@flippin360

Hey, thanks for the sample code. I incorporated some of your work with some of my own. Let me know if this gets things running for you. I had different info about Fido's MMS information, and a different approach to the tethering APN.

Cheers!

I tried it just now but the Tethering menu is not there don't know why. MMS gave an error just like mine did.. everything else works fine.

I think that Netshare has worked well for me. Certainly a cabled option would work even better.

The coverage on o2 is not that bad. Not unbelievable good, but not too bad.

So the Tethering option is there 3G data works but I can't get it to work on my computer..

Bluetooth pairs but says too many connection when I try to connect to iphone (common error on this board) and I don't get how to use USB... when I'm in System Preferences and Network I don't see iPhone in there.

Couple of questions. How will you be able to access this? Has anybody tried this yet? Are the fees extra? Why not use the other methods (from jailbreaking)?

Netshare what ?...

Pdanet is miles ahead of the competition.

Except they got greedy and charged a lot for a jailbroken app, and, did they ever get it so that the battery could charge while using it? That makes it useless for long car trips.

Bluetooth tethering only works with older BT chipsets. You will not be able to get BT working just now if you have a relatively new Mac. USB tethering works, but only if you install the 3.0 SDK on your computer.

this would be nice. On top of my iPhone plan, I'm paying an extra $70 a month for Verizon Wireless mobile broadband for work.

I only use it for email, Windows Remote Desktop and SSH, so the 5GB a month that Verizon charges me is total overkill. I've never even come close to exceeding 1GB in a month.

What it/s "sms_validity_period"?
What number is for my orange_pl?

nitemorph
Mar 20, 2009, 09:05 AM
Something I noticed on Orange.ro after hacking the ipcc and messing around with MMS is that the images taken by the iPhone camera cannot be sent as MMS, but smaller ones are ok (eg: some pic saved from Safari).

IMO, the MMS app does not resize the iPhone camera images which are rather large (~600KB) which makes the MMS probably be rejected by the operator.

I have gotten tethering to work on AT&T to work and Safari still works on the iPhone. But MMS does not show up in messaging anymore, though. Just use the AT&T ipcc that is on page 10 or 11 of this thread and put it on your iPhone. Oh yeah, you can tether on Windows. But I have not gotten it to work on Windows using usb. Okay Im back (the guy who wrote the first IPCC)

MMS won't work as carriers have been told by apple the iphone doesnt support MMS, they have disabled it. You can ring them and ask for it to be enabled by this has had mixed results

Thethering will only work if you have iphone SDK installed as it patches both itunes and the system so that tethering can work correctly.

Hi Guys,

I finally made it to get MMS and Tethering activated on O2 Germany (my o2_Germany.ipcc --> Attachement).

Sending and recieving MMS works great.
In my Settings Screen I see the Tethering Option and I can activate it. But I didn't managed to connect my PC (I have Vista... shame on me!) with the iPhone. Neither with USB nor with Bluetooth.

I even can't connect my PC with Bluetooth to the iPhone. They are just not finding each other...

Someone has an Idea?

Does anyone mind uploading/sending me this package?

Got mms working with rogers. After you load .ipcc file, restart phone, go to settings, General, network, Cellular Data Network, apn is internet.com, username is media, password is mda01. change .zip to .ipcc. I have sent a few pics to myself. I send the pic and exit messages and about a minute or so later i get a red dot on my messages and there is the mms.

[This one seems to work really well on Rogers. Contact sent by mms go fairly quickly. Pics seem to send quicker than previous attempts. Download file.
If it downloads as a zip, rename to Rogers_ca.ipcc. If it downloads as Payload or Payload 1,2 or 3 , rename to Payload, Compress and then get info and rename to Rogers_ca.ipcc, then shift or option check for updates, restart iphone, and mms.

There are different Firmware - Versions for each device (iPhone, iPhone 3 G, misc. iPods).

Re-check the firmware you downloaded, it must match your device

The problems are, you have to manually change the APN (in the phone) from MMS to INTERNET depending on what you need! Oh, and btw, YOU MUST RESTART after you update carrier settings, I bet you didn't! (Neither did I and that's why it didn't work)
The teethering is only working on mac if you have the SDK installed (it patches itunes). This is what I heared, i didn't try yet!

Here is a link to download it! http://files.me.com/teodor/yc38zn

Sorry guys, I was out for the weekend and did not figure out how to post files from the iPhone :).. I've attached the ipcc I used. Basically, as neodoru is saying, you need to also use the mms APN but you can in fact use 2 APNs, one for phone internet (first one in the dictionary) and the second one with type-mask -2 for MMS. I don't know if tethering still works, I would guess not, let me know how it goes for you.

@nitemorph : thank you; using your ipcc, i can use mms, but tether doesn't work . right now i have 2 ipcc's one with mms working and one with tethering. some people reported that they can use both mms and tether (changing the apn from internet to mms depending on what they need) .

Your solution is way better! :) They work in the same time, i guess tethering is out, but I hope I will not need it 'till apple gives us an official solution!

Hi everyone,:)

I've read most of your threads and got to know a lot:D. Very useful information indeed. I'd like to as if any of you guys can give me some hints or advice or any kind of helpful hand, so i here i go. Have the iPhone 3.0 Beta, signed up with a developer,it's official. I need to sort out the tethering and MMS not working issue. I've found the iPhoneTether app created the orange_sk.ipcc installed it via iTunes, restarted. No response. Maybe it's because i don't have the SDK installed, do i have to? Probably a redundant question, but I'm really new to this part of the iphone world. Well, that's that, from that point on my hands are tied. I've read a couple of forums and articles about it, but since Steve Troughton-Smith's sttumble upon the tethering most of the time there were rumors. Sorry for this long post:o. I just need help with the .ipcc to enable MMS and tethering. Thank you very much:).

if you get a Payload folder instead of the zip, make sure it is named Payload and then compress it and rename to Rogers_ca.ipcc. Has been working well for me. I did find a problem with visual voicemail after tethering, but the mms works flawlessly.

I'm hoping they're overcome with a newfound and overwhelming feeling of generosity.

Haha that's funny. Right... They'd be stupid to miss out on the opportunity of this large market share. Yes, I think it's stupid to charge more on top of that to tether. It's not like I'd use that much more internet.

My mms was working great , then i tried the tethering and it crewed up my voicemail. I reset my phone and now i can't get the mms working. When i figure it out i'll post it . Originally once you load the file and restarted the phone the mms would work.

NO, the phone did not send mms messages after the restart...I also checked the APN settings. internet.com, wapuser1, wap....I have tried that as well as media.com, media, mda01, and internet.com, media, mda01

Do you think you can figure this out????

I think i must be getting flagged at rogers, because i get an ipcc working perfectly and then after about 10 or 12 pics it stops working. I then get another ipcc working with different settings and same thing. I have had mms working on several different ipcc with different settings, but eventually they all stop working. The one that worked the best was ip 208.200.067.150, port 8080, internet.com, wapuser1, -2, wap. Contacts and pics sent and received fairly quickly.

Where do you put the ip address and port in the apn settings? And is that wapuser1 or wapuser-2

So this is actually some very good news. I suspected that this would come as obviously the carriers are looking for more ways to make more money. However, I will agree with others who say that charging an extra $30 just because we tether even if we don't go over certain caps is just plain silly. I mean I barely use 1GB right now without tethering and even with tethering there are very few times I am some place with my notebook that I do not have free wifi anyhow. But during those times, it would be be nice to tether. As long as I didn't go over any caps that are already on my account I don't see what the issue is.

But the more money the better for them.

I have Netshare and it works great. As long as Apple does not block it somehow, I will not pay a dime to get tethering. The data service is high enough as it is, why should we pay more? In Australia, I have heard that their 3G services are government funded and are 15 times faster than anything we have as far as any internet service. Hooray for socialism.

Give Barry a couple years, we're getting there... :)

Upon further inspection... it seems that no matter what it's one or the other. If the apn is set to the fido-core-appl1.apn then mms will not work.

However if it's changed to internet.fido.ca then Visual Voice Mail will not work

I tried adding them both as well, seems like it won't work either. If you can think of something. I'll try it.

Tethering will be a great option. I travel alot and stay in hotels. I gravitate towards the ones with free internet but still shell out ten to fifteen bucks a day for internet quite often. Depending on how it is priced it will e right for some and not right for others. But, overall, a great plus for the iPhone.

Edited: Which would be really good because I just updated to 3.0 Beta 3 and it seems I can't change the settings under cellular data... so it's one or the other....

okay good. I thought I was the only one. I upgraded to 3.0b3 and trying to get to the network settings just crashes the settings app. tethering works and MMS doesn't seem to using this file:

We are paying for 'unlimited' data. AT&T let us do what we will with what we are paying for!

It would be such an impressive move you'll sell even more.

Tethering will be a great option. I travel alot and stay in hotels. I gravitate towards the ones with free internet but still shell out ten to fifteen bucks a day for internet quite often. Depending on how it is priced it will e right for some and not right for others. But, overall, a great plus for the iPhone.

I'd say in my experience Hotel wifi works about 50% of the time or less.

If you upload my fido one to your phone it has tethering and mms and it works.

Edit:
Oh, but to check your voicemail you need to go to your dial pad and press and hold 1 visual voice mail won't work with mms for now. Still working on that solution.

Hi all,

I have b4 on a 3G phone with ATT, i've edited the IPCC file to allow tethering, but voicemails stop showing up (ones that are there work fine).

I have seen posts where it appears that there is a conflict between APN for MMS and voicemail. i dont miss MSS but do miss my voicemail.

is there any solution that allows tethering and voicemail to work on ATT?

thanks,
-graham

Thank you very much and Visual voicemail works also. I have a question. I was told on another board that a Boolean is required to be inputed in the ipcc to enable apn editing for each settings, tethering, MMS, data. Do you think you are able to put that in? I would but I do not have a Mac. Something like APNUserEditable

Well, another day that I'm sitting in a hotel paying for internet. I have my iPhone sitting next to my computer. I just wish I could tether. I know there will be a monthly fee but assuming it's in the $30 range it is completely worth it to me.

Apparently you have to put in the following above every <key>apn</key>

<key>IsAPNUserEditable</key>
<true/>

I'm on Fido network here in Canada and I modified the O2 UK carrier bundle that was posted here. So the tethering menu shows up but when I click on it it says "To enable tethering on this account, contact fido"

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/5896/img0159.png

3G works in Safari and other programs, MMS shows up in text messaging but gives an error when I try to send it. I attached the bundle I used if anyone can fix it up.

Edit:
DarlokDC, I don't mind testing it because if it does not work I'll just use mine again since it works for everything else like data, text and making calls.

Hey there, I'm also located in Canada but on the rogers plan. However, the steps needed to make the .ipcc file work is UNIVERSAL.
Here is fido's and roger's .ipcc files. I've only tested the rogers one myself but I'm confident the fido one shall work as well.
Note: I've also enabled the ability for you guys to edit your APN settings through the iphone by going Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network. Just in case any problem occur. :apple:

I have an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 3GS (3.1.3) from T-Mobile Germany (5.0). I am able to edit APN and MMS settings via the "Cellular Data Network" tab but not able to access the Visual Voicemail settings.

Does anyone know how I can gain access to these settings or tell me which params in the carrier.plist file can be edited for customization ?

cheers,
jzone

If you take the carrier.plist file and change it to carrier.zip and then extract it, you can change the files. When finished, zip it AGAIN and change the extension to .plist.

Least that's what I can remember... rogers got smarter and let me tether without additional fee's so im tethering without any hacks.
