I don't have my install cds anymore, but I do have my leopard retail disc, so can that take the place of my install discs?

Yes, retail discs are not tied to a specific model.

it will install OSX for you, but does not have the iLife apps or other apps that came bundled with the iMac.

Then you have everything that you don't have anymore.

Do you happen to know what version of Mac OS X came with your iMac? If the Mac OS X version on the retail disc is newer than the one that came with your Mac (for example, my iMac came with 10.5.2, and the latest retail disc comes with 10.5.4) you'll be just fine. If not, then you might have problems getting it to install.

My imac came with OSX 10.4.11 or something like that... it was the latest update to tiger. It's an aluminum iMac btw.

You'll be fine then.
