Anti Virus to scan Windows?

Is there some kind of utility that will scan a Windows Drive (say I put my laptop HDD into an external casing) for viruses?

I never really trust running a scanner with an infected computer.

If you're planning to use Windows for the scanning use Avast Home Edition (link). It's free, has a small footprint and good detection rates.

If on OSX use ClamXAV as r.j.s says :)
