Will upgrading the hard drive void the warranty?

More than likely, yes...especially considering that the iMac is not designed for user-servicable components beyond RAM.

That said... if you feel confident in doing it and don't mind risking the loss of the warranty, it's your choice. For my money, I don't plan on opening mine up until the warranty has already expired.

I prefer to run larger external drives as data storage because of the multitude of benefits they offer.

The only internal drive i'd consider in the future would be ssd.

That is the least of it. He will also have to remove the screen.

I wold say the risks outweigh the benefits, unless of course the internal HDD is going bad. Other than the OS and apps, you can keep everything else on an external drive without noticeable loss in speed.

Well I've finally made my decision to go with the 20" 2.66ghz iMac over the Mac Mini for the sole purpose of speed...more speed!

I would however like to know your thoughts on how to compare the 2.0ghz and the 2.66ghz while I'm in-store just to make sure the speed difference is there for me.
