First time using Handbrake last night. I am very happy with the results. This thread is to make it easy for first timers like me to set-up Handbrake.

Mac GUI settings -

Apple ~ Universal ~
Format: MP4 File
Codec: AVC/H.264 Video/AAC + AC3 Audio
Insert iPod Atom: Unchecked
Video - Encoder: x264
Constant Quality: 62%

Picture Settings -
Anamorphic: Loose
Crop: Automatic
VFR: Enabled
Denoise: none

Audio + Subtitles -
Track 1 : AAC - DPL2
Track 2 : English AC3 5.1
Bitrate: 160kbps (only affects AAC)
Sample Rate: 48khz
Dynamic Range Compression: 0
Subtitles: Unchecked
Chapters: Enabled

2ch/5.1ch Audio and video works well with my 50" Sony LCD TV via new Mac Mini. Playback is GREAT on my MacBook, MacBook Air 1.6ghz (1st gen). No skips or lag. Audio matches too. As you can see, iPhone looks GREAT too. Zoom mode is a bit cut off on the sides.

video works well with my 50" Sony LCD TV

My conversions look ok on my 37 inch 720p through Apple TV. I can't imagine how much worse they'd look on a 50 inch.

It was my first try. It looked GREAT on everything I need it to. I am ripping Office Space now with denoise - OFF. I'll report back with my findings.

On my 50" Sony LCD TV, it looked like standard DVD to me. Even if it is actually less quality, I can live with it due to the connivence.

yeah, lose denoise. maybe use it only in weak mode for the worst offenders (personally has never used it outside of testing). picture will look sharper without it.

Back to the Future II screen shot taken from my MacBook Air. Love this movie. Not too bad for 1989. :) Sorry for posting so many pictures. I am just very happy with the results. I love being able to take everything on to my iPhone.

The only thing about constant quality is the kbps can vary quite a bit. Knowing the "Universal" setting should allow playing a video on all of Apple's devices, what happens if the kbps exceeds 2500 (the limit for the iPhone and iPod)?

They aren't real limitations of those devices, at least the iPhone/iPod Touch.

So far every movie played well on my iPhone, MacBook, MacBook Air (1st gen), Mac Mini to 50" LCD TV. Now if I can get the DD 5.1 surround to work and I'm in busniess. Any suggestions?
