I'm getting a macbook next week, was going to buy the aluminium DDR3 2ghz model, but now see there is not much difference in specs with the white macbook
The only differences that I can see are:
DDR2 vs DDR3 (doe this really make a performance difference?)
40gig larger HD
What else is there?
Suddenly it doesn't seem worthwhile to go for the alum one.

you get alum. body and LED back lit screen. also it is thinner and lighter
if those things dont matter to you then i would say the white is the better deal

Main differences are the LED backlit screen and Aluminum body.
Differences include:
Option of a 2.4GHz
DDR3 memory instead of DDR2
Bigger HDD (160 or 250 over 120)
Battery life on the Aluminum is slightly better (5 hours vs. 4.5)
The white is slightly thicker (1.08 x 12.78 x 8.92 vs 0.95 x 12.78 x 8.94) and a bit heavier (5lbs vs 4.5)
White has firewire.
If money isn't an issue, go for the best you can afford but if you want a great computer for the money the White MacBook is a great choice.

Just for a reminder, FireWire 400 only maxed at 400MBPS of data transfer but USB 2.0 have a rate of 420MBPS.
If you are not using your Mac for video editing, then you shouldn't be much problem getting the aluminum model.
Besides, the aluminum model has more elegant feel than white plastic model.

USB2 officially has a data rate of 480Mbit/s, but no single device can have a sustained throughput of more than 320.
FW400 is actually about 25% faster in practice.

The aluminum MB is a great machine :) unless you want to do HDV video editing (mini-DV) format.... then it is completely worthless. I can't figure out what Apple was thinking by removing the Firewire.

the aluminum one doesn't get as dirty looking, either.

On top of that, in real world use you'll be lucky to ever see 200mbps over USB 2.0 (25MB per second)
