Seems to me that developers who were accepted into the program during the initial beta period (before mid-July of last year) get access to the beta firmware, whereas I've never had access to any beta and have had to wait until the firmware was released to the public, and which point I could download the new SDK and test my apps to ensure they still work under the new firmware. Hopefully this policy will change with 3.0.

I too am hopeful that will change. I'd love to see ALL devs get access to 3.0 beta but won't be allowed to publish the apps until 3.0 is actually released. That would be the fair thing to do.

But, it's probably wishful thinking.

If you're a registered iPhone Developer, from the iPhone Dev Center (once it's back up). If not, you're SOL.

So does anybody know if I apply to be an iPhone developer and pay my $99 fee today, will I be able to download the beta?

Even if you apply today, it'll probably be a few days before you're even accepted. And you don't need to pay the $99 to get access to the SDK. That part is free.

ethana
Mar 17, 2009, 02:51 PM
Also, 3.0 Beta may not have all of the features announced today, and the ones they do have may not be working.

If you're not a developer, then DONT SIGN UP. It's not worth the $99 to turn your iPhone into a brick if something screws up. You'll get a working copy in June like everyone else.

My guess is that this will be mostly an SDK Beta, where many user features may not even be turned on yet.

Besides the beta-ness will the phone fully function with the beta firmware? Like network access, Wifi etc.? Some devices I've tried in the past were crippled with beta firmwares. I have two iPhones so I'm not too bothered about paying $99 installing buggy firmware to try out the new stuff.

I wouldn't fenrus. ;)

Also, you need to log in to the dev center to access the link, still.

You can just skip a page to get to the link, though. (That's about 30 minutes less waiting time. :D)

Now downloading at 25/30kB/s. This is gonna be a long night - oh yeah, night, awesome. Heh. :P

If you're a registered paid dev, you have to accept the new TOS and only then can you get the download. So the direct link isn't even much use to anybody I don't think.

I was just able to get in and downloading at a steady 2.2 MB/sec according to Firefox. 16 minutes left... about 1.7GB to go. It's 2.1GB total.

Edit: Oh wait that's the 3.0 SDK... :)

I have finally gotten through to the ADC website and I started to download the new firmware. It looks like though you might not be able to downgrade, here is a quote from the PreInstall advisory:

By installing iPhone OS 3.0
beta software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently
“locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to earlier versions of iPhone
OS.

zerocustom1989 - Lengthy approval process. You will NOT get instant access for $99 as far as I remember (I have had access since July, so I don't know if this is still the case).

You're better off just waiting until it hits the torrent sites.

If I put 3.0 firmware on my iphone, can I still run 2.2.1 apps (either my old apps from the store or 2.2.1 apps I write)?

Yes they are ... so I do not see why you can't build 2.2.1 apps in the new sdk but whatever so the moral of the story is you can install 3.0 without the SDK ... and moreover if you want to hold off on upgrading the SDK ... go right ahead and you will still be able to develop for 2.2.1 .. just not on your phone

Well, I'd like to attack 3.0 now, but continue 2.2.1 dev. So, I guess the next logical question is can I install the 3.0 SDK but still compile for 2.2.1? Or, can I perhaps have both SDK's installed on the same box as if they're 2 separate programs?

If possible, it sounds like the latter is the way to go.

joshsroka, this is what I fear the most (from the 'read me before downloading' section of the developer page):

iPhone SDK for iPhone OS 3.0 beta is for development use only. This new version should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 3.0 beta software development and cannot be used for submitting iPhone OS 2.2.1 applications.

Mar 17, 2009, 07:50 PM
If you have two macs, the best thing is to only update one of the SDKs. As someone said, you'll be stuck with the simulator, but at least you'll be able to compile 2.2.1 apps.

I had a brief moment of panic after I hit the button, but I've accepted the consequences and convinced myself that the benefits outweight the risk (my warranty was expired anyway, and I was planning on getting the new phone when it came out [hopefully June, or earlier] so we'll give this a shot) The no turning back did scare me a little, but, I'm living on the EDGE- ha!

Anyone tried any downgrading, yet? That's the #1 thing that concerns me considering this is my personal phone that I develop on and I'd rather it not suck to use for the next 3 months. :o

In thinking about SDK 3.0 prior to installing it ... I am going to assume that you can not compile for 2.2.1 because of all the new API's that are opened up and the existing changes or expansions of the API's that you previously had access too. Therefore it is my belief that if you have installed SDK 3.0 you will only be making apps for SDK 3.0 on it...

In every version Apple has released you could always build for previous versions and don't know why this would be any different. You have to select what target you want when you build it so as long as you're not using frameworks that are no in older versions you can go back to 2.0. It wont actually let you build with the wrong version, if you select a previous version and you have new stuff you get errors.

I just built a 2.2 and a 2.0 app and they built and installed fine.

Anyone having certificate issues when trying to run an app on their iPhone with 3.0 on it?

Mine says some error about a profile certificate all of the sudden.

Maybe contact Apple?

Also, iPod still won't launch for me..

Oh yeah, and for those saying that it takes too long to sync, you could have always used the 'Update' button instead of doing a restore to 3.0. :P

Damn, good thing you only installed it on a test device and not your regular-use phone right? :p

I'm getting an error about my bundle identifier now that I installed 3.0 SDK. I'd post this on the official Apple boards but they are down.

Apparently "*" is now an invalid character to have in there, despite all the descriptions on the Apple site of using it if you aren't going to be storing data on the phone?

Can anyone do me a big favor and activate my phone, on their developer account, as a developer iPhone?

Would really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Does anyone know what aspects of the 3.0 SDK if any are under NDA because there is some questions I certainly have after using it.

See Section 10.1 of the iPhone Standard Agreement.

I'm sure if they are basic enough you will be fine, in the iPhone forum people are giving away the iPhone OS and selling it so if anything Apple will go after them first. ;-)

Has anyone else had problems with multi-touch in the photos app? For some reason resizing and then moving the image is really screwy.

So I tried to install the 3.0 software after registering on the site. I did everything correctly. I went to Apple and got my phone replaced (I know people :D) went home and tried it again. SAME ISSUE. got the phone replaced again, and I am way to scared to try it again. What the heck went wrong???

Can't say I feel sorry for non-developers joining the developer program just to get the beta. But keep buying, people. You're just helping Apple make more money for access to a buggy beta. lol

Just curious, when Apple releases an update, how to do you update the phone without restoring? Can itunes detect it?
