Anyone using Moto's v600

I noticed this weekend moto is promoting and selling the v600 bluetooth flip phone. I'm considering buying this phone for it's bluetooth functionality and because I like moto's flip phones.

Has anyone used one yet? If so, what do you think so far? Does it work well with isync via bluetooth. It's not listed as a compatible device on Apple's iSync page. Maybe it's to new, yet the SE z600 is listed.

Haven't gotten the phone yet but in a few days i will be able to tell you everything about it. I won't be able to tell you about Bluetooth syncing tho as i don't have a Mac yet and i don't have a bluetooth adapter for my PC yet. According to the ATT site the V600 is compatable with Mac OS X. Not sure if that means its compatible with iSync tho. The Apple site does list a lot of phones there even Motorola so im sure eventually iSync should work.

i don't like moto flip phones since they tend to become loose after a couple of months, but I used the z600 on my PB without any problem at all. I'm sure it won't be a problem syncing it to a mac. You should head over to howardforums.com and ask someone there. I'm sure you'll find a good # of Mac users on that BBS. Good luck.

Well when you do find out, please let us know. I currently have the V400, a poor mans V600, but the V600 loks pretty darn cool. To bad its only for ATT in my area. I wish Motorola would make some smaller less feature intensive phones. I have no use for a camera in my phone, or a huge screen. I had a Motorola V8162 for Sprint back in the day, prob the best phone I have ever had. Style wise it was awesome. I wish Moto could make something similar to it insize.

not sure who your provider is, but you could always buy an unlocked v600 phone and use it.

Well i have used the phone for a few days and it is great. Everything works smoothly and the design is great. The only qualm i have with the phones is that they dont support pairing with another v600 or possibly any other bluetooth phone. Everything else seems to be great. I probably haven't gone through everything yet so i will update again when i work through everything.

Everything is really solid for the build. They seemed to put everything where it needs to be except for one thing. This problem I forgot to add earlier is that if you use the wired handsfree(or any other for that matter) in the handsfree jack you can't take pictures as the jack covers the camera. The buttons respond perfectly to the touch. All the menus are easy to read and navigate through.

As for reception i have tried it in Miami and a drive from Miami to Tampa. Miami has great reception and During the drive i had some great reception and the only time i had problems with reception was in the no service zones shown on the ATT map which from what i can tell for Florida is pretty accurate. In the next month i will be able to tell you more about reception as i will be driving from Miami to back home in Connecticut when school is out.

I just purchased the V600 ($179 with 2 yr contract with AT&T) and also a Bluetooth-enabled PowerBook. The Bluetooth pairing works just fine, but iSync isn't (yet) compatible with this phone, so while I can set up the phone to be a wireless modem, I can't sync any contacts or calendar info to it. I've sent off an email to iSync support, asking them when they think they'll put out an update to support this phone, but so far there's jusst a lot of untapped potential, sadly.

Sorry to hear about the iSync issue, i too got the phone for 175 from ATT, what a deal for a great phone. I just hope that issue is fixed by the time the new PM's come out so i can take full advantage of the phones potential.
BTW are you able to just transfer mp3's to the phone to make new mp3 ringtones or is the only thing that works is the modem capability??

I too now have the v600. I don't understand or believe those who say "it works great." The phone doesn't really "work" at all with the Mac. You can pair it and... that's it. Whoopty doo.I've even tried OnSync (http://homepage.mac.com/antonioferraioli/) and it's rather hit or miss (and mostly miss).

The Bluetooth support in this phone, thus, is rather crummy. The darn thing doesn't even show up in the Bluetooth menu! :-P I'm trying to browse the device now - we'll see how that goes. My guess? It won't. :p

I hope that iSync is updated quickly to support this phone, if that's possible.

Sorry to hear about the lack iSync compatibility, but I appreciate all of your feedback. In fact you've convinced me to buy a SE Z600 instead. I ordered it yesterday and I expect it to arrive tomorrow. I expect the Mac compatibility and UI to be great, as it was with my T68i, and I hope I'm satisfied with build quality and reception.

THe V600 is a beautiful design and sounds great. My biggest complaint is that it does not yet work with iSync, making it difficult for Apple folk to utilize many of the phones features. It is also difficult to obtain information about alternative ways to sync the phone and transfer information by other means, if indeed other means even exist. Again, the phone is very nice, but don't expect to use iSync at the present time and let's hope that Apple and Motorola get together on this one soon and add it to the list of phones compatable with iSync.

I think Motorola is really missing an opportunity by not fully tapping the potential of bluetooth. I really wanted the v600. It's a beautiful phone IMO, but because it won't iSync, I chose the SE Z600.

If Moto won't support iSync soon, maybe someone will create a solution and make it available on version tracker.

I was interested in the v600, but I'm surely not going to buy a bluetooth phone that won't sync with my Mac, so it looks like I'm getting the Sony Ericsson t616 next week. My local Cingular store says I can exchange it within 30 days for credit towards the new t637. They're supposed to start taking orders for them on May 24.

I have a non-bluetooth Mac and am trying to get the v600 to mount via it's USB cable but I'm having no luck.
The Mac spins up once the phone's plugged into it, and the v600's lights come on as if something's happening - but nothin!
The phone doesn't show up in Disk Utility either.

Any ideas how I can get MP3's from my Mac to this phone?

don't know why but the only way as far as I know to transfer anything to the V600 on a Mac is via Bluetooth. I bought a USB Cable as well but this was a no go. So I bit the bullet and invested in a USB Bluetooth dongle. The only limitation is that you can't transfer games but everything else is fine.
There are a few programs you might be interested in.
One is GSM Remote X with which you can:

With the help of this great thread, I've been able to send/receive files to my v600, and copy over each of my contacts one-by-one using Address Book and then editing them using GSM Remote X. I've had no problems with my contacts or files, but now I'd like to use my V600 as a Bluetooth Modem for when I travel.

I'm attempting to use the Motorola V600 as a Bluetooth Modem for my PowerBook (10.3.4). Unfortunately, I'm not having too much success since I keep getting "Modem Hangup" after it connects and negotiates a connection with Cingular. I had followed John R. Chang's instructions at http://homepage.mac.com/jrc/contrib/tzones/ and used the "Motorola GPRS CID1" script from Ross Barkman at http://www.taniwha.org.uk/. As a Cingular Wireless user with their unlimited MEdiaworks (wireless internet plan), I'm using the Cingular GPRS settings from http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html.

I've toggled the PPP Echo, I'ved toggled the TCP Header compression, and I've tried the various scripts as Barkman suggested, but I always get a hangup.

Has anyone had success using the Motorola V600 as a Bluetooth Modem? Are there others using their PowerBook & V600 with Cingular? Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.

I was having the same problem with disconnects until I went into Bluetooth Settings and turned on "Support for Non-Conforming Phones". Give that a try and see if it works.

Also, just to clarify on the iSync issue... the lack of support is really Apple's fault at this point and not Motorola's. The v600 uses the SyncML syncing protocol which is a newer, open source protocol. iSync uses an older one based on IR which was adapted for use with bluetooth. Since newer phones are coming out with SyncML protocol built in, then SyncML will probably be integrated into iSync. In fact, Steve Jobs has said that iSync will use (or rather does use, which it clearly does not at this point) SyncML, so support should be added in the future. However, I wouldn't expect it to show up in a iSync update before Tiger comes out.

Anyone actually tried calling Cingular tech support? I tried to one day. . .but couldn't get any help due to the fact I was calling from my v600 (it's the only phone line I have!).

I bought the Motorola v600 three days ago and so far, I love it.

As a long time Nokia user, I was apprehensive about switching but managed to negotiate AT&T down to $119 with a 1 year contract since I'm a long time power customer. (I read a post where someone got it for $100 but maybe he was even more uber than me!)

Anyway, the build is excellent. It's a great size and feel substantial in my hand without being too heavy or bulky.

Mmode works great. I get my yahoo mail perfectly. Even the camera takes better pics than I would have expected.

Some people complain that you can't add multiple numbers to a name. Since my old Nokia was the same, I don't mind. I think Motorola does that because voice dialing is paired up with each unique name. I will say that it's my first phone with voice dialing and I love it! The phone easily recognizes my voice and I've had no problems using that feature.

Call quality is also excellent. In fact it's crystal clear here in Detroit. People often can't tell I'm on a cell.

I haven't tried bluetoothing it to a mac but will post an update when I do.

If you want a smart phone with nifty features, I highly recommend this. I can't comment on isync compatibility, but as a pure cell phone, I love it!

The problem you're having with hang-ups is probably because you are trying to use the ISP.CINGULAR APN. This is only for Data Connect plans. You have to use the WAP.CINGULAR APN for the Wireless Internet Express plans (includings the MEdia Works). Ignore the fact that it's labeled as a "pay as you go" connection on Ross' site. That's not correct.

I wrote a big post (http://www.idmonsters.com/archives/2004/07/motorola_v600_w.php) about getting the V600 to work with a Mac and Cingular Wireless, including setting up email on the phone and wireless internet on your laptop through the phone.

Sorry to contradict you but it doesn't. I work as a tech journalist and SyncML support on the V600 was a question I put to a Moto rep at a press conference here to launch the phone on the Irish market. He confirmed to me that the V600 does NOT use SyncML.

I'm getting exactly the same 'SIGHUP' problem using the v600 on the O2 network in Ireland. The problem is worsened by the fact that it seems completely random. I might get a connection that lasts five minutes or I might get one that lasts five seconds. Interestingly, when I tried using a Nokia 7650 I had the same problem but it seemed to be associated with a loss of signal. In other words the bars indicating signal strength simply vanished. I was not mobile at the time. Whether the bars vanishing was a cause or a result of the 'sighup' I don't know.

Someone else here suggested checking the support for non-conforming phones checkbox in the Bluetooth preferences. I tried that and it seems to work.

it is straight forward to copy images, audio, or video using bluetooth file exchange, but how do you copy contacts from address book?

also, my mac (powermac g5) recognizes and pairs with the v600, but doesn't seem to know it's a phone. in bluetooth prefs, it sees it under "all devices" "computer" or "laptops".

any advice?

OnSync (http://homepage.mac.com/antonioferraioli/) is what you need for your address cards. It's free, but a little crippled without registering, but it still does the job. I suggest you make a group for phone contacts in your address book (no email addresses or anything) and just slap that whole thing over via OnSync.

I've read that awesome FAQ about how to config. my V600 to connect to the internet so I can browse with Safari on my 12" PB, but I have one question..

He says all you need is the $20/month MEdia plan, however I'm wondering 2 things: First, with the MEdia plan, does going online STILL count against your daytime/night/weekend minutes or is it not considered the same?
And is it REALLY EVEN NECESSARY to have that MEdia plan, or can I just config. my phone and get my 12" PB online through it and it simply count against my minutes? Any help would be appriciaited, and btw, I'm with Cingular.

No it's a separate billing. It's part of their Wireless Internet Express service. Billing is based on the amount of data transferred, not the amount of time connected.

That's a good question. They still have their older CID service which does dial-in through an actual phone number. That is what they call Wireless Internet. It is/was billed by the amount of time connected. However, I seem to remember that it was like roaming. It didn't count against your normal minutes it was a separate billing at some number of cents per minute.

This actually worked for me! My problem was the APN is actually "WAP.CINGULAR" and not "wap.cingular" as on Barkmen's page.

I have been planning to get a V600 but I recenly found out that the contacts will only allow one phone number and one email per entry, is this correct?

I have the V600 and have not yet found a way to program more than one email/phone number per entry - it really sucks in this aspect. Even with iSync each person's name/number is poster several times - one for each number - scrolling through them is a pain.

I just got the phone, and haven't Synced with the computer yet (my accessories come in tomorrow). I do know how to make multiple numbers per entry when entering on the phone (perhaps it will at least get you in the right direction). The V600 doesn't do multiple numbers per name per se, but what it does works better (in my opinion) - it is able to collapse entries that have the same name into a single line on the list... but you have to have the phone book set properly:

1) While viewing the phonebook click on menu > setup
3) Set "Sort By" to "Name"
2) Set "View" to "Primary Contacts"

Now you're all set! Each name only appears once in the main phone list. Also, while the name is highlighted you can press left or right to select which number it will dial when you hit talk (shown via the icon). While in this mode you can highlight an entry, go the menu, and from there select "Set Primary" to set which number is the default in the list.

I thought this was a weird method of multiple entry at first, but quickly realized how powerful it is; doing it this way allows you to assign different ringtones and ringer ids to each phone number for each contact, and not just each contact.

Hope this helps some people! Explore your menues... most of the time the menu button changes depending on what you are currently doing on the phone.

You know, with Apple and Moto pairing up for this "iTunes phone", you would expect to see some kind of effort from Moto for compatibility between their existing phones and the MacOS in general come very soon (they're past due in my opinion).

Perhaps when Tiger is released iSync will be updated to work with Moto's crippleware'd Bluetooth support?
