Seriously? Were you beaten as a child or something, because you have issues.

Not to mention, you have two crappy computers by your standards too. Why not take your own advice?

Here's my recent setups:
Now:

Nice Setup. What keyboard is that?

Nice Setup. What keyboard is that?

Logitech MX5500. It is a bundle that includes the bluetooth version of the MX revolution mouse.

How are you using it? Steermouse? I have the same setup with my mac pro and not many buttons work on the mouse. The keyboard works fine for volume, track, sleep and function keys.

Are you using built in BT or the provided dongle?

I read that like "no, not intel only, I had been Hoping for for PPC support, what a bummer is won't be there"
perhaps that's what he meant?

Yes that is what I meant to say.

Thanks! Yah i got it with m MacBook Pro yesterday (along with a iPod:D)
So far its really nice. I like the little screen and all the card slots. Very convenient. Maybe its just on startup, but it seems to take quite a while to get ready. Maybe its just me. Either way, not a big deal. I still love it. Fairly quiet and fast. It sure beats the Canon iP4100 i got on the rebate for my iMac last year. Maybe lasted a week.

just because some teens work there asses of does not mean they cant buy themselves something nice

We aren't actually allowed to tell you what torrent, he could probably give you the distro name. However, all distros work differently for different computers. You'd have to try all of them until you find one that works for you.

Thanks! I'm 18 btw. I payed for the iMac on my own about 2.5 years ago. The rest of the stuff on the desk was either a hand-me-down (rear channel speakers for example) or a gift. Except the iPhone, I bought all $400 of that on my own, and it was worth every penny.

I didn't torrent anything actually! You just need a vanilla copy of OSX (leopard) and you're good to go. Not one of the "restore discs" that came with your macs, they're designed to only be installed on the machine they came with. I got my iMac like 2 weeks before leopard came out, and the upgrade disc worked just fine

What is the point of having NAS if you keep it on the same desk as the computer?

What is the point of having NAS if you keep it on the same desk as the computer?

By NAS do you mean the Time Capsule?

If so, it gives internet and backup to 2 iMacs, 2 Unibody MacBook Pros, and a white MacBook in our house, plus 2 iPhone 3G's as well. It was just the convenient place to put it (the aluminium iMac pictured is the family computer, the others are our individual ones) because it's where all the wires and stuff were already as the main computer has always been in this room (since we got our first computer...ah the memories).

Is this what you were asking?

wowzaa, thats a big compliment :)

yerp, the asus is connected to my mbp with the mini display -> dvi adaptor.
the cables are running through the wall, from behind the monitor down to an exit hole behind the desk, then they run along clips on the back of the desk so as not to drop into sight :) . all cables connected to the macbook pro are also running along the back of the desk to a powerboard which is hidden beside the sub. speaker cables are under the carpet.
i can get a photo of the back of the desk if you want ?

thanks for the compliment mate :)

i like the speakers, sound is pretty good, they are THX certified and the control pod is simple. the bass is controllable so you can adjust that to your taste. they are pretty loud when you want them to be :)

i got a 2.1 setup because they are mainly used for music, so i had no real need for a 5.1 setup in my room, thats what our lounge room is for :)

but yer, i am really happy with my choice in speakers :)

yes, my head is most certainly above my desk :)

as for the sound, i wanted my desktop as simpe as possible, so i put the speakers on the ground, and while i did lose some sound quality, it wasnt enough to make me want them back on top. they work well for me, so i am happy with them where they are :)

I bought an eMac on ebay the other day and its on its way, but I thought it would be cool to take a before and after shot of my setup with and without it.
Right now I just have a Gateway GT5622. Pentium DualCore @ 1.8Ghz, 3GB RAM, 320GB HDD, and it is running Vista Home Premium.

I had to really think about where to put the eMac, its just soo big! I hope it fits on the left side of the desk, in the empty spot.

Ok so for awhile now on Mac rumors i lied about my identity so now I'm coming clean because I'm proud.

So I'm 13 and this is my setup. I use it to video edit in final cut express + Motion + Color + AE. Some of my work is on www.youtube.com/geekofcomedy My latest one was testing chroma key. I need a studio light TBH if you watch it. Also I fix computers all the time in school and there was this retarded time when the computer screen had a blue hue on it and while everyone thought it was a virus because a class mate downloaded a screensaver. I went into task manager like an idiot. Googled all the processes and I hit my leg off the Dell box and it went. The fricken cable was loose! But other times it would involve: Word, Fixing the audio etc.

Laptop: Dell Insipron e1505 (specs in sig)
Middle Monitor: random Dell 15" model - Connected to server underneath the desk
Right Monitor (CRT): Some random CRT only supporting 640x480, looks good when watching anime though...
Server (Not shown): Dell Dimension 3000 (3GHz P4, 512Mb Ram, 80GB IDE HDD, Debian Lenny)

I took this while cleaning my room, so the crap on my desk is my Networking books, some printer paper, some chips (in the bag on left), a plate, my Creative Zen :D and a figure (rep to who guesses which one it is...)

I have my ageing Toshiba Portege M200 (1.7GHz Pentium M, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, nVidia 5200M 32MB), a slot loading blue iMac (600MHz, 300-something MB RAM, CD-RW), about 3 x86 boxes that no longer work and heaps of extremely outdated PC parts (think 486 CPUs, S3 gfx cards, mobos without USB, an old "clicky" keyboard, 5 inch floppy drives, 500MB HDDs etc.).
Although I have a heap of phones, including a HTC Magician, a HTC Hermes and an LG TU500 that I extremely regrettably paid $225 for..

Oh and I also have a 16GB 2G iPod Touch :)

I want a white MacBook, I love the little white G4 iBooks but they don't have enough power.

I thought it was time I posted in one of these threads.

My 20" mid-2008 iMac, my 15" early 2009 unibody MBP and my 16GB iPhone 3GS. Very messy and cluttered, I know. I don't generally use my MBP on this desk (well, its more of a surface then a desk, way too small), but do have it there on occasion. I use the iMac mainly for movies while I save up for a TV, and have all my DVDs ripped to it. What am I watching? ABBA In Concert :P

What's your position? I'm a checkout chap.

Here is my setup, just cleaned it up today. Will stay like this for a few days before it is dirty again. Actually no, its already got crap all over it.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3350/3440371943_c0565f7831_b.jpg

iMac 20" 2GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 1TB Time Capsule, Wired KB and MM, and an HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One. See the Woolworths stickers? :D

I have that same exact desk. It used to be in my room when I was like...7...then I got tired of a gigantic desk in my teeny room so I made my mom take it out. Opted for a tiny desk a computer couldn't even fit on. Not like a plan on having the money for a computer anytime soon though.

(One of the few times I have posted on MR with a computer. iPod touch FTW.)

Blah. We used these eMacs at my highschool. Those things were a nightmare. IE, PS6 and some other ancient programs on them made them very unattractive to use. We also had multiple banks of iBooks that suffered from extreme B.O.... Not sure how Apple managed that one, but those computers stunk worse than any thing I have ever smelled.

That really does say a lot about how software makes a system attractive or unattractive to use.

I have one of those G3 iBooks. The smell is caused by the outgassing of the glue used to hold the keyboard together. I'm glad they switched to something else on the G4 iBooks. Eesh!

350 euros, 2 years ago which was a great deal back then. but nowadays it can be obtained much cheaper. It is the 1.8Ghz SP.
You should definitely avoid powerpc if you want more power. At the moment it is more than enough for my needs, sometimes when I want to glue 15 pictures in to a panorama (using PSCS4), things can get a bit slow.

Resident OSX86 guy here. On the Mini 9/Vostro a90 it works out of the box, native support by Apple, on the MSI Wind (U100, not sure about U123) it has to be replaced, unless they recently came out with a driver for it there has been a driver made for it, but I would go with a native supported card. Pretty much everything works right after install, most you have to do is install kexts in "SLE" and run DellEFI, and then you've got a fully working, apple-update-able MacBook Mini/Nano.

I use a Wind. The utility to connect to WiFi is, thought ugly, a bit more helpful that Airport some times (though I'd never choose to use it if I didn't have to) and is easy to hide out of the way when you don't want it. Updating is not a big deal for me. All non-system updates work fine under Windosx86, and when it comes to updates like 10.5.8 and the like, it's not that difficult. For me, it was a choice of physical preference and a history of absolutely terrible Dell computers that led me to the Wind. As for the few shortcomings, they have been (thus far) easy to get around. No complaints.

Meh, I would still get a Dell, even though I've had hell for a history with them, just purely for the fact of it being easier to use/setup. 2 questions though: Why WindOSX86 and not retail? How is the driver/util for the stock wifi card?

Corey Grandy
Aug 20, 2009, 01:27 AM
Retail required either an external disc drive or an 8GB flash drive. All I had was a 4GB flash drive. I went with the options available to me and I don't have any issues with it. It seemed rather impractical to spend $50.00 or more just to install something with which I don't find much different than what I have now. I see literally no difference in Leopard as it is on my iMac versus on the Wind.

The driver works perfectly. The utility is easy to use and gives you exact connection percentages as well as other information you'd surely have to go searching for with airport. Airport, for me, only provides a pretty menu bar icon and bit more genuine Apple-ness. The utility on this is actually often better than the Airport on my 100% genuine iMac. Go figure.

I don't trust Dell hardware - after going through 6 different Dell computers with nothing but problems I just can't bring myself to give money to them anymore.

Meh, I would still go retail, you can use an external hdd or hook up the hdd in the wind to the mac and partition it twice, but thats a bit complicated... I got retail running on my Dell e1505 and it handles like a dream, I'll be happy when I get my iMac. I hear you on not trusting Dell. I have 4 and one was "totalled out" and I got a replacement, and that one had the faulty 8600M GT gfx die in it, and that was replaced about 2 months ago. I personally would just get it and then do any repairs myself. But hey, to each his own. On a side note, is there a thread like this one but for over 18? I turn 18 in October...

No problem. It only stands to reason I suppose. OS X doesn't tend to be as much of a hog as Windows. Linux though, that's surprising.

Yeah, I was suprised when it ran OSX better than linux. Only kinda of linux that doesnt completely hog it would be Debian (the GUI one) or a terminal/server version. Its kinda limited as to what it can run though, like KDE or XFCE it cant run because of the IGP chip. But yeah, its pretty good, its running retail 10.5.6 and does pretty good, albeit no QE/CI. Once I get my room cleaned up, I'll post some pics of my setup, right now I'm trying to clean and not sneeze all over the place, Im sick...

Not so much the hardware (My MBP is more powerful than your MB etc) but its the cleaness of the setup. The 24" ACD connected to the MB, and the Bluetooth KB/M make the setup look so good.

BAHAHAHAHAHA! im a dude man. "check-out chick" is the colloquial term given to people that work on cash registers (over here in aus anyway) - mainly because chicks do it (not being sexist, thats just how it is).

its alright pay i guess. once i get my computer business up and running im hoping to earn ALOT more then $20 an hour haha

I didn't realise "checkout chick" was an Australian term. Learn something new every day.

Anyway here's my setup:
MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, 250GB HDD, 2GB RAM (original unibody)
iMac 2GHz, 250GB HDD, 1.5GB RAM (wired KB and MM)
iPhone 3G 8GB
iPod Mini 4GB
iPod Shuffle 1GB
Time Capsule 1TB
HP Photosmart C7280 All-in-One Print/Scan/Fax/Copy
Sony DSLR a300 w 18-70mm and 75-300m

Sorry about the terrible photo. I don't have my good camera with me (because it's in the picture) so my Pentax Optio E30 point'n'shoot will have to do for this.

My Mini sits in its dock doing nothing. I don't think I've used it in over a year. Poor thing. I should be treating :apple: products better than that :D

I got it down to take this photo and thought it had died but just needed a reset.

It was my first iPod (first Apple product I think) so I have to keep it!

MacBook Pro 2.2GHz with 4GB RAM and stock 120GB HDD
iPhone 3GS 32GB
Western Digital Passport 120GB
Western Digital Passport Studio 500GB

Why so many external drives, do you have a band/are a song writer? And I bet you are the middle kid in the picture? No, I'm not a stalker, just looking at all the Bush-ness.

Hahahaha...yeah I have a lot of external hard drives because I do write a lot of music and my band www.myspace.com/cometquintet. I also record quite a bit. On top of that lots of Photo editing and music. No, I am not the middle kid, I am the one on the left but that was also over 4 years ago. Check out the MR thread here, I posted in it recently.

Haha I was trying to match you from your avatar. Anyway, I like your music. I like to listen to classical, piano-y, or jazz type music when I study, so your songs are now on list. Haha thank you

Thanks dude! I am glad that you like it. Yeah, my music is sorta all over the place. I mean, John Frusciante avatar, Pennywise background, jazz-funk band. If you are wondering, I am playing bass in the band.
