Insert page numbers in .pdf document

Does anyone know how to insert page numbers into a .pdf document? I have searched through Acrobat and Preview to no avail. I need the numbers to appear on the printed page. Is there another program that I should try.

...to do this is place the pdf file into InDesign, Freehand, or Illustrator first. Add the page numbers (InDesign makes this easier if there are allot of pages) then export back as PDF. Not elegant but it works.

I think I figured a way to do this with Acrobat but it was not as clean a way and I can't remember now how I did it. I think Acrobat called the page numbers I added some kind of note.

If someone has a better way I would be interested too.

Low-tech solution:

Make a blank MS Word document with the right number of pages. Add page numbers. Print this out. Then reload the paper and print the PDF.

The full version of Acrobat can do this, or try PDFpen from Smile.

I have tried using the full version of Acrobat (v5). The only thing that I have been able to do is to number the thumbnails. I need the numbers to show up on the document when printed, and I haven't been able to find a way to do this using Acrobat.

Thanks for the info on PDFpen. I am looking into the program to see if it will be able to do this easliy. I know that it is possible to manually place the numbers on the pages using Acrobat, Illustrator, and possibly PDFpen, but this is going to be a published document, so I would like the numbers to be in the same place. This would all but eliminate manual insertion and the "low tech" solution offered by wordmunger (it is a digital submission).

Acrobat should be able to do it. Go to Document>Add Headers & Footers there should be a page #ing option there, see attached.

It's 6, but I'm surprised v5 wouldn't have this ability.

Just a silly question, but did you originally create the PDF? and if so what app did you use? Can you go back and add page numbers to the original and create the PDF over?

If not then Acrobat 6 can add page numbers, 5 cannot. There was a huge difference from 5 to 6. I use both at work and home and the only other thought would be to create a PDF with the page numbers you need then open both PDFs and using the "object" tool copy paste the items from one PDF to another, you can call up a grid in Acrobat 5 with the "cmnd+u" keys so you can get somewhat of a consistant position.

The pdfs were created using two different programs (Word and Illustrator) and then combined in Acrobat 5. I could very well have added page numbers in Word and then tried to add more in Illustrator, but I wanted some form of continuity. (Actually this would have been my last gasp effort.) I guess I need to petition a little harder for an uprade to Acrobat 6.
