View Full Version : Post your PPC / 86k Macs and Pre Macintosh Apples!

I want some pictures of some PPC / 86k Macs. Pre Macintosh stuff is allowed too!

Here is my PowerBook and broken iBook. My PowerBook is shown on it's desk. I need a new monitor as my PowerBook supports 30 inchers!

The iBook will cut on and boot off an external HD but it randomly locks up. (not anymore it only runs the fan)

I am 14.

It is a 128k, perfect condition, still works fine, sitting sideways on a dusty shelf in my closet.

ALL my Macs period are PPC.

EDIT:

It was the 1.67 lo-res version, but with 128MB VRAM BTO.

does it have a 100 GB 5400 RPM HD and 2 GB ram because if it has this it is identical to mine!

I need at least 1 intel even a Hackintosh or a mini though. I do not have a single intel Mac. My newest is my PB.

Actually, yes.

It's long gone though, sold it about ten months ago.

Just build a $300 Hackintosh. It's basically a 20" iMac minus the Apple and the screen.

My parents weren't happy with my hobby. In fact, I'm not allowed to buy any more computers. :( Otherwise, we'd have us a little contest going on here. :p

And I am basically all PPC anyway. My mini is dead basically, it only turns on sometimes and it's missing its optical drive, hard drive and pretty much everything else, so I don't count it as a computer. ;) My iBook G4 is me "flagship" macine. (Though I am looking for an eMac for a new desktop Mac.)

WTF?

Do you consider a PC with an Athlon 64 X2 old? No. Do you consider a 1.67GHz PBG4 old? Apparently.

Not angry or anything, that just always confused me. :p

Of course, 68k Macs ARE old.

Got a 12" iBook G4 I bought about 5 months before the macbooks came out. At first that kind of bugged me but I love the size and design of my iBook :) Also if I'm working on my bed and my feet get cold I have a habit of resting my feet on the palmrests to warm them up, would've cracked a Macbook for sure

Changed the apple logo to pink (not my iBook, camera battery's dead)

Can't bear to part with the iBook... :(

But you would with a 1.67 GHz PowerBook? I like PowerBooks better than iBooks. Or is it the small size?

If my iBook worked I would probably add internal bluetooth or wireless usb because when I took it apart to try to fix it I found a unused plug and I found out it was a USB port. I would probably add an antenna port too so I could add external antennas for better WiFi reception. I have seen people pipe the wire out the keyboard but that would put marks on the screen since mine is a 14 inch so I would pipe it out a vent on the side. Also maybe a 1280*1024 screen too.

I love my iBook so much because it's the only computer I've kept for more than about four months.

My iBook has been a bigger money pit than my PB that is why I want to fix it for once and get rid of it! I will fix you and sent you back where you came from iBook! 2 $310 repairs at once vs lots of small things ($100 keyboard $130 battery $50 hard drive 2 $80 power supplies and now a $500 logic board repair.)

dmmcintyre3
Mar 14, 2009, 03:56 PM
I think the DC-in board on mine is dead/dying. Charges intermittently and rarely, if ever, turns on.

My PB's would short out and make the adapter cut off temporarily. I need a new logic board because mine randomly locks up. I also need a new top case because my trackpad is dead. My battery will not work unless you squeeze it and any movement after you get it to cut on and stay on will make it cut off. I do not have a power adapter for it because when I was using the one for it with my PB the wire melted when the DC and Sound Card shorted out. It smoked and sparks flew near the adapter end. If it did this while I was not home I would be out a house and PowerBook.

Does the fan run full blast when it does not cut on?

iMpathetic
Mar 14, 2009, 04:01 PM
It does not cut on AT ALL. (when it doesn't cut on.)

dmmcintyre3
Mar 14, 2009, 04:03 PM
Ok then it is not the logic board. I would try taking the bottom cover off and reseating the power cable that runs to the DC In board

then try the power button cable.

If that does not work use sleep instead of shut down.

iMpathetic where did you buy your PowerBook from and were did you sell it?

iMpathetic
Mar 14, 2009, 04:11 PM
I already did that. Looks liek the board itself is fried. It's only a $30 part.

dmmcintyre3
Mar 14, 2009, 04:22 PM
check the power button cable

If you find any cheap NEW logic boards for 14" 1.2 GHz iBooks let me know. USED ones are in the $300dreds but I want a new one as they only last 6 months - 2 years. If I keep it it will make a nice server as I will not need to fix the mouse or the battery.

Yep, I've had five fail on me under warranty. Apple replaced them again and again without hesitancy, but it was really annoying to have to keep taking them in.

Those PPC power adapters (the ones with the circular light that were not magnetic) were just so poorly made. I mean, the thing bends (the connecter) if you even flex it a tiny bit. I wish it had magsafe....

My mini is dead basically, it only turns on sometimes and it's missing its optical drive, hard drive and pretty much everything else, so I don't count it as a computer. ;) My iBook G4 is me "flagship" macine. (Though I am looking for an eMac for a new desktop Mac.)

Did you take your Mini's hard drive and optical drive for your iBook?

And what is it's specs?

How do people have problems with computers only turning on sometimes. I would just leave it on all the time.

Well, it turns OFF randomly as well.

I thought about putting the superdrive in it, but I don't think I have the experience to do it. The hard drive, haven't really thought about it. But I've heard it's even harder to do.

Specs of the thing were (are, depending on how you look at it)
1.83 GHz Core Duo
2 GB RAM (After the accident, before it was 512 MB)
80 GB HDD
Superdrive
10.4.11

My parents insist I shut down everything at night to save energy. I shut down my iBook anyway, so I'm used to it. (Basically what happened to the mini was I accidentally chipped a resistor off of the logic board when I was upgrading the RAM. I can get it to work by holding it in place sometimes, but it doesn't always work. As far missing the optical drive and hard drive and such, the mini has a little plastic holder for both of them which they connect to, and I threw that piece away when I thought it didn't work anymore. Yeah, I'm an idiot.)

It's not that hard, I re-seated my DC-in board the other day.

Intimidating, but if you have more than two brain cells, cracking open an iBook G4 is not that hard.

Well, it turns OFF randomly as well.

Mine turns on anytime you want IF you plug it in or hold the battery in but it turns off randomly too. Is the battery low when it turns off randomly? If not you can try lowering the battery connector with a few pieces of paper. IF the screen (backlight too!)stays on when it cuts off randomly it is the logic board.

If it's anything like the white G3's, I'm definitely not trying it. That thing was a nightmare.

It was easy. But if you thought the G3 was hard then the G4 is almost the same. The hard drive / optical drive is harder than the DC IN Board.

It appears that I have the best PPC laptop still in use!

On my iBook the battery connector was up too high causing it to not connect to the battery and I had to lower it with some paper to get it to work

I will when I get it setup. Right now I'm having problems with the wireless software I'm trying to use, and I'm also having problems getting Leopard cloned to it's HDD. Hopefully those issues will be resolved in a few hours, until then there's the picture I posted in the "I love eMac's" thread in the Apple Collectors forum.

Oh. well, the battery connects, I had it running for a streak of four days and then it got all angry at me again.

BUT I did find an iBook G3 DC-in board that looks exactly the same as the one my iBook G4 has in a closet. I'm gonna see if that helps.

My iBook's DC in board shorted out and some sparks flew. Did not damage it or the power adapter. I thought I fixed it when I found the modem was loose but it did not fix it. The strange thing about my iBook is that motion does not cause it to lock up it is like it is on a timer. It locks up at the exact same point every time. It will not lock up unless you try to boot it. It will run forever at the open firmware prompt. When you boot it it locks up on boot at the blue screen that is is common for it to lock up when you have an old version of application enhancer installed but the same install will boot fine on my PowerBook. When I boot the iBook off the PowerBook's HD it says it is PCI and graphics related.

What?

Alright, that covers the why.:p But my real question is; how exactly is that machine able to do that? I know there's emulation software, but I wouldn't think an iMac G3 could handle it.

Here's one I just did. It's a screen capture of a Windows 7 desktop from one of the other computers used as a desktop background.
The other one was Photoshop.

Thank you for posting that.

Got a question ... if it still powers up can you please record a video of you deleting something that shows the OS X ... PUFF animation please? A lot of ppl I know here on these boards and at work that I know personally or at the carbonation store here in Toronto do not believe me that it had that animation.

Thanks in advanced.
