Here's a question for all:

(assuming the alleged "G5" comes out in January)

What if apple didn't call it a "G5"?

Instead, named it some arbitrary name like "Goblet" or "Tyler" :p

I think we'd know pretty quick if it was in fact a G5 or not, but it's not a bad idea especially if they still have G3's in the iMacs and iBooks.

I think they should call it Whistler or Blackcomb. ...
Isn't it their turn to rip off a Microsoft name. :)

I kinda expect the opposite. heres what i mean. apple has been looking at non powerpc chips after the g5 (according to some sketchy rumors). I suspect apple will keep the Gx naming though even if they ditch the powerpc. With intel releasing Px chips in the same number range as apple's Gx chips it provides a pseudo-comparison that many consumers like. you have your P4 and your G4. I think apple likes one uping intels chips in this pseudo name war. the P3 and the G4. The P4 and soon the G5.

Hi

I think it will end up being:

G3 / G4 - P3 / P4
G5 - Itanuim (Although the Itanuim sucks at the moment.

ditto on the intel sucks thing. i think we all know amd is the real maker of pc chips, but intel is what matters to the mindless masses.

i think assuming itanium is kinda assuming the g5 will stick around for much longer than steve wants it to. if we believe the rumors we will be moving through g6s and g7s fairly quickly (assuming motorola gets its head out of its ... posterior).

frankly id like to see motorola selling off the powerpc rights to ibm and apple buys all the other patents, and have ibm develop future chips.ibm has already shown us the can develop faster. the g3 reached 1ghz how long ago? but they cant sell it until the g4 gets up there! motorola is holding everybody back (except intel), its time for apple to drop them.
