I own a "workhorse" Apple LaserWriter 4/600 PS bought in 1996. I have manual but have lost software. My son has a Macbook Pro. Will the printer be compatible w/ macbook pro? (I'm assuming it will). How can I get missing printer software he needs to load on his macpro in order to use the printer? Anything else I need to get him for this all to work? He's in college and going through his grandparents ink! Me, my son, and grandparents all on fixed incomes so cheapest solutions most welcome.

Will the printer be compatible w/ macbook pro? ...The LaserWriter 4/600 is a PostScript Level 2 printer. This removes software compatibility as an issue. The issue is that it does not have an Ethernet port. You may try to use an external print server that features a Centronics parallel port. If that does not work, then you will need a bridge to the LocalTalk port.
