So after reading that the ETA on the new ATi 4870 from mac will be mid April, I went looking around at the other mac vendors.

MacMall has the new 4870 listed at $349 and out of stock (of course). They also have an XFX 4870 (much cheaper) and in stock. Of course no description:
http://www.macmall.com/macmall/shop/detail.asp?Redir=1&description=XFX+Graphics-XFX+RADEON+HD+4870+1GB+DD-775M+DUAL+DVI-Video+Cards&dpno=7736250

This is the same part from Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150339

Anyone tried this? The MacMall listing says both "PC/Mac" so I'm curious. A 4870 is a 4870 right? The XFX also has 1GB RAM compared to the 512mb from Apple's.

Or can I assume it will work under Boot Camp only. Any info would be great! I'd rather wait for a real-deal apple approved so OSX can take advantage of the major increase as well.

Current Machine: 2.8x8 Mac Pro

That XFX 4870 definitely wont work in a mac, at least not without a firmware flash. It looks like macmall.com lists every gfx card in the "PC & Mac" category... it's just a general computer category.

Most likely it is the PC version which works only under Boot Camp.
