iPod touch I Pod Touch Failing to Appear on Desktop

My daughter's boyfriend gave her his I pod touch. He did not have the software that was used on his Windows computer. When connecting the I pod touch to my Mac desktop the icon will not come up on the computer. No songs can be dowloaded. I have 10.4.11 the latest sofware and the latest I tunes software on my computer. How do I get the I touch to dowload songs?

Also how can I wipe the I touch clean of its other information.
