Movie files Compressing Software and AV Cables

Still new to my MacBook so I want to start exploring!!!!!!!!!!

What is the best software for compressing any type of movie file and burning them to a DVD ?

I will not be importing DVD's so I am just looking for compression and burn ability in the software

I have an AV cable for my ipod and I was wondering if I place it into my headset jack on my MacBook, will it play movie files to another TV screen?

Or do I need to get a different cable for other terminals in the back of my MacBook

I like Handbrake for conversions of all sorts.

The jack on your MacBook is audio only. You need to get a video adapter that plugs into the external video port of your MacBook.
