In what has become an almost-weekly event, Apple has seeded a new version of Mac OS X 10.5.7, known as Build 9J30, to developers. World of Apple publishes (http://news.worldofapple.com/archives/2009/03/13/apple-delivers-new-build-of-mac-os-x-1057-seed-notes/) the seed notes, which reveal that the lack of Safari 4 beta support is the only remaining issue Apple has chosen to highlight. One week after the previous seed of Mac OS X 10.5.7 Apple has given developers another build this time in the form of 9J30. The rapid development of Mac OS X 10.5.7 suggests a public release before the end of March.
Developers testing build 9J30 have been asked to focus on new areas such as Flash Player, USB and Flash Drives, iCal and Widgets.Apple seeded Build 9J22 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/02/26/apple-prepping-os-x-10-5-7-update/) on February 25th and Build 9J27 (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/07/apple-seeds-another-new-os-x-10-5-7-build/) on March 7th. The declining list of known issues, brief time intervals between seeds, and decreasing intervals of build numbers between those seeds suggest that Apple is wrapping up development on OS X 10.5.7 and should see a release in the near future.

Service Packs for Windows come out infrequently because they simply combine hundreds of hotfixes into one installer. There are many incremental Windows updates released every Patch Tuesday, and thus updates work much the same vein as they do on Mac OS X.

Can I just ask. Is this Snow Leopard. I know it says 10.5.7 but i'm just wondering cus' its getting a bit confusing as sometimes there are posts saying 'Snow Leopard seeded to developers' and some that say '10.5.7 seeded to developers'. If not then does this include Quicktime X and the new Stacks features? Or is that 10.6. When will 10.6 be released?

SNOW Leopard is 10.6.xxxx
LEOPARD is anything with 10.5.xxxx
10.6 is assumed to come out in the summer or beyond.
10.5.7 will probably be out for free to all 10.5 owners by the end of the month.

Speaking of Safari being good, I know that Apple's putting in a new version of Flash into this update. Since Flash is such a unruly resource hog, I'm hoping they reined it in a bit. For example, Firefox will use about 40% of the CPU idle and in the background when some webpages are open. Disable Flash, and it goes down to almost zero.

So my question is this...
Just bought a RADEON HD 4870 not realizing it wouldn't work in my Mac Pro (dummy me).
Should I return it or wait for 10.5.7 which should run this card?
And anyone got any firm info on the Tuesday March 17 release?
Thanks

If you bought a new Mac Pro with 4870 in it, you don't need 10.5.7 to use the card.

I dunno...maybe he bought something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102801)?
Not everyone buys their parts from Apple. I used to build PC's from parts off of NewEgg before I switched. I've never upgraded my mac because it is a newer MBP, but I would assume that if its the same chipset then the Apple driver would work fine with it. Correct? Though it may void the warranty, unless he didn't purchase Apple Care and its out of warranty anyway.
I'm really tempted right now to part and price out a Core i7 Hackintosh. Wonder if kexts are available for it yet. I haven't messed with OSX86 since I sold my old Inspiron 9300.

I bought the 4870 @ Best Buy thinking it would work in my Mac Pro not realizing that it required 10.5.7
Right now I have the stock ATI Radeon HD 2600 that came with the Mac Pro running 2 monitors, but now I want to add a video card for my HD tv. So basically I am wanting 3 monitors.
Should I stick with the 4870 and wait for 10.5.7 or is there another vidoe card that will work with the current 10.5.6 that I can pick up easilly.
Thanks

I didn't pay attention in recent years (switched to laptops), but they used to come with a different firmware. Since the Intel-switch they might have changed this, but given the price difference I doubt it.

Well Apple's site says that the HD4870 is supported on the 2008 and 2009 Mac Pro's and that you need OS X 10.5.6 or later. So according to there site you should be able to use the card if you have Update 6 installed.

What I am finding out now is that the 4870 needs to be flashed.
Now all I got to do is find a PC with a 16X slot to flash this damn card.
This has now become an obsession!!!
I will win over this card.

While I love an update to OS X how is everyone doing with 10.5.6?
Consider I've rarely had problems with updates like some poor users.
For the most part it has been fine for me. No hardcore random crashing but I am getting some weird behavior.
Finder likes to hang when I am at home on my network and connected to my NAS. Finder never gracefully handles this and the problem is that when this happens I have to restart the computer and I almost always have to hold down the power button as something hangs the restart.
The only other problem I have had is that my Internet will randomly disconnect while I am at home. I even have it set to an assigned IP so I have no idea why it goes by by. Sometimes this disconnect will cause the first problem to happen and then a restart is necessary. If I figure out what is happening then I can turn off the airport card and turn it back on and it is good to go for the rest of the night.

Windows Vista SP1's changelog is 30 pages long. We haven't yet seen documentation for SP2 but it seems to be pretty big also. Windows also gets way more updates than OS X on a *scheduled* basis, none of this "oh is it coming out next week" nonsense.
Your kind of thinking is still in the backwards Windows sucks OS X rules. Both have their strong points and weak points, the truth is that Windows has 80% marketshare, and OS X has 10. Even with their "crappy" Vista.
I hope they break the whole secrecy and start putting timelines of their fix schedules, hopefully IT departments will start looking into OS X for future deployment strategies.

That's a good point, because from time to time Apple implies that it is making a bigger effort to make inroads into the business community. But businesses want more transparency in release schedules so they can plan their own resource allocation; they really don't like secrecy to the point of paranoia.

Apple's secrecy with it's O/S releases are most of the time warranted because they often hold information on upcoming new products or features.
I'm on Apple's side on this debate. They should stay that way.

I disagree. For one thing, Apple generally makes quite a few details of its future OS releases public. Look at what they've previewed about Snow Leopard so far. (On the other hand, details of future hardware are kept quite secret.) But mainly, product roadmaps can be made public in such a way that demand is increased rather than reduced. Intel is quite public with its product roadmaps and hasn't been hurt by doing so.

You and many others as well. Every year or so Apple updates "zonk" my Airport network. This most recent problem - just as you describe - is ONLY impacting my quad 2.66 MacPro (Intel) - my iMac, Mini and MBP are able to access the network as before
