Transferring music back to itunes advice please.

Hi.
I transferred all my mp3s to an folder on an external HD when I installed a new HD in my Macbook. I still wish to keep my tunes on the external rather than re import them to the Mac to keep the space free, but would obviously like to see the track listings in itunes.
I have changed the location of my itunes folder on the Mac to the folder on the external, and tried hitting the 'consolidate library' tab, but nothing happened.
What do I have to do?
