Only 12 default smilies? Booooring!!
I'd like to see an expanded set :)
It would be quite easy to do with vBulletin:

No thanks. We have enough already.
We don't want to become overrun by the little buggers...

To be honest, I'd like to see less.

I too think we have more than enough of them...

I'd love to have those large high-resolution shiny ones. These would be perfect and should be implemented immediately.

Unfortunately we don't have a good one for 'irony'

I doubt we need anymore. This isn't AOL.

I think those are tacky. I'd like something similar to what we already have, but with just a couple more useful ones.

Nope... don't need them
Rarely use them, except this one
Seems appropriate here

sometimes you get into the situation when a smiley is not 100% representative. In that case I generally dont use a smiley. But a couple more will be a good thing...

But out of interest, in what way do you feel the current twelve are lacking – what are the 'emotions' (for want of a better word) that you want to convey that aren't currently represented?

NO. One of the best features of MR is its clean and uncluttered look. As a matter of fact, I say reduce the count to 8.

I'd really like a smiley for the :-/ face, or a maybe a :-S face. I would also like to be able to have a heart <3 symbol to use.
I guess these ones aren't that important, but I wouldn't mind being able to use them when the need arises (if they existed).

There is a :-S -
I like the smileys fine as they are. We've got the all important  Not to be cynical, but if we had hearts we'd be overrun with <3 :apple: everywhere

Not 8, but 9, so it's all symmetrical. :)

The :apple: should be the first to go!!1! :apple::apple::apple:
The remaining to be removed should certainly be the  and , leaving only those smilies that aren't angry or rude, two emotions which should be far more difficult to express.
And while we're at it, please reduce the number of font sizes to two: regular, and small.

Couldn't agree more. Those two smilies in particular have the capacity to create trouble and I'm careful about using those two. I've never liked the Apple logo, never saw the point.
But having the capacity to do large text sometimes is nice and also useful (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=6985867&postcount=1). Maybe it should be restricted to those who deserve the privilege, like demis. ;)

a smile face for irony would be good, and maybe one for mild shock in addition to the big eyed one
how about one for empathy?
there are others i can't think of but choice is always a good thing

The ban hamster was edesignuk's fave here on MR. I can't steal his material, no matter how prevalent it is elsewhere. The MR Inquisition is a classic and although we certainly count fear, surprise and ruthless efficiency... and an almost fanatical devotion to Arn amongst our weapons, we do not yet have nice red uniforms... or uniforms of any colour, for that matter.
However, I'm trying to persuade the powers that be to implement...
The Comfy Chair.

When the :apple: icon showed up, it was because Apple put the logo before everything in their marketing. :apple:TV, :apple:iPhone and so forth.
But Apple has since abandoned this practice, and the :apple:TV is the only one using that now. But we can just call 'em AppleTV like everyone else.
So with all that said, I agree with you, the :apple: smilie should be the first to go.

I don't find much use for :apple: in posts, but I think it looks good as a separator in signatures.

We need the following new categories of smilies:
Pornographic
Threatening
Homophobic and homosexual
Ones representing religions and cults
Ill health
Heartbreak
Ones representing various political parties
Scatological
Advertisements for sale. If you used, say, a VW smilie then VW would send you money.
Hate smilies representing the Klan, Nazis, etc.
NRA smilies with designs of guns and ammo
Pet smilies with a choice of every sort of animal
Hobby smilies from model airplanes to knitting
Foodie smilies depicting sesame-crusted ahi tuna, etc.
Cartoon figures. Homer, Dora, Donald Duck, etc.
Gangsta. Show your affiliation or die
Religious. Same as above.
And many others. Soon the posts themselves will be irrelevant. Like this one.

A slightly increased collection wouldn't be all bad...though we could place more stringent limits on the raw number allowed per post. I've always been partial to this guy: http://drien.com/macrumors/random/gonemad.gif
