Hey everyone!

My band just did a cover of a Stevie Ray Vaughn tune called, "Leave My Little Girl Alone." Would love to get some feedback on it if you please?

Stevie's version of Voodoo Chid is my all time favorite. blows Hendrix's away in my opinion. no disrespect but Stevie was such a good guitar player.

I have to agree with you on Stevie's take on Voodoo Child. I'm originally from Austin and I'm biased, but having seen him live numerous times going back to before he recorded his first album. Double Trouble played a Halloween party at a residential co-op called the Ark in Austin back in the early 80s, and my girlfriend and I got in for $3 apiece. The band was in a corner of the big dining hall on a small stage about a foot high. After a while, some idiots started griping that the music was too dated - they were more into the post-punk scene and new wave bs - but SRV and the boys just ignored them and cranked out some awesome rockin' bluesy numbers. Voodoo Child was a mind-blower performance. During breaks they were real mellow and friendly. Stevie was never anything but cool. Their recordings don't do justice to the power of his guitar live.

Yup, I'm a fan! Those were great days to be young and living in Austin, TX.

I, too, wish you and everyone could have seen him live and realized how truly amazing this guy was - such a natural. Eric Clapton was basically all burnt out, and may as well have been retired when he saw Stevie Ray one night. Clapton was so inspired by what he saw that he got back into his music with new energy. So many legendary players pay homage to SRV. We lost a lot when he got in that helicopter...

SRV is one of my favorites. I still kick myself for not seeing him in concert. He was playing a concert a couple of hours away from me the summer between high school graduation and starting college. I didn't go because I was working. I thought, "Hey, I'll just catch the next tour". A few months later, he was gone.

And as much as I love Hendrix, I still think Stevie's cover of Little Wing simply blows away the original. He took a little 2 minute or so ditty and turned it into a masterpiece. Another favorite of mine that many people overlook is "Life By the Drop" from The Sky is Crying. He was just as good on the acoustic as on the electric, and the lyrics are incredibly moving. After hearing that album, it saddened me to think what he could have done sober.

His version of Little Wing ain't bad either.
I got to see him about a month before he died, on tour with Joe Cocker. LOUD!
And damned good too!

I must apologise, it is this, not The Wind Cries Mary, that I was thinking of. :o

Always been a fan of Stevie...no one plays like him. He manhandled the guitar more-so than he 'played' the guitar. I've never watched anyone else play with so much control. He just makes it look so effortless...

Stevie Ray was a out of this world guitarist but Hendrix was from another Solar System. Not only that, but Hendrix invented a whole new genre of music. The greats of today are still trying to understand how Hendrix made the sounds that he did. Stevie wouldn't have covered Hendrix tunes if he didn't think a lot of him either. (What's the old saw? "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.")

I wish they both could have lived and toured together. That would have been freaking incredible.

I'm glad SRV's version of Little Wing wasn't missed in this discussion.... it's one of the dozen or so songs that consistently gives me goosebumps. In fact I'm listening to it in another tab right now and ... yep goosebumps on the arms.

I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan (I think I only have his greatest hits album), but I do appreciate his mastery of the guitar. I particularly like his song "Pride and Joy" that's some damn good blues.

<edit> Damn forgot this, the OP's cover sounds quite good (kudos on the guitar work), the sound is certainly better than average on this recording which helps! The only 'criticism' I can offer is that the fret slides sound a little off (like a little too much pressure on the strings?)... I know that's really picky; and even when I was practising I couldn't play anywhere near that level, but it's just what I heard. </edit>

i know Hendrix is a great guitar player and i have all the respect for him in the world, but there is just something about his playing that turns me off for some reason. i dont know what it is. SRV clicks for me because he is so natural somehow. Hendrix always seemed forced when compare to Stevie.

I'm not sure I can agree with this. Jimi always seemed to be having fun when he strapped his guitar on. And at the time of his playing/recording, he was sailing uncharted waters. No one that I can think of was doing what he was.
SRV was a giant fan of Jimi's. That sure showed in his playing.
They were both great! Who was the better? Who can judge that? I know who I like better, but that doesn't make him better than the other.

i wasnt necessarily talking about his decore while playing. i can see how it came off that way. i meant if i closed my eyes and couldnt see wither of them i just felt that SRV was more natural than Hendrix.

but you're right. we're talking about two incredible guitarists. and i like listening to Hendrix. i just like SRV better. but it's like saying i like cake better than cupcakes. hahaha they're both great but cake has a slight edge. and i cant believe that i just compared SRV and Hendrix to cake and cupcakes:rolleyes:.

SRV's cover of Little Wing is one of my favourite songs but I prefer what Hendrix did with the guitar to what SRV did. I must admit I have listened to a lot more Hendrix so I haven't really got an even picture to compare the two, maybe I should listen to a bit more Stevie. Any recommendations, song wise I mean?
