Hey i got my first mac in january. still in love with it. changed from a amd 2500XP with 512 to my ibook 800mhz. Great machine i love it works fine for me. I upgraded the ram which i had a problem with. Crucial had some dodgy sticks that kept making my mac crash! i kinda lost hope i thought dam and realised what it was. Now my mac has been on for...

and its loving it all no slow downs or memory problems.

i play max payne, civ 3, sim city 4 (slow) the sims making magic.

I use safari, mail, i tunes, i life which i got for £15 :> garage band runs fine but im not a massive user. MSN and ICQ and i dont really get slow downs only if i use safari on easynews with loads of posts then it kinda loads for a bit.

But what im saying is what a fantastic OS it only crashed when there was a problem which is fair enough. Everything works well together. None of this like on Xp where you gotta have...

so on but what i mean is it is true about the pricing of macs.. at first there more expensive but when you look at all the software its all on there no pirated stuff so on with a PC its like this... i bet 90% of people that build themselfs ;)

but the software would cost loads if you done it properly to get the same experience as the mac!

i paid £850 for this little ibook and its fine for me. Im thinking of geting a Imac because i never take this laptop anywhere and i could do with a bit more space... Also i use my 21" old Pc monitor to do stuff on so thats cool :>

My Cube has been up for 16 days 14 hours. I have to restart now because of Software Update. That's about the only reason I ever have to restart.

My MDD PowerMac has been up 4-5 days and my iBook has been up at least a week. Even the old G3 at work, which gets pawed at all day by careless kids, averages 2-3 weeks before somebody accidently turns it off.

longest uptime I ever had was on jaguar. just under 7 weeks. I did 5 weeks on 8.6 once! I think thats a record for a classic os. :)

i think the longest ive had my PB up was 6 weeks under Jaguar the beginning of this last semester. I only had to restart (i think) to install panther. :D

5 days.... it's normally longer, but I just installed software that required a restart.


I tend to restart every few weeks (because I optimize it every few weeks.....)

wow. my record was 60 days, last year, from late september to all of october to early november... on my old G3 iBook 700MHz cd-rom.

within that 60 days I created a DVD with a total run time of about 1.5 hours, wrote some school assignments and of course reading the usual websites and email checking.

right now i'm only at 2days, 7hrs 39min. i've been having heaps of slowdown, and installed a new theme, etc. then i've got to do that new security update sometime... :rolleyes:

even though i use PhotoShop, Flash, Dreamweaver etc, if i close those apps, it shoudl free up the RAM, right? allowing me to get longer uptimes?

so funny... every time i hear about uptime, i recall the story about windows NT having problems with keeping track of uptime. but no one noticed that problem for a long time because none of the NT box would stay up long enough for the problem to occur. or something like that. :p

I might be misunderstanding you - but uptime is just the amount of time since the machine was last booted. Running apps shouldn't affect this at all, unless you mean you're rebooting on occasion to clear up observed problems that might be due to memory leaks (or some other issue that rebooting will fix).

One of my sysadmin coworkers is such an uptime geek that he will sometimes spend hours tracking down the culprit for a problem on his Linux box, when a reboot would resolve the issue in a couple minutes. :confused: And by "tracking down" I don't mean he's finding and fixing a bad config; no, he's just hunting for the particular service causing the issue so he can restart it rather than reboot the box!

Sad I know, but my machine had to go on a journey which involved disconnection from the power. My loads are quite heavy as the processor is almost always running at 100% (RC5-72 Decryption).
