I just bought a new iMac (2.93) today and every time I turn it on it makes a weird zzzZZ noise. Same thing happens when I wake the computer up from sleep mode. It sounds like its coming from the disc drive area. IDK if this is normal or what to do to fix it but hearing that noise it is pretty annoying.

That's normal. That's what happens when you have moving parts in a machine.

Is it normal for it to be louder than other machines?

sounds like a bad harddrive, Im not 100% sure but you should take it in to the :apple:store to have it looked at.

Yes.

If it is in the area of the optical drive, it is not the hard drive.

It is the optical drive checking for a disc. To confirm, try leaving a disc in and see if the noise changes.

Its the optical drive. I left a Disc in there and now it doesn't make that noise when I boot it up.
