplus, with keyboards :D obviously they lasted about a day when it got round the college.

I must say, as pleased as punch as I am with them, they're a little sluggish on Leopard (I'm learning Xcode/Cocoa App dev) even with 1Gb ram and Dashboard & 3D Dock turned off. May have to get one of the new Mac minis :D

Yep! They are great little machines. I used my 1.25 Ghz with 2 gb of Ram running Leopard for 6 months until I got my Macbook Pro and it worked pretty well. It was a nice little machine for what it was, but sadly now with my Macbook Pro I don't use it that much. I still love it though.

Yeah, and they they're so aesthetically yummy (aren't most Apple things?!). Do you think I'd see £150 a pop each, if I sold them?. Not planning to do so, but I need more power for Xcode dev, and am getting a new Nvidia Mac mini, and these barely cut it (and I cant do i386 testing either).

I doubt you'll get that much since I bought mine last summer for ~$170 off of eBay and this was with 768 mb ram and Tiger. With Leopard and overclocked, you might get more, but the overclocking might turn some people off. It all depends what the current market prices are.

Used to love the ol' eMac :)
Back at college we had a suite full of G3 iMacs and one, glorious G4 eMac in the corner. Everyone used to rush for that beauty. For years I wanted one but now I'd probably rather buy a cheap Mac Mini for the purposes I'm after. Most I'd pay for one would be £50 realistically. Compared to what you can get now and the age of them.

I have no problem with your opinion, i do however have a problem with the way you express it and the fact that you seem to believe that Apple invents everything and the rest of the world copies them. Steve Jobs must love fanboys like you.
Also, a mac is a pc. Its one of my pet peeves that Jobs separates the two to make macs sound magical when a mac is still a pc.

Imo, eMacs are the best looking computer apple ever made. The hardware design matched the OS design perfectly, then Leo came along and they decided to make everything look like aluminum. I miss the days when both apple's hardware and os looked like candy.

That's great - carry on and have your problem, no skin off my nose. Actually, Apple invent rather a lot, and if they haven't invented it, they innovate something better from a direction people haven't considered. I'm not saying they invent EVERYTHING. You call me a fanboy; well if that is how YOU see me then feel free to attach whatever ridiculous label to me as you deem fit - there's plenty of stuff in Apple to be a fan OF - I'm happy to think I'm a fan of something good, extremely well designed and highly sought after. :D

Only if you're running Windows via Bootcamp. But a Mac running OSX is definitely not a PC - because it is not "PC-compatible". You can't just load PC software straight on a Mac running OSX as it just won't work.
PC is not Intel either. A PC is an IBM. As in IBM PC. Trademarked commercial product name. The term today refers to PC-clones running DOS/Windows (and now Linux), with "PC-compatible" being shortened to PC for convenience now there are no more true PCs from IBM. It generally just means the operating system Windows now.
As opposed to a Macintosh, Apple II/e/c/gs, Sinclair, Commodore Amiga, Atari, NeXT, BeBox and all other non-Windows/IBM PC-compatible computers ever made and sold. Most all of which bar the Mac having been relegated to history by the mid 90s by the Windows/PC clone-makers' behemoth. Well, maybe not the NeXT, which merged with Mac to become OSX. Which is a shame as some like the Amiga were vastly superior at the time, but they were just crushed by consumer demand for cheapness and mediocrity.
EDIT. PS. The clone makers weren't allowed to call them PCs either. If you look back at all the advertising from the 90s, they were all sold as "PC-compatible", not as PCs. I'm guessing IBM eventually just stopped bothering policing their trademark as they no longer use it themselves.

I cut off the rest because this is the only part that needs commenting on.
Yes, the term "PC" used to be IBM-specific, but at this point in time "pc" only exists as 'personal computer'. A colloquialism, yes, but the english language slowly adapts colloquialisms into grammatical rules which is why modern english can sound like anything from Shakespeare to Dr Phil and still be correct.
A PC is not a platform any more, just a collection of hardware. Apple may have had an argument in the ppc days, but today a mac is built from the same foxconn motherboard and intel cpu as most other computers.
Also, by your reckoning if i installed linux/bsd/*nix of any flavor on my computer it is no longer a pc because this so-called "pc compatible" software would no longer work on it. This isnt the early 90's any more, the paradigm has changed.

Oh, my bad. The arrangement is different. Same parts, different layout. Does that really justify a separation from the rest of the industry? You are kind of splitting hairs here. By this argument i could say that a dell laptop is not a pc because the mobo layout is different that any other manufacturers.

Nope, you didn't read my whole post. You can install whatever you want on your PC and it's still 'PC-compatible". It's ready and waiting, ie "compatible", for Windows installation at any time.
Ditto, install Linux on a Mac and it's still a Mac, ready and waiting for that OSX re-install to return to happy happy land at any time.

The eMac is awesome! It basically fixed everything that the original iMac needed. Gorgeous flat CRT, USB 2.0, G4 processor, and good discrete video cards. And today, an eMac can still do everything the average user needs (including smooth flash video playback) for around $100.

When our bedroom eMac was replaced by a 24" white iMac I found it really hard to sleep without the reassuring wind tunnel noise blasting away all night ;)
I nabbed another one (1.25GHz) from eBay for £40 which was allegedly faulty. I assumed it had the leaky capacitors but it has worked flawlessly ever since I turned it on, nearly 2 years ago. I opened it up for some reason a while back and, sure enough, it looks like someone's squeezed toothpaste all over the motherboard but it chugs on regardless.
My daughter pushed hers off her desk (temper, temper) and things looked very bad at first...purplish, off-centre screen. Rebooted and it was back to normal.
Maybe not quite as cute as the iMac G3s but enough computer for the large majority of home users and a very cheap and cheerful 1st Mac for anyone.

I hadn't used professional CRT displays at the time but this is why I loved the eMac too. Even managed to convince some people at college that it used an LCD/TFT/whatever display because the tell tale sign was its flatness, heh.
Reason why I like my last gen C2D iMac is because it looks like a modern eMac. :o

Sure, the mini is faster. But I also crippled it horribly in a RAM installation accident, and it's basically junk now. It hardly works at all.

Mar 19, 2009, 06:36 PM
The eMac was (and for many) still is a good machine and it's over-clock-ability is quite impressive (thanks to Apple's over-engineered heat-pipe). :)
However, I wouldn't touch the original chassis with a barge-pole (the NVidia Graphics models). They're a pain to work on and the analog/power boards are poorly built.
The only thing I don't like is the fact that some failures of the screen render the whole machine un-workable. In some cases, you can use an external monitor if that happens, or (if you're willing) you can pull the motherboard out and do this (http://www.lbodnar.dsl.pipex.com/eServer/) with it. :D
When they first came out, we joked how nobody would be stupid enough to steal one because they were so heavy. That was until a developer client called in with sad news that somebody had stolen his eMac and XServe.
With respect to comparing one with a MacMini, it depends on which models you're comparing. If somebody offered me a 1.42Ghz eMac or a 1.42Ghz MacMini, I'd pick the eMac for the simple reason that it doesn't use a 2.5" drive and choices of replacement optical drives are better (and cheaper).
That's my 2c. :)

I doubt that *VERY* much indeed, and also considering you'd have no way of proving this, due to the fact that Intel versions of Tiger & Leopard require SSE2 *minimum*. As regards the dumb people you say you see in your sig?... think about it a bit...

I'm in on this thread about eMacs - another devotee.
Yes, eMacs were never made for portability, I darned near dropped mine when removing it from its packaging. The awkwardness of handling was largely, I suspect, because they were intended for the education market. The 1 GHz model was issued exclusively for schools but of course they found their way into wider public use.
Such is the popularity of the eMac that there is a sub-cult of people who've refused to give up on them because of the notorious capacitor problem. They've instead researched effective capacitor replacement, much cheaper than replacing the logic board.
People who own the 1.42 GHz model are the lucky ones, no capacitor problem.

You can use the iPod, just rather slower than if it were USB 2.0.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I never got a real answer on this::o
I have tried to run the 2 i pods on the slower USB ports, and it simply freezes the Emac up. I called Apple and they say it is the slow usb, and not anything I can do (besides upgrade??) Suggestions???

I don't know, I always thought the iMac G3 with the Harmon Kardon speakers sounded the best from the "modern" era. The Performa 6400 with built in subwoofer sounds great too!
My iMac G3 has pretty terrible speakers. Maybe you mean the slot loaders?

mod edit for space.
That all sounds rather creepy and wierd to me !

No you don't. They're big, heavy lumps of junk.
Unfortunately we still have some where I work, from the 700MHz to 1.42GHz variety.
They just take up so much space; not a 'classic' design either...

Uhmmm... no they're rather good!. I would recommend that if you want a modern Mac you wouldn't buy one of these as an "everyday" Mac... but for their vintage, they're incredible, and FAR from "junk" :). You could be FAR more unfortunate, and have to use a Dell with Vista :P

There's a guy around me selling a 1ghz eMac for $75. 512mb ram/40 GB HDD.
I'm using my dumpster saved iMac G3 right now, and I didn't know if it would be worth it to upgrade to the eMac. Bigger screen size, almost twice the processor speed, G3 -->G4, higher Geekbench score.
Although, I'm not sure if it would be worth it. I found a guy on craigslist selling two 512mb RAM sticks for $40, which would max my iMac out. Or, I could buy the eMac, and eventually max the ram out. Is that a wise investment?
I just worry that I wouldn't see any increase in speed during my day to day tasks of web browsing, iTunes, and MS Office. A 1 ghz G4 eMac can't even do youtube or streaming video, right? Neither can my iMac.
Should I just max out the ram on my iMac and go on my merry way? Or upgrade?

It could run web video, because it has 32 megabytes of VRAM. If it is a 2004 model. it could have video issues. Look at LowEndMac for more info on this. Plus, the AltiVec engine should help when using flash-intensive sites (like youtube). Plus, the 1 ghz G4 may allow you to use iPhoto and iMovie with the extra horsepower and VRAM. Take my word on this, we use these at school and they are great little machines. I would have gooten one and put my money where my mouth is, but my parents splurged and goy me an iMac G5 with some of my own $$$$$$ too.:D:D

My Power Macintosh G3 with 2 MB VRAM played YouTube. Strangely my PowerBook G4 can't though. It just crashes Safari.
My eMac is rounder. :p
My PowerBook has better graphics, FW 800, Dual Link DVI, actual expansion (cardbus)(besides USB/FW400), backlit KB, Gigabit Ethernet, IS A LAPTOP!, and a LCD instead of a CRT.

We've got a 1GHz eMac with 768Mb and the Radeon 7500 card. It will play Youtube okay, but its best if you let the video load completely before playing. I'd really shoot for a 1.25 or 1.42GHz model though, having the extra processor + faster bus speeds and USB 2.0 ports would be worth it.

I just picked up an eMac 1ghz/512mb/80gb/Superdrive for $75! I'm actually not positive of the video card or USB version, but I think it's the ATI/USB1.1 model. I just found out I can't boot OS9 from it, which I'm a little bummed about but I'll probably use it as a general dorm machine. The only computer I usually bring to school is my 11" Vaio TZ, so having the eMac will be great for reading PDFs, Matlab, Grapher, Pages, etc.
Can the eMac use regular double sided SDRAM? I have two sticks of 512mb PC133 that I bought on eBay for my iMac G3, but it turned out they didn't work for it. They've been sitting around ever since, I was wondering if I could put them in the eMac.

If its the Pre-USB2.0 model, then yes it should use that RAM just fine I would think. If you've already got the RAM, I don't see any problem in at least giving it a try. I've been considering getting another 512Mb stick to bump our 1GHz eMac up to the 1Gb maximum because it just feels too sluggish with 768Mb.

Well, the high density RAM didn't work, but I stole a stick off of my G3 iMac to bring the eMac up to 1gb. This thing is LOUD though! I'm so used to my iMac and my little Vaio that fan noise is pretty jarring for me.
I'll put it up on Craigslist and see if anyone takes it for a small profit. If not, I might keep it around. It's amazingly fast for such an old PPC computer, even YouTube plays smoothly. I'm kind of shocked that the Genie effect is actually smoother than my old Macbook Air... discrete graphics FTW!

I bought an emac for peanuts at a garage sale, and all I can say is.. STAY AWAY FROM THEM! it's been nothing but frustration.
The original idea was to buy that machine for my sister so she can check her mail and stop asking me to let her use one of my pcs. It came with Safari 1.03 (85.98.1) and Internet explorer mac 5.2 Neither of wich load hotmail correctly wich was the whole point of this machine!!!
Once Hotmail loads, In safari the text is garbled up, letters on top of each other on the hotmail interface, even with max resolution and text to the minimal size things are on top of each other and the navigation buttons on the page don't work, I can't go to my "sent" folder for example.
I tried using Iexplorer. it doesn't even get that far, it stays stuck at a screen telling me I can use my windows live ID for my xbox, hotmail, etc..
I tried clearing cache and cookies, entering from msn instead of hotmail.. same results.
I have looked for updates on the software, The operating system itself is MacOSX 10.2.8 There are no new downloadable updates available for it or its browsers anymore. A friend came by with his copy of Leopard to see if it could be installed. It gave us some error, I can't remember what it was exactly but it wasn't very specific, more like "instalation error, aborting"
So I ran out of ideas and came here to vent some frustration.
I like the look of the machine, I hate the mouse (wth? only one button?) but I feel the whole platform has been abandoned and getting software for it is very frustrating given the fact that this OS is really incompatible with any software that comes out now.
Sorry if this has been solved elsewhere and I didn't find the post. please redirect me to it.

^^ Download firefox 2. It will work fine http://download.oldapps.com/Firefox/Apple/Firefox%202.0.0.20.dmg
It is nothing to do with the computer. it is just old software and/maybe not enough RAM (might be why leopard would not work)
Safari 1 and IExploder 5? Nobody should be using that today. Just get firefox 2. (I know it is an old version but it is the newest that will work on 10.2)
If you can get 10.4 tiger on there it will run the newest web browsers available.

PPC must use firewire to boot, and 10.4 was the last version with a cd alternative.

I got a Spare 700 Mhz eMac from my school for free. It has a dimming CRT. But I fixed that by taking it apart and removing the Video cable and putting it back in. Beautiful Machine, it was the model with the Combo drive. I stuck a DVD-RW Drive, (I'll probably remove that when I get my iMac G4) and it is running Tiger and OS 9. It rocks. I also put an airport card in it.

Wow, I might get one after I get my 3GS and external HD. Or, depending on the size of the HD in the eMac, I might just use it, along with my 3 PCs, as a external HD!
Though, I have 6 computers ATM, three right behind me, one with two HDs, so I wonder if I actually need a external HD...
Might be a good solution to get the eMac actually since I'm having no luck with OSx86 on any of my machines.

I think the eMac was a really good idea. It was because of the eMac that several school districts around Central Texas didn't switch to PCs (not sure if they are still running Macs though). I recall setting up over 100 of these machines in Summer of 2003 for several different school districts when I was interning at an education co-op.

Complaining about the one button mouse? What are you, new here? ;)
Seems like the whole issue is that you are trying to use a really outdated operating system. Upgrade to 10.3 and your experience will be markedly better. 10.4 will be even better, and you'll get compatibility with almost all modern software.

Yes, I'm new here =P
So I finnaly got OSX 10.4 disc, but It wouldn't install.. so after checking how much ram I had it was 124mb ha!!
So I spent hard earned cash into a 512 memory module.
10.4 loaded up, and after a few hours of patching and getting things up to date, the OS is running fine, and so is the latest version of Safari. Hotmail works fine. I installed openoffice (aqua) so my sister can open the junk files she gets in power point and word and all that crap. :D
Power point presentations work, but very very slowly the cheesy wipe effects seem to really bog the machine down for some reason.
Also youtube videos load, and sound fine.. but the video freezes. Thinking I might need a newer driver for the video card went hunting for one.. but without any luck (gforce2 mx)
Maybe this particular processor is just too slow to play youtube videos. Can anybody confirm?

I'm pretty sure you never need video driver's for a Mac. Since there are so few video cards that work on them, they're included in the OS X install disk by default.
Maybe this particular processor is just too slow to play youtube videos. Can anybody confirm?
Maybe. I have the top of the line 1.42 GHz eMac with the stock 512 MB of RAM, and it plays YouTube fairly well (A little video skipping once in a while, but nothing serious.) But unless you have that model, I couldn't say anything else.

My first Mac was the late 2003 model eMac. I got it in 2004, and I used it for video editing. It always ran Final Cut Studio (except for Motion) flawlessly. It was always a faithful friend and a great backup computer when my MacBook needed to get fixed. I used it a bit this summer. It was a little slower than I remember, but it still ran multiple applications and didn't have any problems. That's more than I can say about any other computer I've ever owned. A kid that I know needs a computer, and I am going to try to give the eMac to him. I'll miss it, even though at this point in time the render times on HD video are awful.

Hello i bought 2 weeks ago my first emac and actually my first mac ;)
i used since windows 95 came out windows based computers ,last ones had been
a dell with 3.0 ghz pentium 4 running vista for a while but vista slowed down the whole thing ,
then i got rid of vista and run xp on it ,
a big improvement ,
but since i found out that linux would run on it as full support from dell for red hat
i had to try linux , wich made the whole thing a rocket ,,
but then then 2 weeks ago the impossible happened
i surfed around in ebay and tumbled over a ,
emac g4 ,1.42ghz ,1gb ram ,64mb vram ,superdrive, build late 2005
,so it was one of the last ones ,have seen it and knew ... i got to have it ,
no matter what the bidding goes for set my highest bid to £500
to make sure i dont get outbid , got it for £142
i picked it up from london and it was even prettier in nature then on the photo in ebay
its running mac osx 10.4.11 tiger and i love it,
it is amazing how easy it does everything you ask it to do and the picture quality is amazing ,
i keep on asking myself why i ever bought a tft /lcd screen ,
the crt is far superior, is crystal clear and true colors
its a amazing cracking little machine
i now part with my dells for good , no more intel and windows for me
emac & osx forever :D

Hi :D
I'm thinking about buying a nice eMac to fill some empty desk space, then perhaps another one to accompany it (though I am also very interested in one of the old G4 iMacs with that amazing "bug" design).
Anyhoo, I'll probably mostly use it for mucking about, but I'm also thinking it'd be nice to have a backup, so I'd like one with USB 2.0 (so I can sync the 3GS).
As for specs, I don't mind if I just get a low end one at all, it won't be my prinary machine as I said.
Anyone got any tips for me? Or things to look for when buying one?
Thanks in advance! :)

there is not much to look out for apart from scratches or school markings , they are on the top where you cant see them if you sit in front of the emac
as i metioned it on the previous post there was a batch of 1.25mhz models with bad capacitors , but how to find out which ones are affected and which not i have no idea
if you absolutely need usb 2.0 then you only have the choice between
Apple eMac G4/1.25 (USB 2.0) (M9425LL/A*)
*Please note that there also is a 1.0 GHz variant of this model that was released exclusively to education.
Apple eMac G4/1.42 (2005) (M9834LL/A*)
The eMac "2005" models use the same architecture as the USB 2.0 models, but have a faster processor, superior graphics, and enhanced optical drives. The high-end configuration also provided additional RAM and a larger hard drive.
for mor details of the spec see

there is not much to look out for apart from scratches or school markings , they are on the top where you cant see them if you sit in front of the emac
as i metioned it on the previous post there was a batch of 1.25mhz models with bad capacitors , but how to find out which ones are affected and which not i have no idea
if you absolutely need usb 2.0 then you only have the choice between
Apple eMac G4/1.25 (USB 2.0) (M9425LL/A*)
*Please note that there also is a 1.0 GHz variant of this model that was released exclusively to education.

Thanks for that! :)
After some research, I found that the 3GS dosen't actually need USB 2.0, so that's no longer important.
Here's something else too: how would I go about getting one I know can run OS 9 as well as OS X? I'd love to have a play with OS 9 and own a machine that can run it :)
I don't think I'll spend £150 on a eMac though, that's what I'd spend on a G4 iMac (even if just for the design, they're worth owning).
I'm looking to spend around £30-£60 on one (including P&P, coz that's very expensive on big-ass computers with CRT screens on the front :D).

answer from everymac .com is quiet simple
The original eMac models and the original "Combo Drive" configuration of the eMac G4/1.0 (ATI) (M8950LL/A) are capable of booting in MacOS 9. Subsequent models are only capable of booting a version of MacOS X and running MacOS 9 applications in the "Classic" Environment provided by MacOS X 10.4.11 "Tiger" and lower ("Classic" is not supported starting with MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard").
for your valuation you could get a 700mhz and eventually a 800mhz in your price range if you dont care about condition eventually even a 1ghz model
still the emac has the status of a design icon ;)
i actually prefer the design of the emac , the only imac`s i really fancy are the original imac`s the g3 models :)
i dont like flat screens

of course i wish you all the best to get a emac
and to make it easier to decide what you want
http://www.macintouch.com/perfpack/comparison.html
but all the Apple hype about the G5 falls a little short when you see the low-cost eMac, with its slower G4 processor, pushing the iMac G5 in performance. The eMac is actually faster in several real-world situations, and it looks like low-level hardware design is responsible for eMac advantages in disk performance.:D

We're talking Apple though.
In all of their consumer machines that I can think of (iMac G3, G4, G5, Intel, eMac, Mac Mini) only the first two generations of the iMac G5 made it easy to swap the hard disk. o.o

I have to agree with you.Apple is amazing, who put the laser in the Mouse first?Apple,CD Rom?Apple,All in one?Apple. And the hardware is mazing,my main computer is a PowerMac G4 867Mhz.G4,with 1GB Performance Ram,ya my MAIN Computer is a 7 year old Mac I love to Death! If this thing died,I'd die.Not to mention I have OSX Leopard on it.:D :apple::apple::apple::apple:

I just got ahold of an emac M9150LL/A g4/800MH WITH Panther and I have some really basic questions.
First, do I need a special Mac keyboard with this? My local computer shops (tiny town here) what is the advantage/disadvantage?
I see from your excellent pictures and upgrades, that it might be possible to go from Panther to Leopard....but without any hardware skills....would I be able to upgrade to at least Tiger without any modification?
Is changing the CD to a DVD drive very hard to do - limited skills here?
I am so thrilled to be able to play with a Mac (I design websites), that you just don't know....and wondered what upgrade is necessary to view the internet properly with this machine....for instance, will the upgrades from Panther be necessary to display web pages as they display on Snow Leopard, or the other versions?
Thanks for any information, I am running out to buy a power cord, a keyboard and mouse today....(which reminds me of another question....will this version emac be capable of using a wireless keyboard and mouse without tweaking the hardware?)....so glad to find some folks that are using this machine still!

Nope, any USB keyboard will work just fine.

Only thing that would hold you back would be the RAM. If you have 128 MB, Panther would be best for that machine. 256 MB and above, Tiger should work great. I don't know if this is true for all eMacs, but I know it's very easy to upgrade the RAM in the later models - this may not be true for yours, though.
Is changing the CD to a DVD drive very hard to do - limited skills here?
From what I've seen, it's not very hard. But I've never tried to do it, so in all honestly I haven't a clue.
I am so thrilled to be able to play with a Mac (I design websites), that you just don't know....and wondered what upgrade is necessary to view the internet properly with this machine....for instance, will the upgrades from Panther be necessary to display web pages as they display on Snow Leopard, or the other versions?
I've found that Opera is a great browser for Panther, and for the most part it displays everything well. (A few hiccups here and there.) An older version of Firefox or Safari could work too, if that's what you prefer, but I little experience with either of them on Panther so I couldn't tell you how they run and display pages.
Thanks for any information, I am running out to buy a power cord, a keyboard and mouse today....(which reminds me of another question....will this version emac be capable of using a wireless keyboard and mouse without tweaking the hardware?)....so glad to find some folks that are using this machine still!
Unfortunately, no. I don't believe the early models had Bluetooth, even as an upgrade option, so you may have to stick to wired. (Unless you want to get a set that has it's own little wireless hub that connects by USB.)
They are still fantastic machines. Built like a tank, solid as a rock and fairly cheap for the specs they offer. I use one as my main daily machine, and I'm very pleased with it. :)

Changing the optical drive in my later eMac was really pretty easy but please be aware that there are potentially lethal voltages retained by the CRT even sometime after unplugging so leave it unhooked for a day or two and keep away from the business end during the operation. You may find you'll need to reinstall the OS as it would have detected the lack of DVD when first installed and thus not installed the relevant DVD framework and DVD Player.
Maxing out the RAM is the best thing you could do but as it's such an old variety it's relatively expensive.
Any USB keyboard will do but you'll get " when you want @.
It's going to struggle with Flash so I'd advise to you to use ClickToFlash (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10968219) or its equivalent on whichever browser you plump for.
Great machines.

as far as i know, these machines could never stand up to a school. heck not that many macs could. there is a little iMac g3 (the green sage models) unplugged in the back corner of our mac lab that i always sit by that is cracked so badly that the machine could crack in half if you grabbed it by the handle. I always hum the song "it's not easy being green" when I see it.

eMacs are build to withstand bad treatment over years in schools
and they do it without complaining ,
you have to love them for their durability they seem to be indestructible
G4/G5 iMacs would be long gone with this school treatment ,
but not so the eMac
they are just getting the odd scratch or he may lose a speaker grill ,
but does that stop them from working ...no :)
some may mention the fan noise , but its very effective when it comes to cooling
mine is running 24/7 and it still maintains the same temperature every day

Youtube doesnt work with safari, it just crashes the application when loading the page. Il be sure to give Camino a shot and downgrade flash player. (UPDATE: Tried Camino, and it worked, but very choppy. This will still be helpful incase i ever need to use my iMac g3 as a secondary computer again =] )
also for some reason the keyboard that came with it isnt working properly on panther, all special charecters are messed up, for example, right bracket is ç and left is ^. The quotation marks are È.
Anyone know the answer to this, it worked fine in tiger and on my Mac Mini.

just to make it clear its the 1ghz last models with usb 2.0 , 1.25 ghz models and early imac g5`s who had the bad capacitor problem
Thousands of eMacs & iMacs manufactured during 2004 had the bad Nichicon Capacitors. Apple has issued a repair Extension warranty back in i think 2006/2007 , some owners took that offer and got the logic boards replaced without fuss

the eMacs (around 2002 ) suffered also from a screen problem ,
called the "raster shift" problem causes the bottom third or half of the screen to go black, with the rest of image shifting upward and out of the top boundary of the display. Serious static also accompanies the problem, rendering the viewable part of the screen virtually useless, but not alleMacs of that time had been effected , it was caused by the PAV board
which apple offered to replace , but again it was down to the customer to get the emac into a apple repair centre

I believe that was due to wires in the CRT melting and touching eachother shifting the screen, though this is rare to me, ive never seen this happen in real life. only on youtube.

I just stumbled upon this thread, I never realized how much love there is out there for the old eMac! :) I've got a 1.25 ghz model with 512 mb of ram, running Panther still and had just about given up on it, as I'm having trouble in a lot of areas (can't download the newest versions of iTunes, Firefox or Flash, because of Panther) but I'm now about to switch from Panther to Leopard so that should get rid of the compatibility issues I'm having. I bought my eMac in early 2005 and it's been a very reliable machine for me. I'll never get rid of it, my plan is to buy a Mac mini in the next year or two, but I'll still keep the eMac hooked up in another room just because I couldn't bear to part with this trustworthy member of my family :apple:

Has anyone ever had the problem of Firewire shutting down their iBooks? Or anything else that was connected via Firewire?
On my first eMac, I was trying to go into Target Disk mode and install something on DVD (eMac didnt have DVD player) and when I connected the wire, I heard a pop, and my iBook turned off, but my eMac stayed on. I turned off the eMac and I took the battery and what not from my iBook. I let them both sit for a long time. The eMac wouldn't turn back on at all. It had a broken power supply. And the iBook came on perfectly! Weird....
So... about 2 months later, I get my new eMac, and its much newer. The old one was a 800Mhz, running Tiger. Now I have the 1.42Ghz running Leopard. So, my iBook wasn't getting a good signal on the internet, so I decided to just share the eMacs internet with Firewire. The second I plugged in the cable into my iBook, it turned off and I smelt that weird electronics burning smell. I did the same thing as before, and let it sit.
The eMac was perfectly fine and the power supply didnt break. And the iBook was fine too. oIts all great, but I want to know why I can't ever connect anything with Firewire between the two computers.
The iBook is G3 700Mhz, 768Mb RAM, Running Tiger
The eMacs were:
OLD- G4 800Mhz, 512Mb RAM, Running Tiger
NOW- G4 1.42Ghz, 1.5Gb RAM, Running Leopard
So what could it be?

Wow that's weird. I use FireWire all the time. Possibly something actually wrong with the FireWire port on the iBook? Did you use the same cable? Maybe it's the cable.

Yeah, same exact cable. It was from an External Hard Drive I had. I never used the cable with the Hard Drive because it was connected to my PC.
It was never used, except for with the eMac and the iBook together.

Is it getting an IP address? Can you ping the loopback adapter? Does that port on your router or switch work with other computers?

Does it see other computers on your network? if not then the ethernet port may of been zapped in a storm and fried.

easy things first
go into system preferences networking and look if the ethernet is showing up
at all , some people disable it when using airport or modem or if they used a
wireless usb thingy
or maybe it was configured for a router or dns server manually so it still just want to connect to that certain router or server
just for exampe if someone has maually choosen his router to conect to manually and this router had ip adress 192.168.1.1 and its still unchanged and your router has ip 192.168.0.1 it sinply cant connect as on this ip is no router in your house
or some people did connect direct to the provider using ppoe just diable it again
there are lots of reasons why you could not go online just because someone has disabled certain things or enabled others

Ok,I opened network on my powermac and on my emac and plugged the ethernet into the emac,I was using internet in the powermac by airport,so,the emacs ip was different,so I selected DHCP manual address and typed it in the way my powermac said the ip was and it didn't connect, what did i do wrong?I hit apply and it seemed to take it.

it's not fried,it works in the room with the router and with a different ethernet cable.not just with the one in my room.

Using my name in vain?... haha!.
I just bought a mini VGA-to-VGA from eBay for £7 (including shipping!) and it works perfectly on my LG W2243S 1920x1080 panel, after enabling spanning with Screen Spanning Doctor. Also my iBook G4 12" 1.33Ghz works perfectly at this res - WIN!!. :D

so i got now 16 inch visible on the eMac +17 inch available screenspace , makes a total of 33inch screenspace , and i actually prefer the 2 screen solution as i can place them in the right angle to each other

I had an eMac (my first OS X Mac) back in 2004 when it was new. Though it was a nice, very fast and aesthetically pleasing machine it also was one of the most problematic Macs I've ever owned. Had to send the machine in to Apple 6 times for repairs, eventually getting a brand new one in the process (I bought it refurb). Eventually ended up selling it to replace it with an Intel iMac since the machine was getting a little too dated.
Some notable flaws I'm not too fond with about the eMac:
* Yellowing of the speakers and fan. It seems regardless of how clean my work environment is the yellowing of the speakers and fan is inevitable. Not only does it yellows but it also becomes a dust magnet for virtually everything floating in the air. It's also impossible to clean off especially on the later models where you can't even take off the speaker grills. BTW the eMac always sits in my room which I clean daily and I never smoke nor does anyone else in the house.
* Tilt and swivel stand has to be purchased separately for $50. It should become preinstalled on every eMac shipped. Without it the eMac looks fugly and sits too low on the table.
* 1280 x 960 resolution flickers too much, impossible for me to use so I have to resort to 1152 x 864.
* Vibrating screen when speakers are too loud or hard drive does work.
* Polycarbonate plastic. I just hate this material. Though it provides a nice glossy, reflective shine on the case it is much too prone to scratches. I'm glad Apple switched mostly to aluminum and glass.
* Translucent edge around the display. There is a gap where the plastic isn't sealed where dust and other particles can enter. Whenever this happens it takes too much effort to get them out.
* Extremely heavy, slippery and has no grip handle. My dad actually dropped it when he attempted to carry it.
* Loud.
One thing I mentioned is that it does look really nice, although not as nice as the iMac G4. This a few of the photos I took of it when I had it, you'll notice that it's one of Apple's shiniest computers.

and there is no gap between the case and the screen on mine

I think he's referring to the iMac G3 style handle that was integrated into the top air vent.

The later eMac did not have removable speaker grilles... so I am a little confused as to which model you own.

a eMac (usb2.0) 1.42 ghz 512mb ram 160gb superdrive model from according the sticker inside the flap 2006 so one of the last shipped by apple
but upgraded to 2 gb ram
and the speakers are easy to remove with a small philips screwdriver just poke in one of the holes (i got a screwdriver that thin ,but careful do not poke to far in ) and then pull a bit ,then pop grills removed without any damage

Hey to all,
I can now proudly say Im a member of the eMac owning collective. Love it already and Ive only had it a week. Mines a 2002 Model though (700Mhz, 128MB RAM  (Would be a lot more, but the screw is pretty-much stripped and wont come out), 40GB HD and a Combo Drive). Its currently being used as a Jukebox and for Video Content Storage. If only 10.4 would run on 128MB RAM xD.

yes some people think such a screw has to be tight so it can hold that 5 ton weight of the little door and overturn it , there is a little option , take the thinnest flathead screwdriver you can find and carefully push it under the screw and lift it up a bit and try to turn the screw with a philips screwdriver slowly very slowly until you feel the screw has grip again and keep on lifting with the flathead and turning with the phillips , it might take long but eventually the screw might come out again , hope i explained it so you can understand what i mean
if that does not work get some pliers hold the screw and drill the head of (carefully as the screw might fall in without head)
