I unplugged my PowerBook and the screen and backlit keyboard dimmed and then brightened back up. Was there a power surge inside my PowerBook?

I doubt it haha. You have different power setting for AC Power and battery. My screen dims when I unplug it too.
dmmcintyre3, a power surge would likely not manifest itself the way you have described, so I'm inclined to say this was not a power surge. Rather, is it possible that when you were unplugging the MBP, you may have cast a shadow across the light sensor and this caused the quick dimming/brightening to occur?
