the last server we rolled out was one of these monsters:

with 1 blade, single quad core and 4gb ram, 8 147gb SAS drives. They are amazing to work with and for a blade setup suprisingly affordable.

What exactly are you looking for? What are your needs/what is it used for?
I'd put up my nas box, but it's just in an old tower laying on the floor with a temporary psu hanging out the side.:p

It's a linux web/file/game server. It's in a small case already but I've decided to clean it up so I want to move the server into a rack case and dedicate it as a game server and create a new machine for the WAN/LAN/web server (also rack mounted). Both will be BOINCing it up on seti in their free time (the existing one is already).

I'll be posting a pic of the current mess when I get home :p

I haven't used any rack mount equipment. I imagine your wanting to stay away from 1U so you can avoid fitting/cooling problems?

Yeah, I'm thinking 3u/4u it'll be way easier to cool and I don't need it to be thin... I'm not needing to conserve rack space.

I'm going to need to fit 4 drives in the WAN/LAN box though... but I doubt that'll really be an issue.

Basically a machine dedicated to a certain task(s) or providing services. Web servers host websites, file servers provide centralized storage, etc.
In most cases servers use components of higher quality than say your desktop because of the extreme loads they experience. Redundancy is also a high priority. Most have more than one power supply, hard drives arranged in some sort of raid array with spares, and most components are hot swappable.

For home use any old machine will usually suffice since the load will be minimal and a little down time isn't going to hurt anything.

I pretty much decided in the last couple days that my NAS is moving from Ubuntu to OpenSolaris. ZFS + Raid-Z sounds too good to be true. Anyone interested in a Jetway board with dual gigabit? :D

Some servers at work... I helped upgrade and install them (in that order) but they are being used for a virtual datacentre for our developers. Each blade has 2 Quad Core Xeon processors, 32GB RAM and 2x146GB 15000 RPM SAS drives.

My home server, it keeps flitting between OSX and Ubuntu, at the moment its Ubuntu until I can afford a decent Graphics Card which OSX supports... It has 1.5TB storage at the moment (I wrecked the SATA connection on one of the 500GBs so I replaced it with a 1TB drive (thank god for backups!), but I'd like to get a 2x5.25 to 3x3.5 bay enclosure and have a nice RAID-5 array made of 1 or 2TB drives.
