View Full Version : Blasphemy: Their remaking Short Circuit!?!

I just have one question? Why? Why? Why? Short Circuit was awesome just the way it was, there is no need for a remake. They should just re-release the original in theaters, so todays kids can see it the way it was, not some stupid remake! Why does Hollywood have to mess with the classics? I mean what's next, Batteries Not Included?!?

What can I say except, "I am standing here beside myself!"

Dimension Films has acquired the rights to remake the 1986 cult favorite Short Circuit. Yet again, Hollywood has run out of new ideas and has decided to remake an old one. I’m sure someone at The Weinstein Co probably noticed a poster for Pixar’s upcoming WALL-E, and after having the standard “that looks like Johnny Five from Short Circuit” discussion (everyone thinks they are oh so clever by making this observation… And by the way, if you look at the image below, you’ll quickly realize that WALL-E doesn’t look as much like Johnny Five as your memory might lead you to believe) he realized he stumbled on gold, ready to be re-mined.

The original film told the story of a military robot who runs away from the government after developing a conscience and a personality, the result of being hit by lightning. The good news is that the original screenwriters/creators S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock have been hired to pen the remake. Apparently the film will be similar in theme to the original (ie the peace message), but the producers say it will factor in advances in technology. So basically, we’ll probably have a stupid looking computer generated advance shape-shifting robot… uggg.

Discuss: Do you want to see a remake of Short Circuit? Will they ruin it?

I think by maybe 20 years from now all movies will be remakes, or remakes of remakes. But yes, that is sad, I've got all the Short Circuit movies in my netflix queue and Batteries Not Included :)

I'd like to see them update the 3-d graphics on The Last Starfighter, Tron can be skipped.

Remakes of good films are done when studios run out of good ideas, as far as I'm concerned. I guess we'll have to sit through Johnny-5 rapping or doing some hip hop or such. Bleh!

Good God not again.
As I always say, if you don't agree with all these remakes don't give these studios your money for them! Just wait for them to hit TV. :o

I would think in this case that's 'reassemble' :D

They can remake Short Circuit, but only if they get Ally Sheedy back in the same role.

...methinks they're trying to grab on to the coattails of Wall•E. Robot$ with eyebrow$!

Ally Sheedy, not going to happen unless you change the role of the woman helping Number 5 to a bag lady, or escape mental facility patient.

aka, she didn't look good in her role on Psych.

Someone sold one of the Johnny 5 robots on ebay a year or so back.

It was a working remote controlled robot. I believe it had 3 controllers, one for movement, another for facial expression and the third for speech?

Went for $100k + I recall.

I so wanted it.
