When Will They Redesign the iMac [Archive]

I think apple needs to wise up and redesign the system. Don't get me wrong, it looks great and performs like a charm, but their product spread isn't so hot.

They need to redesign the iMac to hold actual DESKTOP compenents.

When will this happen!? I've been waiting for 2 generations expecting this.

No. I don't agree at all. iMac's are well spec'd systems for the market Apple is aiming at. I don't want an iMac with desktop components - taking up valuable desk space. Noo...

Maybe what you want is a Mac Pro :rolleyes: or, maybe a Dell. ;)

No changes in the processor between this generation and the last one.

Mac Pro's have Quad Core processors. ;)

Previous to my iMac G4 I owned a Quad Core system with 4GB DDR2 RAM etc... and Vista ( :( ) and it became quite clear to me that Windows wasn't prepared to take advantage of anything beyond a Dual Core processor. Sure some high-tech geek may say 'rubbish, Vista is multi-threaded / multi-core *blah blah blah*; yeah it may be. But then, why did a Quad Core system start to stutter when burning a DVD while browsing the web, while listening to a podcast? Poor implementation of multi-processor support.

Did I just go out on a tangent? :D

I think if anything was missing, would be a middle of the road Mac Pro. However, that would pull from the iMac market which is why it won't happen.

So until Apple gets a significantly larger Market share, the type of line-up they have is all that will be available.

When 8-core Mac Pros were the standard, the Quad-Core custom configuration was exactly the same price as a 24" iMac... no coincidence, I think!

Nowadays perhaps mostly to the recession there is a $300 (or £100) gap between the top end iMac and entry level Mac Pro.

Dunno. Hardware fault? Poor drivers? God-awful application software (I favour this one to be honest). I've had no trouble doing what you describe above and more on XP or Vista. Sure, I prefer OSX (especially compared to vista) or I wouldn't be here, but the last two versions of Windows don't have problems for me that you just described.

Redesign in no less than three years.

They JUST moved their laptops to the same design. They're NOT going to just turn around and make the iMac break the uniformity.

I agree with the poster above that said something along the lines that it would be silly to have a desktop component iMac taking up more space. I think the iMac is a great blend of screen real estate with the minimum desk top footprint.

what would they even redesign it to? you can get something like a dock station or a USB hub. i think the iMac is beautiful.

if you're arguing about quad-cores. give it a year. technology is increasing at a fast pace. if they put it in their iMacs it could have possibly killed the Mac Pro line right now.

I don't think what you want to happen ever will. Which IMO is a very good thing, as I love the design of the iMac. I understand the argument for creating an xMac, not that I necessarily agree with it. But I think turning the iMac into a regular desktop would be criminal.

I agree the Imac is great and i love not having too much ***** on my desktop.
I also have four windows based pc's and have given all of them away to family members.
After experiencing true speed and just having things actually work when commanded to i could never go back to temperamental memory hogging windows PC crap.
And being in school i have seen the last three changes of Imac and am pleased with the progress although it be minimal.
