fyi, I just picked up a 2.8ghz Octo for $1899 after setting up a no tax business account. That's $900 off retail of $2799. You can get a 3.2ghz Octo for $1100 off...so $3599.
You have to go into the apple stores and see what they have in stock or get them to see what other stores have in stock.
thanks to all the guys on this forum for all the discussion and tests. I was waiting for the new Mac Pros to hit to decide, but I can't beat that price and the upgrade from my Dual 2.3ghz G5 is plenty for me for now.

And what sort of business do you have to have to get this discount? I just called and for normal individuals they are still $2499 for the 2.8ghz octo.
What did you have to do to get a the business discount exactly? Do you have a business? The person on the phone said you have to be qualified from their business division and have multiple macs running your business to get the business discount. Didn't sound like something you could just walk into the store and claim you had a business to get the discount. It sounded like there was more work involved to get this business discount.

I have a music production company. You need to fill out a no tax account form there at the store and setup a business account. When you get to the store ask for the biz sales rep.
This deal is for repeat business customers. I would go to the store and see what they have in stock. You can't do it on the phone.
Im in Tx, but another guy is CA said he was able to get the same deal.

I don't have a business, so I wouldn't qualify. Most people here probably won't qualify.

Could you still get a student discount with those?? So it'll be $2489 tax included after student discount?

Likely, your best bet is to call up and ask. I'm not interested it in for that price. $1899 and maybe I would think about it.

Yea for that price I'd rather just pay a bit more and get the nehalem or rather just jump up to the 2.66GHz model (which I really want).

I am in Ca and went to my local Apple store at lunch time at purchased a new 2.8octo for $1899 and got the educational discount on the extended warranty for 199. You can be your own business. i.e., bobs computer consulting. The store had both 2.8 for 1899 and I thought the 3.2octo were $3499 but I could be wrong and they may have been $3599. Even though it is last years model it was too much to resist. I could not justify getting a 2.26 for $2999 (educational price) even with the better video and more memory.:)
You don't need a resale license but then you do pay sales tax like I did.

What kind of business license is required? Sole proprietorship? Did you need to show any documents to prove you run your own business? What are the terms of signing up for this account? For example, do you need to purchase a certain amount of products annually?

Does this only apply if the specific store location has them in stock? I called the two near me and they were totally clueless about this. Just kept saying "check apple.com in the refurbished section". Even though these are new units.

Mar 12, 2009, 08:09 PM
yes, you need to go to the store. It only works with what is in stock.
But they will call around and check other stores for you. One store said they could even have it shipped to that store if they found one.
From what they told me, you can't stack discounts....so you can't get a student discount on the $2499 price. You're better off going the biz route.

The 2x2.8 Ghz which originally was $2799 is now $2299 with the student discount. I just got one at this price. I also saw the binder with the sheet at the apple store that shows this so it wasn't a mix up. If you purchased your 2008 within the last 2 weeks you can go in and get the new price. If you bought it originally with a student discount ($2799-200) you will get another $300 back ($2299 total). If you are not a student and bought it at $2799 you still get $300 back and hence the $2499 price tag. Either way to get this you either need to be within 14 days of your purchase, or get one of the 2008 end of life cycle pricing.

Well, I returned my Mac Mini.
I went in and explained that while I didn't have my own business I do use my machines for my work. They were able to give me the $1899 price.
Actually they did one better. They threw in Procare as my Procare had just expired. They actually changed the price to $1799 for the Mac Pro and charged me $99 for the Procare. So basically it was a wash.
Now I will need to sell my 2x2.66 Quad Mac Pro.
And now I can definitely use the 4870, I don't have to worry about rom hacking or that it may or may not work in my Mac Pro.
I'm very happy.

Just acquired a new 2008 base 2.8 from my local Apple Store. With business acct got it for $1899. Sweeeet.
Ordered 3 1TB internal drives from Newegg. Also ordered a ATI Radeon Pro
HD 3870, 16GB RAM, and an eSATA extender cable adapter from OWC. Entire system was $2860 or so. Will be very happy with this coming from a dual 2.5 G5.
Will think about upgrading to a Nehalem octo when prices come down (if they do).

What kind of business do you run and did you need to show any proof (business cards, etc.) to them? Also, are only old stock items available for discounts or can you get the latest MP's, as well?

At the Apple Store, I informed them that I am a business owner (sole prop) and they set me up with one of their business specialists. He had me just enter my contact details into some kind of database via a widget in the store and didn't ask for any verification like bus. lic. #.
As a business customer, they quoted me a 5% discount off the 2008 MP and the 2009 MP. I bought the 2009 and the discount was applied to the whole order including the AppleCare plan.
As a business, you still have to pay sales tax- even if you are a non-profit. The only typical exception to that is when you purchase items for to resell, but that shouldn't apply to anyone here.
It is difficult to tell from these posts, but I am curious what % discount are people getting on their business purchases?

Funny, because none of the Apple retail stores in my area (Phoenix) have any of the 2008 Mac Pros in stock anymore. Perhaps their remaining stock was already raided...
Heck, none of them even have the new 2009 models on display. The store closest to me has only a 3.2GHz model on display and the whole store goes under remodel next week for the remainder of the month. And they all told me to visit the Apple web store instead. Apple only lists a 3.2GHz refurb with options I don't want. Go figure. I should had grabbed an old model when I had the chance.
Will think about upgrading to a Nehalem octo when prices come down (if they do).
I don't think I've ever seen prices actually go down on Apple machines. The 2008 models remained at the same base prices for the whole time they were current (which was about a year and a half).

There are 2 Apple stores near where I live and the first one are out of the 2.8GHz 8 core and the 2nd Apple store has actually more than a few available.
So I called and made an appointment for a business purchase (use my permit) and the easy part is getting it for the business purchase price where even the employee told me nothings really necessary and just declare it as buying for a business but if you want tax exempt you would have to have some tax exempt permit.
Anyway I was well prepared with all that stuff and went down to the Apple store. I met with the guy talked to him about the mac pro where I pretended I didnt know what 3.0ghz or 2.8ghz was and just nodded to whatever he was trying to explain to me, just not trying to be rude.
Anyway after all that, just before I was about to fill in the paperwork I decided not to go through with it. I figured that even with paying $1899 (which is an amazing crazy deal) the first thing I would do is buy 16GB of RAM from transintl.com for $550. Then I would HAVE to buy an ATI 4870 since I already own a 24" LED ACD for the mini displayport (cost $349.99) and it will all end up being around $2980 close to $3000 after tax.
I know the 2.26GHz is $3299 but with student adc discount I could get it for $2639 + tax would be around $2856, so basically its just total of $216 difference and I can use my 24" LED ACD with it out of the box + I can buy 12GB of RAM for $200 from transintl.com (knowing from barefeats.com that 12 (6x2GB) had the fastest results).
Anyway the difference overall wasnt too big for me to buy the last gen, especially if I bto from the apple store online I can add the ati 4870 card for $160.
Also I still havnt seen a full benchmark differences from the new nehalem models as to the older ones. I figured that 40% less latency, 2x faster memory speeds, quick path interconnect would be worth the extra few hundred dollars

I have a video production company. I was in the same Apple store over the summer and bought a 30" cinema display. At that time I talked to the business person at the store and let him know about our company, etc. That was on file.
I did not have to show anything to them, no biz cards, nothing. He took my word for it.
I believe it's only the "legacy" machines that are available for the discount. They didn't have a machine in the store but found one and are having it sent over in a couple days. I didn't even go into the store this time, just called and left a message for the biz associate and he called me back.

On current items the discount is usually 5% with a biz acct. They are giving a much larger one on the 2008 base model 2.8 only I believe, perhaps to get rid of stock. Discount is $900 off the regular price before the Nehalems came out.

btw, the biz rep couldn't have been nicer.

I was able to get the discount as well! $1899 was too good to pass up. I bought one of the Western Digital drives Barefeats said was good to use as a fast startup drive and 8Gb of ram (4x2) from OWC. Total cost... $2317 with tax here in California.
They wouldn't give me much, if any discount on the new 2.26 Nehalem. So I figured the difference was about $1200 after tax which would buy a nice monitor :)
I'm going to wait for the 4870's to come down in price before upgrading the graphics.

No changes. But as I understand it, you wouldn't be able to make changes with in store stock anyway, even if it was a 2009 new model. Changes can only be made online through build to order.
**Word to the wise, the airport extreme card for the Mac Pro is no longer offered by Apple as single item and can't be ordered through them anymore. It is available through other authorized Apple internet stores. I ordered mine from B & H. You have to install it yourself though. Apparently, all the old cards that didn't sell in build to order options in 2008 got put into the new 2009 Nehalems.

Usually employees don't get the discounts, owners of business do. Unless your dad owns Viacom he wouldn't get the big discounts (or at least the person who is in charge of buying the computers for Viacom.)

There aren't many Apple stores, but if you have one near you, give it a shot.
I could only find one 8x 2.8 in stock on any Canadian online retailer, and it was still $2899.
I'm sort of kicking myself for not buying a refurb in November for $2599. I kept thinking "I'll wait till the new ones and decide then", well the new ones are here, but the old ones are gone. All the ones on eBay are in the US and are therefore more expensive than the new Mac Pros.

Yup the 2.8GHz 8 core mac pro for $1899 is NOT a myth. I went to my local apple store and booked a little meeting and the employee in the business department told me I can take one home for $1899 (no forms needed just took my word for it) but if I wanted no tax I had to bring in my tax exempt form.

I personally didn't have to show anything or fill out anything (I'm not sure if that was because the Apple guys knew my work.) They asked me a few questions but that was it. But that seems to be what others are experiencing too.

Just reporting to say that I just purchased a 2.8 octocore today for $1899.
I just told an Apple employee that I was looking for a Mac Pro for my business and I was curious if there were any discounts on the previous models. I was shocked that it was really that easy. I don't actually have a business so I had to pay tax, but it's still a great deal.
So I really got to thank this thread. I was originally shopping for a mid-range iMac and I couldn't be happier.

Yea, I know for something that fast its much cheaper than even the mbp on your sig. :D
My local Apple store still has a few left and I'm still pondering on getting one before its too late, especially knowing that you can put an ATI 4870 in one of these...

Well, I take _some_ solace in know that I got my MBP (previous gen) for $1650 after rebate through amazon, but it's only a tad more expensive than that. The mindblowing thing is that it IS cheaper than I got my Powermac G5 for 3 years ago even WITH the developer discount. I think I paid about $2k for it back then (but I did upgrade the graphics card & added bluetooth & wifi).

If you don't need the small size, return the mini in your sig and get it. It's so much faster than a mini. Mini is 600, this is 3x the cost with 4x the cores, and 800mhz faster in each core. Plus it's so much more expandable.
If space isn't the issue, the mini at $600 vs. the Mac Pro at $1899, the Mac Pro is a much better value. That's assuming you have the cash. If $600 is your max, then stick with the Mini. But obviously it's not, as you've been pondering it for a while now :)
The thing that did it for me was knowing that the 2x2.8 Octo was about on par with the newer Quad core Macs (the 2.66 and 2.93). 2.93 is faster in some things, but overall the 2x2.8ghz Octo will about as fast, in my opinion.
Based on that, and the fact that the quads are stuck with 8GB of RAM (unless the 4gig sticks work and you can afford them), the 2x2.8ghz Octo was a no brainer for me. I returned my $600 Mac Mini and RAN to the 2x2.8ghz Octo at $1899.
Just sold my MP 2x2.66ghz Quad 2006 model this afternoon for $1200.

The thing is.. I've already owned the 2.8GHz 8 core model early/mid last year and I feel that its not a real upgrade to me since I've been waiting for the Nehalem. For what it is the mac mini is an awesome machine for just $600 but at this point I really want a Nehalem Mac Pro, even with the steep price.
If I do bite and buy the 2.26GHz or the 2.66GHz Nehalem Mac Pro, I'll be moving the mini under my sony bravia xbr6 as a full time htpc running plex.

What was the 3.2ghz 8 core before the Business discount? $3599 is too expensive, when you can get the 2.8ghz 8 core for $1899. For $3798, less than $200 more, you can get 2 2.8ghz 8 core machines.

Just picked up a 2 x 2.8 for the $1,899 at the Indianapolis Apple store.
They have one left and as long as you have a business on file with them they will do $1,899. Jesse in business sales was the person who helped me in case anyone is interested.
Just in case there is still speculation that this is a lie you can see the $900 discount on the receipt.

Yeah, they told me I had to have an account on file as well. Then I remembered we bought a Mac Pro two years ago for the graphic designer where I work and I had them enter the company name when it was purchased. Since I used my credit card and had the company pay me back I am tied to that account. I will be using the system for some work tasks from home as well as my personal side projects so it was legit as well :)

the 3.2 8 cores are $1100 off, so $4699 is the list. Ouch
I'm plenty happy with the 2.8.
I've bought two at the $1899, one is for a friend. The rep called around for me and said all of the other 2.8's are gone. Some guys were buying three at a time. There are still several 3.2's around.
It's my understanding that some of the older iMacs and laptops were on special also, but don't hold me to that. I just know the apple guy said that all the 2.8's were gone and then mentioned the others. So maybe they're moving those as well.
The biz rep said that this is a test for Apple to generate bizness from repeat customers, or something like that. He said usually Apple doesn't discount like this, which I'm sure most of you know. They just send the old models back for parts and re-tooling.
glad most of you were able to get the deal as well. I picked up 16gb ram from transintl.com for $348, and 4 WD 1tb black hard drives from Amazon for $103 each.

Just picked one up at the $1899 price, just a few questions asked about my business but I did not have to show any documentation, but I had purchased a MacBook about 2 yrs ago at the Apple store along with various iPods since then.
I think the key is to ask for the Business Sales Rep first and then ask him/her about inventory, that is what happened to me on the last store I called, the general person that answer the phone told me that they had none in stock and then asked whether I was calling regarding a personal or business purchase. I said business and he said they might have some coming in, so he took my info and I got a call from the store's Business Rep like 5 minutes later saying they had a few in stock.
So be persistent and ask for the Business Rep.
I was on the verge of buying a fully decked out MacMini tohold me over until the next MacPro refresh, glad I saw this post.:D

Wow. The Mac Pro 2x2.8ghz that I just picked up on the 12th of this month (a few days ago) is old.
Serial # is G88033xxxxx
From what I have read, this means it was made in the 3rd week of 2008. Nearly just after they were introduced. This thing was brand new though. It was opened to put the iLife 09 drop-in dvd in the box, but otherwise it was brand new. Everything else was sealed.
This must have been sitting in the back of that store for a long time, or maybe at some Apple warehouse.
Apple's warranty checker states my warranty is good until March 11th 2010, so all is good there.
Anyone else get a really old Mac Pro recently with this deal?
This one works fine. I suspected it was old when both the 2600XT and the Mac Pro itself needed firmware updates, updates that have been out for a long time.

Thanks for posting about this deal! I was debating getting a Mac Mini and maxing it out in every possible way or getting a mac pro, but really what I wanted was something in between, with a lot of expandability. This deal made it a clear choice.
I went to the Smith Haven NY store to get an $1899 one this evening. They asked for a business card and wanted to know a bit about my company but I got the impression that it wouldn't have been a problem if I had "forgotten" my cards.
I smelled a little mildew when I opened up the box... Seemed like this thing was pretty old. But, everything works fine, as far as I've checked.

Not sure what that means but I'm guessing it was built in late 2008 (week 51?). It had a bit of a strange smell when I opened the box but it works fine and the smell has worked its way out. Warranty is good until March 15, 2012 (I bought AppleCare).

I wonder how many they've sold at this price. I wonder how many they've sold as a direct result of this thread and the OP posting this info. I've seen this thread linked to by someone in the Apple community forums already, so word is spreading. If there are any 2x2.8ghz Octo machines left to be had at the Apple retail stores, they probably won't be there much longer.
Maybe this explains why they haven't shown up on the online Apple clearance section on the Apple Store.
Yeah, My Mac Pro 2x2.8ghz is probably the oldest-newest one you can get. It's already over a year old, but brand new. Doesn't matter to me, as long as it's under warranty. I'll buy Applecare for it when the 1 year warranty gets close to expiring.

It was 2 hours drive back to the Apple Store vs 1 hr to an authorized dealer/repair place. They can order any part needed (under warranty) so a new machine may not be necessary.
That being said, if the same thing happens again, or another board goes out I'll press for a different machine.

As long as it is stored properly I can't imagine having a computer sitting around unused causing any damage. It probably just shipped from the factory with a fault or they had it stored somewhere with too much humidity, etc.

Same thing happened to me. I never knew about Apple's business program, so the last computer I bought from the Sagemore store in Marlton, NJ was bought as an individual. I called up today to try and get the business discount on the mac pro, and I was told that I had to have a long-standing relationship with the business team at the store AND be a volume buyer (James, the business person I talked with quoted me something ridiculous like a computer a month.)
James claimed that they submitted the request to corporate and that corporate turned it down. James seemed annoyed through the entire situation and never went to bat for me or tried to work things out. He kept coming up with reasons why I couldn't have the discount (volumen buying, long standing relationship, my last purchase wasn't over 5,000, my last purchase was too long ago, etc.)
I'm pretty upset about the entire situation. The Sagemore store just lost a customer.
I'm in New Jersey, by the way.

Well, no go here. The Business Partner strongly contended there is no such thing as $1899 unless you've done business in the past and the best he could do was $2499 for the 2.8 and $3999 for the 3.2 that has the upgraded NVidia and two optical drives
I also had to do a very long synopsis on my company and the use of this machine...at which time I got the requisite "Nehalem is better...and use Logic" schpeel which I had to cut off with a lot of quotations from this forum (thanks guys)
So a $300 on the stock 2.8...still better than my corp discount and I do own a business so I'm not feeling any guilt
Wonder if I can still apply a Gift Certificate to that price?

I can confirm purchase of one of these units for 1899 in the Chicago area. It was purchased through the rep in charge of working with businesses. What they seem to want is contact information for future business sales. The guy I bought it from created a widget containing contact information. The actual purchase was set up by the business rep at another apple store who called around in this area and set up the purchase for me. They must work on commission or receive brownie points for units sold.

I forgot to mention that you should also grab the free $100 Cannon printer.
Apple has a $100 rebate on Cannon printers when you purchase a Mac.
Nice little copier/printer with scanner!
can't beat the price and the rebate check came within 2 weeks.
If you didn't grab it when you bought the Mac, I bet you could go back with the receipt and get one.

I didn't grab the printer, I have no use for another printer, but I did grab a copy of iWork Family Pack for $69. Don't forget to grab iWork if you need it, it's on sale with purchase of a Mac.

Oooh, I'll be in Chicago this week. Do you need to prove residency in Chicago?

This is interesting considering mine died the 2nd day I had it. Waiting on repair status, and they have the box so I can't check the SN.
Anyone else had a $1899 2.8 MP go bad?
Just found out my logic board went bad, Apple is overnighting a new one to the repair place. Said there was some light blinking on the video card? What would cause a logic board to just "go bad" all of a sudden, and is it likely to happen again?

Just took advantage of this promotion.
The biz sales guys are great. I called upstate NY after getting the cold shoulder at the MePa location. Crossgates location found a couple nearby and put me in touch with the SoHo location who processed my order. I did the entire transaction from my home and will pick up my new machine when they get it in.
If your local store doesnt have it, ask them to check surrounding sister stores for stock. I will only order through biz sales moving forwards.

Bad quality capacitors happen every so often.
A good indication of if this was the case is what it smelled like afterwards.

No proof of residency required, however, I seem to have gotten the last one (2.8 x2) in this area. Some of the higher end ones may be left. This particular discount only applies to the discontinued mac pro's. Apple is calling these "end of life" I was told that this is the first time they've sold discontinued products locally- they usually are shipped back and sold on the 'net.

Confirmed - after dealing with 2 local stores that were very arrogant and nasty, the closer of which gives wrong answers continually (most recently, telling me the output resolution of a white mb to an external monitor is the same as the built in screen). I drove 3 hours today to get the deal from a store where the employees were as nice as can be...all of them! Apparently, they didn't get the "Treat Customers Like Idiots" memo. It's nice to know it's not the same way in all stores. I'll be waiting until I travel next time I need something from the Apple Store instead of going to the local ones.

Fwiw, Im in LA (city not state) and I figured I would just skip looking in the city. There was another poster who said they had. So I called the Apple Store Victoria Gardens. Arthur, had to look up the EOL prices but eventually "found" the 2.8 for 1899.99. Although the apple care was 249.00. He has one left, but didnt mention anything about shipping.
This is what he has left, 1x 2.8 (thinking he may have a few more as they appeared out of the back), 3.2 for 3599. imac 2.0 for 899, imac 2.6 20" for 1049. and the imac 2.8 24" for 11xx (i dont remember the last part). The 30" ACD was only 5% off like others have reported.

After sweet talking the business rep in Fort Worth I managed to get mine knocked down to 1899 even though I did not have a previously established business relationship. It took about an hour and a half to get them to help me out but they eventually did. Now if I need to make a purchase I will be driving out of my way 30 minutes to the Fort Worth store just to help those guys out.
I am super excited with my new purchase.

Scored the last 2008 2.8 GHz Octo-Core MacPro at the Short Pump Apple Store in Richmond, Virginia today for $1899 thanks to this thread. Quite an upgrade from my 2003 2 Ghz Dual G5 PowerMac.
This is amongst the best discounts (over 30% on this machine's original price) Apple has ever offered and is comparable to that available to developers and employees. EOL products of all kinds will be available at a discount at all Apple retail store to business customers on an ongoing basis. The business representative was not aware of the program, but confirmed the prices when he went to the back and seemed incredulous. All he required was a business card, which I am sure will be entered into a customer database.
If you know what you want, better hurry!

Guys, Apple typically posts end of life discounts first to the employees and then to businesses who purchased from the store. The standard business discount is up to 10% depending on your rep. In addition, if you happen to have a friend that works for Apple, they can get you 10% of anything in the store, anytime. The education discount is anywhere from 8-10% depending on the model. The ultimate deals are quarterly specials, where the employees can purchase for themseleves or friends and family absolute steals. A brand new iMac 20inch that listed for $1199, is $749 in the store for them at quarterly price, $799 for friends and family. Also 28% off all items in Apple refurb store (off list price). Educations has the best price on AppleCare, around 33% off, employees only get 25% off. The deal at $1899 is to get rid of stock, and that really can be for anyone who has purchased before, it just depends on the store manager. They prefer business customers because they usually return to purchase more equipment. All I can say is I am a happy MacPro 2009 owner from a MacPro 2008 2.8 that I absolutely loved.
Peace,
Noushy

So I just returned with a 2.8 pro from the apple store. I don't need all the power, but I was considering a 24" from the refurb store and this is only a couple hundred more and will last twice as long. Plus I have a dual display set up and multiple HD's that can go into the pro. I know I am a poser, but a poser who got a screaming deal.
Heart was set on a older quad, but for less than the price of a quad refurb I got this.
Trying to sell off my other macs before I open it and play with it. It is staring at me, telling me to open it, mocking me.
The internet will be so much faster with 8 cores!

I sincerely wish you the very best of luck. According to the rep I dealt with, the only reason why she was willing to scour the earth for an additional 3 EOL 2.8 Mac Pros was the fact that all the apple stores are shipping their units back to the warehouses on 3.31 where they will be later listed on the apple site and offered for $2500. If you can't find an Apple Store in NY for the business discount, I saw an ad on Tekserve's site that they have deeply discounted the 2008 Mac Pros. (obviously not as good as $1899, but still more bang for the buck than a 2009 model at full price, if you ask me.)
They also have 2.8 x 4s for $1850.

Tell them you have a post-production company and that you need the Mac Pro for Logic Studio. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant. They PROBABLY won't ask you to prove anything. They took my word on everything I said. Basically, they just asked me (over the phone) what my business name was. That was good enough for them.

At the business price I couldn't pass. I was looking at an imac, but I have two displays already and I have 4 HD's, plus a time capsule. I wanted (yes I know, wanted) a desktop.
I also bought a quad 2.8. Bought the quad w/ 23" ACD on Sunday, then Monday I happened upon the octo deal. Oh well.
1899 is not much for an octo machine, I would rather have 8 cores and keep it 3 times longer than an all in one iMac with 2 cores.

Last night I was able to get one, but I had called several places around the country in a search. This is what I was told - If you had spoken to the store on Monday and they were holding one for you, then you were fine yesterday. However, the order came down from the Mothership to return all EOL Mac Pros, and the stores were complying with the order - boxing them up yesterday for shipping back today. Unless you could physically get into the stores to purchase them before they closed yesterday, you were out of luck. There were several stores that said they had at least one in stock and would have been more than happy to sell it to me, but only if I could physically get into the store since they can't technically do a purchase over the phone.
I'm sure some stores will be different than others, but most of what I've found in the West has been pretty similar in situation and explanation.
