View Full Version : Does anyone else have a Tinker?

Hi,
I was just wondering because I have gotten a Tinker since yesterday, does anyone else also have such a thing? So are we entering another Tinkerstorm....? Really don't hope so, this Tinker is killing my production!

being a nubee to folding, what is a "Tinker"?
Dreadnought
Apr 7, 2004, 11:32 AM
I already expected this question would rise. A tinker is a WorkUnit (WU) that takes a lot of time. A windoos machine handles it better then a Mac because it doesn't support altivec that the Mac has (increases foldingspeed a lot!). So, you have to crunch solely on your cpu power. And also a heavy Tinker has a lot more steps then a Gromac WU. The Gromac WU's are going to 100%, the tinker go with frames. Tinkers have frames of 100, 200 or 400. And I have one that has 400 frames!!! On my G5 1.8 it takes about 4 days running it 24/7, and you only get 70 points for it. When there is a tinkerstorm, a lot of people get tinkers and then you really see a hit in everybodies point increase and in our team.

I would assume this is a little to small to be considered a Tinker but so far on my G4-500 its been 27 hours and only 71% done.

So how do you know if you have this tinker?
Well, there are two types of WU's, Tinkers and Gromacs. Look at the Stanford's project summary page (http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html) and that has all the info on every WU. How many points, if it is a tinker or Gromac, how many days you have got to get it finished, etc.
Sparky's, allready saw your name with the new folders! So you allready finished your first WU! Congrats!

For those of you using the console versions, make sure that you enable the advmethods switch to force F@H to give you gromacs proteins. You'll still get an occasional sTinker, but they will be few and far between.
You can check the switches that F@H is running with by opening FAHlog.txt and looking immediately below the initial hashes for the "Arguments" line.
If -advmethods is not listed there, you're more susceptible to sTinkers. If you want help adding the switch I can do so, but it entails some Terminal work.
For those using the GUI or Screensaver clients, please consider switching to the console version.

If your install was via mc68k's script or via the Terminal, you're running the console version.

Please be patient whith me Rower_CPU. It was very helpful for me when MrMacman gave me step by step directions. When it comes to the Terminal, I want to be very cautions. The only thing that I use it for is to type "work" as instructed by MrMacman. I have 3 Mac's that I will need to change. ;)

I believe that you can open the Terminal application and type the following and press <return> or <enter> to see:
grep "Arguments:" ~/FAH1/FAHlog.txt
NB: There is one space on each side of "Arguments:".

Rower, you refer to this as a "switch". I have checked my log and it is listed as on I guess, but is it something that would "switch" off?
Also, I have modified my signature a little to reflect the Stanford site and our team, but is there an easy way to have my point count automatically update?
I do it now manually each time I log in I go there first and check my stats then update it.

So how do you know if you have this tinker? you look at your process list to find what core folding is running.
core65 = tinker
core78 = gromacs
to look at your process list type in top -u
The core will be at the top since it has the most CPU time
alternatively you could use activity monitor (10.3.3)
-or-
process viewer (10.2.8)

Command-line switches listed are "on". If it's not declared when launching the process, it's "off".
Manual sig updates are the only method, I'm afraid. The closest you'll get to something automatic is something like wdlove's link to a stats image. If images in sigs were allowed it'd be a piece of cake - but there's no way arn will allow that.

I was only correcting bousozoku's command. TextEdit is really your best bet.
The commands above, when typed into the Terminal will return the content of that line in FAHlog.txt and let you see what's there. They do not change any of your settings.

That's because the rough performance estimates actually work with the version 4 client and the G4s are poor at floating point work. My G3 gets more (s)Tinker WUs than my dual G4 because my G3 is faster calculating floating point at the same clock speed.

The Tinker unit that I keep getting is p638, and you'll know if you have one of these because it takes about an hour to get 1 percent of it completed. :( I've been forcing the Folding client to do only Gromacs units because letting the G4 struggle with Tinkers is a waste of resources, especially during hot weather. OK, here's the breakdown: FAHlog.txt is just a simple text file, readable by any program that works with text. You could open in in Word, TextEdit, etc.
Terminal-
Typing in the commands listed will show you the contents of just that line in the fie.
TextEdit-
Using File>Open you can browse to FAHlog.txt and open it to view the contents of the entire file.
So, you have 2 completely distinct options - the commands for Terminal have nothing to do with TextEdit. Is that clearer?

Nothing involved with this process could have any negative repercussions on your Mac. All you're doing is looking at the contents of a text file. Let's just forget the Terminal options and try TextEdit.
Open TextEdit and then go to File>Open and navigate to the folder where Folding@Home is installed and then open FAHlog.txt and look at its contents. All we're concerned about is the top 12 lines or so, which should look like this:
# Mac OS X Edition ############################################################

Arguments: -local -advmethods -forceasm -verbosity 9

The first line that says 0 frames completed is the one from when you first started the client. The current status is 5 frames completed, and this message is displayed for each frame completed. If you restart the client, that first line will say 5 frames completed and 395 remaining. The text in the terminal window doesn't refresh except by inserting new lines at the bottom of the window. :p

This topic is in the distributed computing forum so that's good. However, the distributed computing forum topics also appear on the macrumors main page. It would be nice if folders would label their topics as such to avoid wasting the time of others with vague (and sometimes misguiding when understood out of context) topic titles. Sometimes it will take several posts to even figure out that the topic is folding.
Thanks, for all the non-folders.

I think Kyle? is seeing the threads on the macrumors.com main page on the right hand side - scroll allllll the way down to "other mac topics". this field just shows the latest posts from all forum sections.
But i do think it is EXTREMELY unfair to single out Folders for topics that aren't descriptive enough for him. there's a topic a day in one of the other sections that are far less descriptive, why single us out?
and "thanks for all the non-folders" ? are the "non-folders" having secret meetings regarding all the posts here?
i say get a grip Kyle?. its YOUR fault you don't know the topic is folding, not ours. if you click on a post, and the top of the page reads "Mac Forums > Mac Interests > Distributed Computing >" then there's about an 80% chance that the topic is Folding. Heaven forbid you might even learn something new.

It would do everyone good to try to label threads better, DC forum included. Personally, I think "Tinker" in the title is indicative enough for people to know whether or not the thread applies to their DC project. So, let's leave the moderation to those who've been appointed to the task. ;)

It's all right, folks. I only posted this here because this thread happened to be another that I clicked on from the main page and found to be about folding. Obviously there are many vague titles out there, but folding happens to be a common one since there are many threads about it. It's not really a mac topic. I'm only asking this as a courtesy. You might try some in your responses. This isn't a high school forum.
This isn't your fault and it's not mine. I visit through the front page because I don't have the time to visit the forums in depth, and the front page will group some unrelated topics. I tried folding before, but my ibook can't pull the load the way I use it. Work units have weird names, as do some computer programs and electronic devices and sometimes folding topics can sound like they are something else. This leads to confusion.
So maybe you don't want to bother to take the time to put a tag in the top of your title, something like fah, or f@h, or whatever. It's not that hard, but whatever. I can live with it. I'm not going to get upset about it if you don't want to. I was only asking as a favor, folks, not trying criticize or cause you to have a fit. Maybe this could be dealt with by the mods and admins anyway, by adding a heading on the main page. Whatever.

-advmethods can't guarantee Gromacs-only units - it just sets the preference. If Stanford wants people folding Tinkers, then that's what people fold. Period.
Here's a list of all the switches and their purposes:
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/console-userguide.html
Ok, that's fine if you're running the cl client, but how do you ad switches when using the graphical client? I'm using XP computers for most of my folding, and prefer the graphical client as it just sits in the taskbar, annonymous and semi-hidden. I'd still like to be able to set the switches how I want. Can that be done via the command prompt? Is so, how?

i'm sure there's another way to do this....this way u can put the shortcut in the startup folder

The dual 1.8 is ripping right through them...

I hope it doesn't run out of time before it finishes a WU!!!
Poor little thing.

Mine is taking about 60 minutes per percent--about the same. :D I guess I should stop using the machine for several days because that will help it.

Can anyone tell me what's happening with this? It started at 12:33 and it's now 5:10 from what I see 0 out of 400 frames are completed. or does the "frames (5)" actually mean there are 5 finished?
Normally the (5) means that five are indeed finished. Unfortunately, I don't know much about InCrease (other than it magically appeared on my desktop after a 10.3 upgrade procedure  ) so I don't know what they are showing. If you look at the raw log, you'll be able to tell.
(in terminal)
cd Library/Folding@home
cat FAHlog.txt
(lots of text swirls by, go back up to find out what's going on)

I finally got another (s)Tinker and it was taking 38 minutes per frame (not percent) on my dual G4/800. I just moved it over to the G3/800 to improve the speed, since it was going to finish on May 10th. If it's like previous (s)Tinkers, it will process about 7 percent faster on the G3.
It's processing at 33 minutes per frame on the G3 and the Gromacs WU that was on the G3 is taking 18 minutes vs. 28 minutes. It's fast enough to pay for the time spent moving things.

Well, I've got two p638 WUs now and I'm all out of G3s. It's certainly good to be able to shove the one over there to save some time. When the one finishes on the G3, I suppose I'll move things around to speed the remainded of the other p638. That's only going to work if I don't get another p638 on the G3. :D The burden of doing the right thing, every time. :D

Reading through this thread, I noticed your comments about the -advmethods and realised you are suffering from a common misconception.
This flag means that you are prepared to take late beta units, it is not a -gromacs flag! :D
Late betas are proteins that have been through Stanford's internal testing and have had provisional testing by the external beta testers, but may still have undiscovered problems i.e. this flag says "I am willing to try less stable units" For the last year or so, this flag normally meant that you get Gromacs as that was the latest core, but it is not a guarantee
(There was even talk of getting new Genome cores with this flag before that project was unexpectedly terminated)
The recent recalculation of scoring for Tinkers means they are now actually preferable (in most cases) for WIntel based systems - I'm not sure how the PPD rates work out on Macs.
Ultimately, Stanford will hand out work they want doing, not necessarily those units that score at the fastest rate. If everyone specifies -advmethods (as they appear to be doing) I suspect that the flag will eventually get ignored altogether

I wouldn't know how to specify one unit over another at all! All I know is I just finished my second Tinker. It took 4 weeks to complete both (each just over 12 days). Scoring isn't important to me. Competition is all well and good but just knowing I am doing something good that may help in finding cures for certain illnesses makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something. Having survived colon cancer and 2 years later having my gallbladder removed (via the emergency room), I am proud to be a part of something that would allow others to avoid what I went through, and sad knowing there are those that won't survive in the meantime.
I just keep on Folding............

I've gotten 7 of the big nasty 400 framers THIS WEEK.
the poor old G3s aren't handling them very well, either.
My production has fallen off sharply this week as a result...grr.

There's another flood of p638 units, but Gromacs units p563 and p909 are also received frequently. If you want to use TINKER and not have to wait as long for work units to finish:

my athlon XP 2500+ (running at 3200+) ;) is currently without any sort of internet connection, and will likely stay that way until broadband connection costs come down some more, or my day of defeat withdrawl kicks in too hard (which will probably require a little boost of HL2 online envy to push it over the edge). Then I'll start using the athlon, too, and not have to worry so much about tinkers.

My poor Pentium III (I dont like to leave my iBook on all the time) is due to finish its current tinker Sunday night, for a total of 8 days of chugging.

I look forward to any tips/suggestions thta can help out a newbie to the forums and to folding. :D
