Over the weekend, Apple seeded Build 9J34 of Mac OS X 10.5.7 to developers. World of Apple publishes (http://news.worldofapple.com/archives/2009/03/21/apple-seeds-new-build-of-mac-os-x-1057-seed-notes/) the seed notes, which detail ten changes since the previous seed (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/03/13/apple-seeds-os-x-10-5-7-build-9j30-to-developers/) and continue to list a lack of Safari 4 beta compatibility as the only remaining known issue.Apple has this weekend seeded a new build (9J34) of the next update to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The build comes with improvements to Mail and the speech dictionary as well as several other fixes adding to the 80+ list of fixes already present.

Developers are being asked to focus on Flash Player, flash and USB drives, MobileMe syncing and many other areas.

Who does need it? The actual Leopard becomes more stable and mature now. I personally wouldn't upgrade to Snow Leopard, until there is an update like 10.6.3 or even bigger version number.

Look at Tiger, how amazing stable it is ...

I wonder what the holdup is on Safari 4 compatibility?

As for Flash, meg. I don't use it that much and when I do, it's fast enough for me. Faster & more efficient is always better, I guess.

Wonder what the improvements to Mail will be... hopefully make it work better with Exchange in IMAP (Resolved issue with Mail accounts and syncing)....

I'm also intrigued to see what these Mail improvements can be. Come 10.5.7, fix our DFU issues!

I hope Apple finally found the cause of that "Mail doesn't play new mail sound when there actually is new mail" bug and fixed it. :p

On a more serious note, there's a significant bug in 10.5.6 with Spaces refusing to enable itself in certain circumstances until you restart your Mac. Hope Apple found and fixed this issue.

Pure guess...

10.5.7 will see availability through software update this week or next.

Yes! That is a really annoying bug.

Mail seems to be that one app that just never works exactly right. I've used Thunderbird, Outlook, Netscape Mail before that, mutt on unix, etc. and I love Mail.app out of all of them, but it just seems to always have a few really minor but annoying issues.

One for me deals with IMAP. I have 4-5 IMAP accounts in Mail.app and the subscription functionality is just blatantly not there: you can view the dialog box for subscribing to folders but it doesn't do anything, both from my own experience and checking around on the web. Mail.app also seems to enjoy not updating it's unread count when you right click an IMAP folder and tell it to 'mark all as read'. These are Mail.app issues for sure, as I see them on accounts with a variety of IMAP servers, so I know it's not a server issue, plus Thunderbird has no problem with these IMAP servers.

Snow Leopard though, with its MS Exchange support built-in, probably means they'll be working a lot on their groupware products (iCal, Mail.app, Address Book, etc.) so maybe Mail.app will finally receive the attention it needs.

Do you think this release will make Safari snappier?:)
Seriously, I see in the seed notes that Bluetooth is listed as something to test. I wonder what they moght have done to Bluetooth? I have a wireless Mighty Mouse that I can't get to track no matter what I do. So, naturally I'm hoping that this will 'fix' it - at least for me.

My biggest problem with Mail and IMAP is when I move messages into folders but they aren't updated on the server... happens regularly and is very annoying!

I guess we won't be seeing Snow Leopard soon then. Looks like the June 8 event is indeed when Apple will release the Snow Leopard.

I won't wait anymore, I'm going down to the Apple Store this week to finally get my 24" iMac.

Presumably because they will ship 10.5.7 with Safari 4. Why not? The browser wars are on again and Apple cannot afford to sit on a new Safari version just in hopes the new browser would sell copies of Snow Leopard six months from now.

My guess would be a new Safari 4 beta. The final version will almost certainly come with Snow Leopard (with downloads available for Leopard and hopefully Tiger, like the beta).

Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/03/apple-releases-fourth-test-build-of-1057-to-developers.ars) says "a late-March or possibly early-April release." So everyone is guessing, but my guess is that a single Safari compatibility issue won't hold up the release very long.

Maybe Safari 4 will be mature by then and ready for release :) It wouldn't be unheard of for Apple to release a major Safari revision for a current Mac OS X.

Gama change is not likely at all.

Apparently it is coming in Snow Leopard, here (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/25/new_snow_leopard_seed_leak_confirms_cocoa_finder_more.html).

Also in iWeb 09 they changed a few things and one of the steps they suggest is changing your gamma to 2.2, here (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3440)

Gamma change is comming I believe, it would make sense for them to put it in the last update to Leopard (I'm not saying that this is the last update to Leopard).

Changing the gamma is one of the first things I do when setting up a mac. I'd be glad to see this as default.

Definitely - the default gamma has always looked a bit washed out. I always re-calibrate to 2.2... much deeper and richer colours and blacks.

But wonder if there will be any enhancements to the Finder etc with the gamma changing to 2.2? Is that why iTunes 8.1 looked brighter compared to everything else, because that way on 2.2 it'll look the same as it did on 1.8?

Also, if the gamma changes to 2.2 gamma in Mac OS 10.5.7, then hopefully Mac OS X will look proper with it. If iTunes 8.1 is lighter as people claim it is, then do it for the whole system as well. Pre-Mac OS 10.5.7, changing the gamma to 2.2 made the whole system look dark.

Most MacBook owners on MR's change their gamma to 2.2 because it makes the screen look less washed out. You'll have changed it yourself/maybe used someone else's colour calibration.

I hate 2.2 gamma on traditional matte displays. It might look good on glossy new displays, I wouldn't know because I only have matte displays, but I sure hope they include both calibrations that the end user can easily choose from.

I used to calibrate to 2.2 gamma on my old matte MBP too. Glossy or matte, it makes the colours deeper and less washed out.

But it is what you prefer or what true calibration you use I guess.. You can easily switch to 1.8 gamma if you found 2.2 not suitable though.

I often calibrate MacBooks, etc. when I see them in stores - I've always felt it was a shame that with the big deal with OS X and Quartz, anti-aliasing, etc., the default calibration just fails and makes it look pretty bad - at least Leopard introduced defaulting to 'best for main display' for anti-aliasing.

2.2 makes a decent difference, but where is everyone looking to see/change just the gamma without going through calibration all over again?

Not that I know of - after changing my gamma setting to 2.2, I like the new colors much better.

I've been using 1.8 for the past 3 years. I just changed to 2.2 and I think the colors look better.
