Question:

If I swap my hard drive from an old macbook (with ilife 08) into a new macbook, can I use the new macbook's OS discs to upgrade to ilife 09?

use migration assistant. You may run into problems if you just switch the hard drives because they're different models.

Back up all your files first, then format your drive. Swap the hard disk and do a clean install. That should work perfectly.
