Hey Everyone
I just purchased a new iMac 24" 2009 Model.

I also got a Wireless Mighty Mouse & Wireless keyboard.

I have owned the system for 6 days and each day the Mighty Mouse and keyboard will lose connection and require me to hold the power button down on the imac to restart the system.

I called apple and was told to do a "Option Command R P" Reset.
This did not fix the problem... I then called them again and was told to format the system.. This did not fix the problem.. I replaced the batteries, turned bluetooth off on any near by devices changed my 802.11 freq to a different channel.

Still drops out each day...

Ideas? Feedback? Same problem?

P.S
It seems from information collected from other forums that this is effecting mainly the new alum 2009 imac...I am starting to think this is now hardware.

Also something I noticed.. Brand new FRESH Energizer Ultimate Batteries $25. I put them into the mighty mouse. 1 day later iStat reports the mouse is at 73%!! thats a big drop in 1 day

Yeah. I got my 24" iMac on the 12th and bought them from the Apple online store with the wired keyboard and mouse because i didn't want to wait 1-3 days for it to ship. Well, i bought a wireless Mighty Mouse and i have the same problem sometimes. I have a Logitech Revolution wireless mouse (USB jump drive type plugin) and when my Mighty Mouse freezes i use the Logitech mouse to go to Bluetooth on my menu bar and disconnect/reconnect my Mighty Mouse. It does it a few times a day. Not a major problem, but it's a pain. Hopefully there's a fix for this soon.

We're having the same problem too with the keyboard and mouse losing connection a few times each day, it's really annoying. Even more annoying is that we can't connect our wireless wacom tablet. It worked without a glitch on the MacBook Pro so it's definitely an iMac problem.

Thinking if we should send the iMac back or just the keyboard and mouse, really frustrating when you choose wireless but then feel like you should just go back to wired to save the hassle!

Just called Apple... There doing a DOA for me.. YAY.. I did say I think I want to change back to wired.. But the guy was like this problem is a one off problem with your current iMac you should be fine with your new one..

So im staying wireless lol

This isn't going to help anyone, but what the heck here goes anyway. I have tried all the tricks I have seen mentioned here and more that were not. I have a 2007 aluminum iMac and I absolutely love it. I purchased a wireless Mighty Mouse at my local Future Shop. I brought it home, put new alkaline batteries in it (2) and fired 'er up. Did not like the tracking so I got a Logitech cordless and tried that. Worked great with the LCC so I used it, but every time I looked at that ugly mouse sitting in fron of my beautiful iMac I cringed. After discovering SteerMouse, I reinstalled my wireless Mighty Mouse about 3 weeeks ago, and it worked great! Awesome! Until about two weeks ago.
Then, without warning the mouse would not track. Click worked OK and scroll, but no tracking. Argggh. Back to the Logitech. Nothing I have tried has worked, and I've tried everything. Bottom line: I have come to the conclusion that the problem could be with the Apple implementation of Bluetooth. I'm hoping either 10.5.7 or 10.6.0 will fix the issue. My Logitech mouse still looks like a sick dolphin.

I'm relatively new to Macs so bear with me. What exactly is that command? Can I do it? If I can, how? I'd love to get my WMM working.

Thanks,

Hey Everyone
.. Brand new FRESH Energizer Ultimate Batteries $25.

Don't waste your money on "Ultimate" lithium batteries. These are designed for quick, high discharge use (think of a camera flash). As such, they're not really optimized for steady, low-draw use (like a wireless mouse).

It's much cheaper to use alkaline batteries for this application...and they will probably even last longer than the lithium variety. In fact, in terms of $$ per year, you're actually better off using el-cheapo batteries (think Ray-o-Vac). This will give you 85% of the battery lifetime of Energizer alkaline, for about 1/3 of the price.

(By the way, I know what I'm talking about. I am a battery engineer with a Ph.D. in ElectroChemical Engineering)

I would love to have a line like that. And you didn't even sound like an A$$, just informative. :D Good to know. Thanks much.

And if you had anything to do with the new NIMH Slow discharge rechargeables such as eneloops by sanyo, thanks for that too. My digital SLR loves them.

Actually, mine seems to be doing a lot better now. One freeze up per day, if that. The wireless keyboard has been perfect and the mouse isn't nearly as bad. I've downloaded some updates.. they were all iLife though so i doubt it effected Bluetooth.

Got a Wireless mouse and keyboard a few days ago and had 3 freeze ups in the last couple of days. What's the consensus? Can it be fixed through an update? Only had the iMac just over a week and this is putting a right dampener on things.

And
Apr 6, 2009, 05:16 AM
Just to add my voice... I'm having the same problems with a wireless MM and a mac mini. At first I thought the computer was freezing up, but no, it's just the mouse is dropped for some reason... arg. Sometimes pressing the power button to go to sleep and waking up again solves it, but sometimes a restart is necessary. As someone returning to macs after 10 years I was hoping OS niggles like this were a thing of the past. It seems not... :-(

Hi guys,

Ditto for me too. Bought the 09 Imac with the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Surprisingly I have no problem with the keyboard. The mouse is entirely another story. It keeps losing connection at least twice a day.

Called the hotline but same ****** adivce, reinstall, update software, restart and monitor the situation...blah blah blah... None of the tech support can offer a solution.

googled around and found t hat this particular problem is widespread and has something to do with the bluetooth firmware in the imac.

Well, at the moment, if the mouse loses connection, i just shut it down and wait for the connection lost message that appears on the imac, then turn it on again. It works well for me. I hope the problem does not morph into something else ...sigh....

Really thinking about abandoning the wireless setup.

My 2 cents worth is it the mouse or iMac ?

And
Apr 8, 2009, 09:53 AM
It seems to me this problem is to do with the OS. I found that if I have a second mouse connected and the mouse connection drops I use the other (wired) mouse to connect to the bluetooth and go to connect mouse and it starts working straight away... It's not really ideal having an additional mouse connected though. Does anyone know if there is a keyboard shortcut that could somehow get the OS to scan for blutooth things and re-establish connection with the mouse?

A.

In my point of view, this is a wifi/BT interference!
I have the exact same problem with my MBP unibody, when you have a lot of traffic going on, like backing up with timemachine, the mouse start's to get very jerky until it looses connection.

FWIW, I just had the same problem this morning. However, not with an iMac but a new 2009 mac mini.

The keyboard and mouse worked perfectly fine for months with a previous-generation C2D mac mini. I'm betting it's a software/firmware issue with whatever new bluetooth chipset is being used on these new systems.

I was able to get things going again by hitting the power button to put the mini to sleep, then I disconnected my iPhone (which happened to be connected) to cajole it into awakening again. After a bit, the keyboard and mouse reconnected and all was fine.

I am very sorry to hear that so many people seem to have problems with the wireless mouse and keyboard. I feel very sorry for you all but mostly I feel very sorry for myself, for I have ordered an iMac 24" including wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately I only read these posts after I had ordered, otherwise I probably would have ordered cable connections instead. I wonder if all or a high percentage of users have this problem with the new iMacs, or is it just the odd one. (judging by this and other similar posts on this forum, it certainly looks like a lot of people have this problem) It also really surprises me that Apple is not responding, surely they must be aware that such a problem exists with so many calls to the service centrers. I am new to Apple, so do not know how they operate, but if it is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, meaning that if this problem is only known to employees of Apple in the lower echelons of the company and not higher up, then maybe nothing will happen to change the situation. If this problem happens to me with my new iMac which is due to be delivered, and now knowing that this problem exists and no real help seem to be forthcoming from the service department, I would be inclined to make a real fuss by bombarding the management of Apple with emails, complaining about this issue until such time as it is resolved. One pays a premium price for a high quality product and can then rightly expect to get a product that works without problems, and no buts about it. Perhaps you people with this problem should all consider doing just that. Apple will be well advised to listen to you, the customers, they cannot afford in these times to lose current or prospective customers, and issues such as these could quickly tarnish their good name.

Same problem here, new iMac had it 3 or 4 days and the mouse has just 'lost' connection with the IMac 2 or 3 times.
Fixed it by plugging in an (irony alert) Microsoft mouse, disconnecting and reconnecting the bluetooth connection for the so-called mighty mouse. Switching the mouse off and on didn't work so next time I might try taking the batteries out to do a complete mouse 'reset' but self evidently its a software problem in either the iMac or the mouse.

I have had a case open about the Bluetooth problems with the Mighty Mouse with Apple since I received my iMac 2009 about 2 weeks ago. I went through the same steps as others on this board, (PRAM, Batteries, turning the mouse on and off, etc..) and none of that worked for me. So Apple decided it was a mouse problem then sent me a replacement wireless Mighty Mouse.

The new mouse did not solve the problem... Seems like if I use the computer for an extended period of time - like over an hour - the MM will lose connectivity and I have to use my 10 year old USB Microsoft mouse to disconnect the MM and reconnect to get the MM working again.

So I called Apple back again and they acknowleged the problem is with the new crop of iMacs and believe it to be a firmware issue. At first they were going to replace my computer then after they talked to engineering, they decided I should wait for a firmware upgrade and check the software updates frequently.

I love my new iMac which is my first Apple, but this is an annoyance I hope Apple fixes soon...

...does this issue only happen on :apple: MM's?

I have a Logitech BT V470 that works great with my eeePC and I'm going to setup my iMac this coming weekend as time permits (it is a previous gen though)...

It seems the MM's have lots of problems (connectivity, keeping the scroll ball clean, etc...) are they worth using long term?

As far as i know, only Mighty Mouse. All i've read anyway. Not many seem to be having a problem with the wireless keyboard even. I know my keyboard has been fine since i got it 3 weeks ago or so. Mighty Mouse has been a problem since day one. It doesn't seem to be losing connectivity anymore but it does seem to skip all over the screen randomly. Sometimes even when i have it laying down on my desk, the cursor will randomly start moving all over... blah.

I agree with you as I had the same problem on my old PowerMac G5. After turning off the wifi and use only the ethernet port, the mouse seems to be fine again. I am thinking it's some major interference because it get worse when there is a lot of wireless traffic.

WOT! WOT!
Looks like 10.5.7 might fix this problem!

AppleInsider claims:
Mac OS X 10.5.7 to improve Bluetooth compatibility, stability

Although it appeared that Apple was close to wrapping up development of Mac OS X 10.5.7 late last week, a new pre-release distribution of the software was dropped on developers Wednesday afternoon with a handful of additional tweaks added to mix.

Most notably, Apple has included a new round of "Bluetooth compatibility and stability fixes" in the latest beta, labeled Mac OS X 10.5.7 build 9J56, according to people familiar with the software.

A number of recent Mac mini purchasers have complained about intermittent Bluetooth connection problems (1, 2) on their new systems, though similar problems are believed to be plaguing a variety of Macs, with one AppleInsider forum member recently noting that the issue extends back to his first-generation 13-inch MacBook.

Another fix in the latest build targets an issue with Personal File Sharing and AFP volumes not being properly recognized as Time Machine shares. However, the other three fixes were relatively minor, two of which add once-missing descriptive information to certain crash logs.

In total, Mac OS X 10.5.7 stands to deliver over 110 individual code-corrections spanning more than two dozen areas of the system. Earlier this month, Apple added Help Viewer to the list of key software components where beta testers should focus their testing efforts.

Though its believed that Mac OS X 10.5.7 remains close to release, Apple still notes that the software is incompatible with the public beta of Safari 4 -- the OS update's lone known issue.

I came here since my wireless keyboard suffers from very similar symptoms... Connection issues etc. I'm on a Unibody MacBook Pro btw and now I got another thing to "wait for".

Now Apple better get that update through the door darn quick since I'm also waiting for the supposedly new graphics drivers and more. 10.5.6 is bugs galore imho. Everything seems to get moved to the 10.5.7 update these days and it keeps getting pushed forward forever. I hope this isn't an upcoming trend of Apple to only release point updates and no quick fixes... If any issues appear then we'll always have to wait for the next "Service Pack".

Sorry for ranting but I payed premium for a mac then I darn well expect to get premium as well.

There is no guarantee that 10.5.7 will fix the Bluetooth issues people are experiencing. Someone has made that assumption, and we all hope that assumption is correct, but Apple has never officially admitted there even is a problem. Worse than that, it could actually be a combination of bad mice (mouses?) and software/firmware. Ya follow? Keep your fingers crossed....

today I got my very first bluetooth mouse, and its also my first laser mouse (V470 I think its called, its a small logitech I was recommended on this site).

So I hook it up and everything seems fine. Then I try and open VLC to watch some lost episodes. When VLC is open I hit "file" and "open new file" or whatever it says. So the window pop's up and I navigate to my Video folder. In here a have a few files so I use the scroll wheel to scroll down to Lost. Here I realize that something is wrong.

I get to scroll once, and after one scroll I can't scroll again and I can't click anything on the screen (neither right or left clicks). To get this away I hit the arrow button on the keyboard and I can use the mouse just fine again... Until I try to scroll again.

This never happened with my old optical mouse so its pretty weird. I tried rebooting. If I go into the very same video folder via Finder I don't get no problems. iTunes, websites and whatever else that lets you scroll also works fine, so it seems it's just when I browse for a file in VLC and some other plaves I dont remember when I had to browse a folder to open a file. Why do I have this glitch and is it related to the problems yall are having with bluetooth?

I've had the same problem with my iMac replacement. I was on the phone with tech support and it was finally determined that it is losing the connection with the wireless mouse. It works with the USB mouse. So, temporarily the USB mouse is plugged in in case the wireless loses connection. (It would go to items but couldn't open them). I spoke with a product specialist who sent me a program which will capture what is happening when the mouse loses connection. They are working on the issue and a new mouse or computer will NOT help. By the way, I paired the same mouse with my old mac and it works fine.

Did you install Logitech Control Center for Mac? If not, you should, then try it.

had a minor irritation over this with BT MM on the 2007 alu. when browsing BT phone, the mouse would be unusably jittery. I got into the habit of flipping the mouse over, switch off on battery cover, let connection lost, and then turn on. after a few clicks, it re-connects perfectly, even with continuing to browse the phone!

must be BT inteference, with flaky performance on the host. hope 10.5.7 fixes it, and I'll have options rather than the gamer mouse I use all the time now. (Razer deathadder ;))

Sorry, it was pre-release until today. Still interested to know if this solves the issue with bluetooth device connectivity.

If the latest os X 10.5.7 update does not resolve the bluetooth issue, then perhaps it is another 'nvidia' issue in the new imac. Perhaps there is an inherent error in the design of the bluetooth chip???

Anyways, just trying to vent my anger. Such an expensive mouse and keyboard. In the end, does not function as it should. Tech support absolutely no use for this.

Going to update the OS X tonight. Hopefully, test it out for a couple of days and cross my fingers.

Small update on my part. I bought my Wireless Mighty Mouse online and it shipped today.. i should be able to report back on my iMac within a few days. (i hope) Anyone that previously had problems try 10.5.7 and find any difference in bluetooth connectivity? It's weird because, like i said before, my bluetooth/wireless Apple keyboard has never given me a single problem. Mighty Mouse only.

I got my iMac with a wireless keyboard and wireless mighty mouse - the mouse worked fine, but the keyboard when in & out of bluetooth, so I went to MicroCenter and purchased a wired keyboard with the numeric pad. All in All, even though the apple numeric keyboard is not wireless, I like it a ton better. I had bluetooth issues, and I personally think the wireless keyboard is way too small anyways. I now only use it for when I hook-up my MacBook to an external display.

I wouldn't mind a wireless Apple Numeric Keyboard...with no bluetooth complications of course!!!

I was able to update to 10.5.7 two days ago here in Germany. I have had problems with the mouse losing connection to bluetooth since I got my new iMac about a month ago. I loose contact approx. once every second day. Since installing the update I have had no issues. So far the mouse did not loose connection but I am not sure if this means anything. I think it is far to early to tell. Looking at the fixes though that this update is supposed to fix, I see no mention of the bluetooth problem in the update notes, so it looks to me as if it was not even adressed. Lets hope that I am wrong and the issue was adressed.

I have a 2009 mac pro and was getting the freezing issue with bluetooth i.e mouse stopped responding.
only way to fix it was putting computer to sleep then wake up.
i have not had one issue since i updated to 10.5.7
since i updated 2 days ago, computer has not been off and i have had no problems at all with bluetooth keyboard or mouse

This is WAY early on my part, as I've only been testing a few hours, but i see NO lagging, skipping, freezing on my new Mighty Mouse. I did read somewhere that 10.5.7 fixes "bluetooth connectivity" issues, so hopefully this is fixed 100%. I'm going to continue to test another few days before i report back after now though.

Hey Everyone

Since the 10.5.7 update on Thursday everything is running really well. No drop outs related to the previous problems *Touch wood

The only problem that I have had which is caused by the time capsule I just bought is when a large backup of data is happening my bluetooth keyboard will display that its dropped but still works fine.. LOL I can live with that!

So hopefully all goes well and this continues to work fine! and work like the product i thought I was buying in the first place..

Keep us updated ppl

Yes 10.5.7 didn't fix this head ache with the bluetooth MM.

Its not just the Imacs. I just bought a wireless MM for my MB and the thing will stop responding after like an hour or so, out of nowhere. I have to use my trackpad to disconnect and re-connect the damn thing on the bluetooth menu bar. It has happened already twice since the 1st day of purchase, starting to piss me too.

It's not the computers bluetooth either cuz i have a logitech BT mouse that never disconnected on me like that.

mine never froze or lost connection. is that you guys problem? my problem is that when I turn off the mouse and turn it on again (after booting up the mac or just when I turn it off when watching a movie etc to save battery) then it won't connect. so I'll have to use my ipod as a mouse and navigate to the bluetooth icon on the top of the screen and then search for a new mouse and pair the **************** again. doesn't happen a lot but it happens too often still

When I had the MM, I would be using it for like an hour or so and then all of a sudden it wouldn't track anymore or be functional. What I did was I disconnected and reconnected it using my trackpad and it would for again. Got annoyed by that and so therefore returned it and kept on using my other BT mouse.

I called them back in March when I first received the iMac and spoke to product specialist after escalating the issue. In the end, they said to wait for a firmware/software update to fix the problem with the mighty mouse and the iMac. I recently updated to 10.5.7 and the issue persists. I am back on the phone with Apple now and will see what happens. They did replace the mouse once when I first called in March, but that solved nothing...

I love my iMac, but hope Apple corrects this issue. They are hearing my voice...

My late 08 had the same issues. I finally threw in the towel and went wired for the mouse but soldiered on w/the keyboard. Tried 2 BT keyboards - both the original white BT and truncated shortie alu model and had it drop out every 2 days or so. Would drive me crackers because the kids/missus would be calling me up while I was golfing etc to try and fix it (normally a restart).

10.5.7 does seem to have fixed it for me.

I just bought an 09 Mac Mini, hoping to be able to use it with my 50" plasma as a monitor. Unfortunately I can't get myGearhead bluetooh keyboard and mouse installed on the mini. I have tried several times with the same result. The mini finds the signal but will not finalize the pairing part of the installation. I thought the mouse and keyboard may have been faulty so I tried installing them on my Macbook G4 and they worked perfectly right away. I was thinking of trying a different brand of keyboard and mouse, but based on all the feed back here and on other forums it seems I may need to get in touch with Apple and have them do some troubleshooting.

I'm still having problems - is everyone else? In my case, my wireless MM freezes about once every hour or two. I don't get the "Lost Connection" message, it just stops responding. I then use my trackpad to toggle the "Discoverable" option in my Bluetooth settings and it comes back.

It's pretty frustrating. I also have an Apple bluetooth keyboard and I never have a connection problem with that.

I'm not sure when it started happening exactly, but it was definitely in 10.5.6 and of course still exists in 10.5.7.

I think it's 10.5.7 that CREATED the issue for us.

Same here. Since 10.5.7, I occasionally lose my both MM/white BT keyboard. Usually turning Bluetooth off/on from the menu fixes the problem, which is a minor pain, but once in a while I have to restart. That greatly aggravates the tuchus.

I have updated the OS x to 10.5.7 and both the wireless keyboard nad mouse appears to be working fine. There is the occasional drop in connection about once in 2 weeks but other than that, no more problems. Strange. It appears that the OS update solved the problem for some but not for others. However, instead of turning on and off the bluetooth from the menu bar, i just have to turn the keyboard or mouse on and off once. The bluetooth auto detect and reconnect immediately.

I really hope that Apple can finally issue an update to solve all the issues regarding the stupid bluetooth. It has been bugging the users for YEARS. Makes me really wonder if it is hardware inherent like the nvidia issue and all this software updates are to mask the problem??

For anyone still having this issue, here's what I did to FIX it permanently for me.

In System Prefs, go to Network. In the sidebar of available network devices, highlight and REMOVE "Bluetooth".

Reboot and you're good to go. There's something with Bluetooth available as a network device that causes the dropout of devices (mice, headsets, keyboards).

I did this AGES ago and haven't had a problem since.

EDIT: Well, that didn't work. I still lose BT for both KB and MM every couple of hours. I have found that toggling "Discoverable" under the BT main menu icon seems to wake things up.

Losing my keyboard every few weeks was driving me crazy. Could re-pair it up.
I found that it had been paired with my other Macbook 25 feet away. As soon as I deleted it from that machine - it paired automatically to mine. Might not be everyone's issue - but it corrected mine. Good luck!

The suggestions here are the best. Have you tried any of them yet? You don't say.

You also don't mention, so I'm not sure if you've paired your keyboard and mouse with any other Mac, iPhone or iPad devices? If you have make sure to have only one paired, or one device on at a time.

The biggest thing that worked for me, as already suggested - remove bluetooth within system preferences as one of your network connection options. That seemed to have done the trick for me 1 1/2 years ago with my 27" iMac.

cheers.

I have tried all that has been suggested with no luck, the keyboard is only dropping occasionally the mouse is every few seconds, I am having to use my bamboo to use between the dropouts. Its getting very annoying now. I don't want to use my wireless logitec keyboard and mouse but if I don't cure the problem then I will have to. The mouse isn't recognized at boot stage to log in I have to use my bamboo as the mouse.
