New Shuffle... maybe an iTunes Update to follow?

Just watched the new iPod Shuffle video and see the Party Shuffle has changed to iTunes DJ. Maybe an update on its way.

So what's the word on using non-apple headphones with this thing? It looks like the controls on the cable and not on the shuffle... it's probably nitpicking and I don't mind the apple phones (certainly not for using at the gym, running, etc) but I'm sure it'll bother some if others can't be used.

I'm glad that I cancelled my Mac Pro. Now I can get a new iPod Shuffle and only use Apple's headphones!

We had a brief time where it looked like Apple would become less proprietary.

Fortunately (I guess?) they'll probably release an accessory to allow you to use third party headphones. Definitely annoying if you're into third party headphones (which is probably a good number of people). If only sony released accessories to let SD cards work with their proprietary stuff...

Yeah, sort of like the one that came with my 3G iPod. It had all the buttons on it to control the iPod, with just a headphone jack on the other side.

The shuffle headphones are the headphone http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB770
with remote and microphone. Those use 4 pin connectors.

FYI 4 pin connectors are not "proprietary". The connector has been on the market for years now.
Yes there are companies that make accessories for 4 pin connectors. Just look in the iPod touch section.

It's like saying mp4 (AAC) is proprietary, which is simply not true.

Also, no one is stopping you from getting a nano or a previous generation shuffle which is still available for sale.

True, however, you can only buy Apple headphones, unless they release a remote with a standard headphone jack. I think that's what he's referring to.

Of course, I guess you could start with your Apple headphones to start the music, then switch to a 3rd party set, but that's just ridiculous.

Not an apple fanboy, but seriously. Apple makes plenty of products that allow the use of any headphones your ears desire. In the interest of making this thing as tiny as possible, this was the solution they have. If you don't like it, there are other options. For $80, this is what you get.:o

You will need an iTunes update to meet the system requirements listed on the product page (http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/specs.html). Current version of iTunes is 8.0.2, the one needed for compatibility with the 3rd gen shuffle is 8.1.

Kinda like people whining that the Mac mini doesn't come with a display or keyboard, the iMac can't be upgraded much, or the Mac pro costs too much. Oh yeah, forgot the whining that the shuffle doesn't have a display! It's as if you're forced to buy and like every Apple product.
