I've had this used iBook 800 G3 for a while. I want to use some programs that run in OS 9. Unfortunately, I didn't get any restore cds with the purchase. I tried using the OS 9 cd you could order after buying OS X.3, but it doesn't work. I got it to install with some tampering, and it does work for classic. Actually booting into 9 is another story though. If anyone would be willing to sell me or make me a copy of their restore cds let me know. Let me know what price you would want as well.

A copy would work great :) . Do you have the same iBook? What would be a fair price for your troubles and shipping?

iBook 800s will not boot into 9. Just the way they come.

this is not correct
iBook **G4's** will not boot into OS 9
but the original poster's iBook **G3** 800 will boot into OS 9.2.2 just dandily. that's actually "just the way the came"

The last generation G3 ibooks, which this 800MHz could or could not be, WILL NOT boot into 9. I know.

Can't you just download the needed drivers?

Where would I download them?? Apple put the necessary drivers on the restore discs. The version I have installed isnt even for this hardware, I had to play with it to even get it to install. Apple doesnt make driver downloads they just assume you'll use the restore disc.

Actually, it depends. The 800MHz 14" will, but the 800HMz 12" wont. They stoped it being able to.

I hate to argue, but 800MHz 12" iBook G3 will boot into 9. All of the G3 iBooks can boot into 9. http://manuals.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Manuals/specs/ibook/L27500A_EN.pdf Notice that it says Mac OS 9 and not Classic Environment under software. I have a 14" anyways.

Yeah, I know I could, but $120 isn't justifyable to be able to play a few games. I'm a poor college student.

How specific are the restore CD's to a specific model of computer? What would happen, for example, if someone used a powerbook restore CD on an iBook? Would it even install?

AdamR01, I know my tibook came with OS install CDs in addition to the software restore CDs. So I have 3 software restore CDs, a Mac OS X.1 install CD, a Mac OS 9 install CD, and an applications CD. Did your computer come with a Mac OS 9 install CD? I remember when I got Panther I decided to reformat my hard drive and reinstall everything. First I used the Mac OS 9 CD that came with my computer to install OS 9, then I installed Panther on top of that. Did you try backing up your hard drive, reformatting, and then installing OS 9, followed by Panther?
