A QuickTime stream of Apple's iPhone 3.0 media event has been posted (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/preview-iphone-os/). The event revealed a massive list of new features for developers and end-users which we summarized in a previous post (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/17/highlights-of-apples-iphone-os-3-0-preview-copy-and-paste-a2dp-mms-much-more/).
The iPhone 3.0 software will be available to existing iPhone and iPod Touch users in the summer. Meanwhile, a beta version of the software is available to registered developers starting today.

Okay, why do these never work for me!
I have NEVER gotten one of these apple.com-hosted videos to play on my computer.
I'm using a MACBOOK PRO 10.5 with SAFARI and QUICKTIME and for some reason it just says "connecting" and never plays.
It even plays just fine on my ipod touch... but not my $2k+ computer?

@gotohamish
It allows you to run 3.0 on like 6 devices i think...
And allows you to publish preview versions of apps up to 100 test phones without the app store.

Yes it does but.......Updating devices to iPhone OS 3.0 beta software. By installing iPhone OS 3.0 beta software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently “locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to earlier versions of iPhone OS.

Quick note: Steve Jobs didn't do a lot of the SDK presentation last time. That was Scott Forestall.
Anyway, I'm wondering when the full list of 100+ features will be released for iPhone OS 3.0. I remember when Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard came out, they advertised 300+ new features, but most people only use 10 of them on a regular basis (i.e. the new 3D Dock counted as one!).
However, I'm glad that they'd brought some meaningful updates to the OS. This might make me unjailbreak my phone!
P.S. anyone know if Mail searching includes the content of an e-mail or just From, To, Subject, and All (all 3 previous options)?

Great stuff. The copy paste implementation is simple, yet full featured. Landscape keyboards everywhere, MMS, global search (please also for nicknames and notes in contacts?), apps can use bluetooth, etc.
I actually don't like the landscape keyboard except for typing stuff the auto-corrector doesn't help at all (acronyms, some urls, swear words). I'm very fast with 2 thumbs on the portrait keyboard. :p
It's interesting that the original EDGE iPhone can't do MMS (1:26 in the video). I remember trying out MMS with my old Nokia phone in 2002. It was a real pain to set up right, took way too long to transmit (failed most of the time) and was kind of expensive. the maximum picture size was pathetic, too, so I just discarded the phone's SMS settings and never used that feature again. :-)
I think the day the iPhone OS 3.0 is released for the consumer, you can actually call the iPhone a Smartphone.

Mar 17, 2009, 08:01 PM
To get the video working on the iPhone, Apple needs to post a second version of the video where you can watch the video within Safari and not have to open the quicktime application. A video opening in Safari and a video opening in Quicktime player must be two different concepts, thats probably why no one can open it on an iPhone or iPod Touch.

This isn't working for me. The little wave at the bottom just keeps going, until eventually stopping with just the Q in the background. I tried using VLC and it worked, but it skipped making it unwatchable. I tried to let it buffer, but that didn't work.
Any other ideas?

I was having troubles playing the video, but changing from UDP to HTTP delivery in the Quicktime setting seemed to fix the issue. You can change this in the Advanced tab, under "Transport Setup".

Did anyone notice the Copy/Cut/Paste implementation is different depending on the application. In safari it is tap and hold. In mail it is double tap. Couldn't tell if it is double tap in notes or not. In Messaging (SMS) it is tap and hold as well.
So we get to keep double tap to zoom, but now we need to remember how to perform the text shifting as it isn't the same for all applications.

Makes sense, no use trying to use double tap to zoom in in Safari only to have the copy-paste stuff come up.
I was wondering how that was going to work.

I kinda laughed when I saw the blood pressure monitor with the iPhone connector. It kinda creeped me out too, having Apple's technology so pervasive in our lives.

Anyone else notice the slight of hand where Scott said "the in-app store will only work for paid apps" right after saying "and you can have apps like e-book readers where people purchase books within the app." Why should an e-book reader have to be paid? That doesn't make sense. Especially when they didn't announce any other way to let us give out trial version of apps. Now if we want people to get to know our interface before purchasing anything, we have to provide two separate applications! The In-App store was supposed to solve that problem! It also had the potential to solve the problem of the lack of trial-version support. Just let us sell free trial versions and after 7 days pop up a message that asks them to purchase it from within the app! That's how it works on computers - people are used to that model. I'd say this is Apple trying to push developers away from selling free apps at all. Boo.

Can you copy and paste in Safari without selecting the predetermined blocks of text? Also, how do you change formatting of the text after pasting? Seriously why did they take that long to implement copy and paste? In that long of a time, I would've expected something more sophisticated. Same with landscape mode? They're touting them it as a new feature when it was just a UI inconsistency to begin with. The rest is cool though.

This announcement made my day for just one reason: landscape in everything! Thank the Lord! It's baffled me that landscape mode only worked in certain apps. But Mail will actually be a pleasure to use now. And finally Notes will sync! Woohoo! Yeah, I know most people will say, "It's about time," but better late than never.
I really like the execution of cut, copy and paste. They seem to have gotten it right. Being able to search across the iPhone with Spotlight is great too. With so many changes (over 100), it will be interesting to what else is different over the next few months.

ok after watching the whole sdk video.. some things that come to mind are..
1. I'm really going to be annoyed by constant pop up notifications... i hope apple does something similar to the palm pre notifications on the bottom of the screen.
2. What is so different about the original iphone that MMS isn't going to work?
3. Spotlight is cool but looks kinda messy.. i'd like app seperation a little more defined.
4. Why are they treating copy and paste and landscape mode like this gift from the gods?... they shoulda breezed by those two ..."sorry you shoulda had these along time ago, we've added c&p and landscape to everything...alright moving on!"
5. What about "Tasks, ToDos sync"?
6. Will safari cache and save multiple webpages open now instead of having to constantly reload when i reopen safari?
7. bring your own maps? is there going to be turn by turn navigation or not!?

By third party developers, but Google won't allow their maps to be used in turn by turn navigators.

In a way yes.
Would you like to be bombarded with ads and whatnot asking you to buy stuff from developers who make a free application but are looking to make a quick buck???
I thought not. This is where the model makes sense. :)
That logic doesn't make sense. If an app is annoying and doing that, the user would/could just delete the app. Besides, with the saturation of apps in every category imaginable, I would guess that it would be in a developer's best interest to make their apps as unobtrusive as possible. Besides, they currently can bombard you with ads and whatnot asking you to buy stuff, you just have to leave the app to actually do the buying. There's no reason to stop an extremely useful functionality just cause someone might make an annoying app. And there's no stopping a paid app from bombarding you with ads and whatnot. Apple isn't helping anyone by doing this.

This was a great event in many ways. But I feel the biggest part of this event was that people other than Jobs can create excitement and anticipation about a great product. I wish Jobs good health and hope that he remains the CEO for many years to come. But Jobs isn't doing all the coding for the iPhone 3.0 OS. Apple employs thousands of talented employees and when you remove an icon like Jobs from a keynote, you get people to focus back on the product again. I think it would be great for Steve to no longer do these keynotes. He steals the spotlight too many times in these events, even if he isn't trying to (ie. his appearance at WWDC 2008). Remove the icon and people realize that Apple can still come out with great products. Yes Jobs' vision and strategy are a part of that but he can't be credited for everything.

I agree, but if they think of this as a feature, limiting its use to paid apps is smart because people won't a) delete the app and b) will be less bothered by it because it will be used as they described: a way to add purchasable expansions/enhancements to a game/app.

"What about "Tasks, ToDos sync"?"
Nope. :( at least that wasn't announced today. Maybe that will be one of the 100 other features.
Agreed. I don't care if it's Apple or 3rd party, but I need to sync outlook Tasks to the phone, and the solutions so far just don't cut it (Our Outlook is not exposed to the web, and why should it be anyway). I'm syncing contacts locally, so why not Tasks? (and why not wirelessly, via bluetooth or wifi?)

ngcomo explained afterwards that this was simply a demo/proof of concept (they were supposed to put 3.0 features in). That part shouldn't be in when they release the actual game.
Do expect that kind of stuff from the likes of EA though. Think Xbox Marketplace. There will be lots of moneygrabbing at least in the beginning, but the word-of-mouth drive of the appstore should limit it somewhat.

You're apparently not aware that developpers were already able to release "paid" updates... they just chose not to.

Apple wants your money.
Oddly enough, owners of the 1st gen iPhones in the end will give Apple more money than owners of the 3G model. Remember it is in AT&T's best interest to get you on the 3G cause they don't have to share any of the service money with Apple. So if anything Apple should want the 1st gen iPhone owners to keep their phones for as long as possible.

Outlook sync works very well via wifi... I don't know how you think it's supposed to work without exposing Outlook to the web. If your company doesn't want you using outside-computers/mobile-devices to access their Exchange server then I don't see what Apple can do about it.

Looks like a great update.
1) Once Kevin Rose's beau at Apple is exposed and removed, that'll be the end of his amazing insight.
2) I thought I read that some features would NOT be available on the original iPhone (like A2DP and MMS). Or did I misunderstand?
It still will be a great update.

Well, the stream stuttered at first, but on third or forth attempt it looked pretty good. Didn't get much more out of it than looking at the pics on engadnet. Started downloading the sdk last night, it was still downloading when I went to bed. I have a 8mb cable modem but this download was extremely slow.
The getting started videos loaded very quickly and showed everything the demos did and more... they are a very good starting point.
I don't think I am going to put the beta on my iphone yet, I heard its a bit sluggish and your phone is locked into the testing software.
I would only put the beta on my phone if I could restore if there was an issue and the beta notes says that is not possible.
I ussually start development on the simulator anyway so I may wait a while and closer to summer get a touch to test the functionality of my apps.
Also the beta nda you have to click/sign doesn't let you post so much as a screen shot, further it sounds like just developing with the new sdk (even using a 2.21 framework) will prevent you from submitting to the app store.
I don't want to do that I may have an app or two I want to publish before summer.
There's a lot of buzz on the palm site about the pre still being better. I don' t own a pre but I do also have sprint so I was thinking about it until I found out it was a wm 6.1 device.
I use to develop a lot on wm platforms, it wasn't exactly hard but I couldn't describe it as fun, better I guess than toolchains and java me but still a pain. Developing with both dashcode and xcode is actually fun at times. The simulator is one of the best. Although the performance of the simulator is not always a good guage of how the app runs on the phone. Always asume the phone will be somewhat slower .
So for now the new sdk goes on one macbook pro and later a possible ipod touch and the 2.21 sdk remains on the new macbook pro I brought last month.
Curious how any other developers without more than one iphone are going to proceed with this. The temptation I know its to download it and try, But if something goes bad your without a phone for a whiile.

I thought the same thing after watching Macworld 09, but after seeing this keynote, I'm pleasantly surprised. Scott Forestall and Jos did an excellent job presenting and the reality distortion field was still there :p
But Phil Schiller....No. Scott Forestall is a much better spaker.

Agreed. EA is notoriously known on Xbox Live to charge for the most minor update. In fact, many of the downloadable pieces of content available on the Marketplace are actually ON THE DISC, and you're paying to unlock them. EA WILL nickel-and-dime us.

Okay, about Apple's long-standing tradition of posting a quicktime stream after a special event. Why do they bother? Does anyone actually get to see this video, cos this thread seems to indicate that many, if not most, cannot see it at all, at least not until days after when enough people have lost interest.
Clearly Apple do not care enough to distribute the video adequately on load-balanced servers or Akamai or whatever. They seem content to let people click on it and watch it stop and start and be entertained by all the encoding artifacts.
I would love to know why they do this with such consistency, as though they are building up as much negative publicity about the Quicktime product line as they can manage.

I think this is worth repeating here, since I was wondering why the difference existed.

in my line of work I have to have a video camera in my phone. I've been waiting for apple to do this darn implementation for 2 years now. Where is the wisdom in not allowing video recording on a the, so called, most advanced phone phone?
Might be for 2 reasons:
- The camera in the current iPhone is pretty bad, has low framerate and the CMOS sensor sweep (horizontal movement results in skewed object on picture) is very noticable. This does not live up to Apple's high standard. Maybe the next iPhone version will have a significantly better camera.
- The iPhone has little RAM so the video is stored on the Main, Flash Memory. Lifetime of that kind of flash memory is limited and recording lots of video might kill the storage hardware faster than you'd like. Usual camera phones have a different kind of internal memory and use replaceable memory cards for most of the data. The next iPhone might use a different or just improved kind of Flash memory to handle lots of write cycles that come with video recording.
I tried out most of those video recording apps and they're pretty disappointing, even on maximum settings. I'd much rather have an attachment for the 30-pin connector that has the camera and a SD card slot and is controlled and powered via the iPhone. The Canon Powershot interface would work pretty well on iPhone actually.
