Apple announced (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/) today that this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will take place from June 8th through 12th in the Moscone West convention center in San Francisco. Basic promotional information (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/experience/) on what attendees can expect is provided on Apple's site, but the full schedule of events is yet to be published. The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is the premier technical event for developers and IT professionals innovating with Apple platforms. Over 1,000 Apple engineers will be at Moscone West to present the latest Apple technologies and provide you with code-level guidance. You’ll learn how to harness the power of iPhone OS, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard in the most efficient and sophisticated way possible — saving you time and accelerating your development. Bring your MacBook and your imagination, and prepare to make your ideas happen.
As it did last year, Apple is offering three tracks for attendees: iPhone, Mac, and IT. The conference will include technical sessions, hands-on labs, as well as other special events. Registration is $1295 before April 24th, after which the price will increase to $1595.

So presumably WWDC will bring iPhone OS 3.0 and Snow Leopard 10.6. Both are basically versions of OS X.
I wonder how much co-dependancy (is there a more technical term?) there is between the two. I mean, how many features/add-ons to the iPhone also depend on 10.6 ... like Notes syncing or Exchange preferences, esp since 10.6 will have native Exchange support.
Looking forward to finding out more. Apple is, after all, a software company that just happens to make it's own hardware. This WWDC brings some BIG software updates across the board.

Announced. They probably won't go on sale until June 30 -- the 2nd anniversary of the original iPhone launch. Coincedentially June 30 is a Tuesday! Alternatively, they'll go on sale the 26th, which is the last Friday of the quarter.

Interestingly, despite Apple's closer ties with nVidia, it's ATI that seems to have come up with the first application for OpenCL. ATI has co-operated with Havok (owned by Intel) and gotten it hardware accelerated through OpenCL. Presumably this should allow Havok Physics acceleration on ATI, nVidia, Intel (no doubt Larrabee and maybe Westmere IGPs), PowerVR (ie. next-gen iPhone), and any other GPU that supports OpenCL, which is much more open than nVidia's PhysX acceleration implemented in their proprietary C for CUDA language.
Hopefully, Apple will bring out ATI and Havok physics as a demo for OpenCL and Snow Leopard at WWDC using the HD4850 in the new iMac and HD4870 in the new Mac Pro. nVidia probably wouldn't be too happy about that.

It's worth it if your company sells software or hardware that depends on Apple, it's not worth it if you just want to say "weeeee I was there when they announced the new iPhone".
It's only become such a huge deal for regular users since Apple has stopped doing so many other trade shows.
Likewise, for the people complaining that it focuses to much on the iPhone, it's because Macs now use standard PC parts and ports, so they don't need to lay out the latest nubus revision, it's PCIe. iPhone/iPod ports are still proprietary, so more time is spent going over the details.

Possibly, if only in a roundabout way as an end user. In their zeal to promote the iPhone, Apple seems to be increasingly leaving the Mac and OS X by the wayside. Despite more developers buying Macs to engage in a frenzy of iPhone app development, and the fact that the development tools for both iPhone and Mac are sitting right there in front of them as a result (with not even much difference between the two), the Mac software market doesn't seem to be experiencing much growth. I don't think it'd kill Apple to pimp the Mac a little more than they're doing now. Besides, I think Snow Leopard's internal advancements open up an opportunity to really push the Mac platform forward.

Now now, Phil wasn't the guy who decided what Apple would and would not have ready to introduce at the expo. And besides, Phil has been helping out in Steve's keynotes for years and years. Just look through some of the Macworld and WWDC keynotes up on YouTube.
Edit: I just noticed the bold in your quote and realized you were talking specifically about the comeback part. However, it'd be just as cool in my mind if Steve strolled on-stage as they were hanging up. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see him there and agree with some people on here that it would be somewhat of an epic coming back appearance.
Rock-star-esque cheers from the crowd, etc. It'd be sort of like easing us back from Steveless keynotes into Steve running the show again.
What would be cool is if it went like this.
Announcer: Now to present the keynote, I give you Phil Schiller!
Crowd: .........
Steve Jobs: *Walks on stage*
Crowd: Huge applause and roar for ten minutes!
OR
Announcer: Now to present the keynote, I give you Phil Schiller!
Phil Schiller: *Walks on stage* "Thank you all for joining us. We are excited to see many developers and peers come out in praise of iPhone OS and Mac OS X. Now I but some of you are wondering what I meant by "us" and "we." Let me elaborate for you. I now present to you the CEO of Apple. inc! Mr. Steve Jobs everyone!!!"
Steve Jobs: *Walks on stage*
Crowd: Huge applause and roar for ten minutes!
Steve Jobs: "Thank you! Thank you! Now onto my health! I am fine. I'm not going to die. I will remain with your as CEO and a part of Apple for as long as I live. I am very exited to have Phil and I talk to you about iPhone OS 3.0, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server, and [insert insanely cool new Apple gadget here; such as the xMac, Apple Tablet, or Apple netbook]."
I prefer the second situation. Except I would like the [insert insanely cool new Apple gadget here; such as the xMac, Apple Tablet, or Apple netbook] to not be announced until last and in the mean time they can refer to it as "something special."
Btw, I almost cried while typing up this post..:o

I guess the only updates iPhone will be getting are internal - I can't see them using an image of the current unit if anything were to change. But my predictions are usually horribly off. I guess they could surprise with a metal back.
but how wrong you are. notice that the top of the phone, where a front facing camera would be ideally placed is cropped off, you cant even see the earpiece. so it could be a "hahaha look what we are showing you and you dont even know about it" kinda thing. and plus the back will most likely be changed in someway.

It's not cut off in the ADC e-mails Apple sent, and on the website it's just darker. There's no front camera visible in either picture. But Apple wouldn't put the new iPhone on their website before WWDC regardless, that doesn't mean there isn't going to be a new one.

The news is great but our rumor mill is still slim on the hardware side of things.
1. Pictures (Fake or Real) have not emerged.
2. Hardware specifics -A few of these but nothing really to let us know what is in store for the new iPhone.
I do believe that both snow leopard and iPhone (New) will be talked about.
The event about 3.0 software was covered very throughly, leaving the iPhone only the last 10- 20 minutes to talk about the new hardware, and what modifications have been done to 3.0 software @ WWDC.
The main focus or "wow" factor will be engulfing the audience on all the newest features of Snow Leopard.

1) You are perhaps overlooking that this is Apple. Apple execs takes 10 minutes just to talk about ONE new feature in iPhoto. I doubt they could cover a significantly new iPhone in 20.
2) The invite makes it clear that the iPhone is going to be the star. Considering this is a dev. conf. the invite isn't to welcoming to Mac devs.
Considering this I think the keynote will be flipped from what you are suggesting, i.e., 20 minutes on Snow Leopard... if that, and 2 hours on the new iPhone. I suspect Apple will wait to officially announce 10.6 at the fall computer special event, and that it will ship in October.

And then these people say, "Oh, that icon is purple instead of green!" or, in October, "Oh, see the spacing of the Apple logo in relation to the size of the screen? That laptop is really, really small! It must be a MacBook Nano!"
Nonsense.:D
Personally, I would have thought that since we're NEVER right about this stuff that we'd have given up by now.

The invitation makes it look like the iPhone will again take center stage. This makes me a bit sad, I was hoping for Snow Leopard to make the news to promote OS X. More and more it looks like Apple is turning into a company that specializes in portable consumer electronics. :(
P-Worm
Well seeing as how any industry expert will tell you that personal, mobile computers are the future and where you'll see most developments, that makes perfect sense. Just a couple months ago laptops outsold their desktop counterparts for the first time and when iPhone-sized devices get a little faster they'll be able to offer most of the functionality that the average user desires from a computer.
I love it because Apple mucked up their first attempt by not marketing the Mac well enough to developers and letting Windows dominate the scene for 20 years and it's like they get a second chance now. The way things are going I can't imagine any other company having the ability to take over the mobile market like Apple does with the iPhone.
Anyways...
I'm sure it's just the pessimist inside, but I have this sneaking suspicion that they won't give us a new iPhone at this event, or even worse, just offer a minor upgrade to the aesthetics and a bump in storage. I hope they realize how many people are expecting an amazing new iPhone and squash any hopes for one if they don't plan on releasing it. I just want something to not only take the wind out of the Palm Pre's sails, (which I think a 3G with 3.0 does anyways) but really rip them down and set fire to them.

I think Apple does a good job on Battery life all in all. Remember its a balance between the current battery technology available, what the device does and its size. It will always be this way becuase as batteries get better but people demand more.
Also remember you can turn off Location Based Services and 3G to save power.

The way I figure, Apple needs to release a new product this summer. Peoplle who originally bought the 1gen and didn't upgrade to 3g (me) have our contracts expiring in June/July.
I'm hoping for a new model this summer otherwise I'm probably going to start looking into other options because I really see no benefit to "upgrading" to the 3g. I upgraded and tried it out for two weeks when it came out and it just felt like a waste of an upgrade.

Well, at least we would get some kind of announcement, I could hold out till Q4 as long as I knew for sure it was coming.
I was gonna hit on this subject a little as well. With as many people here that are SO sure there will be a new iPhone announced this WWDC (myself included) Man OH MAN, do I forsee A HUGE amount of bitching headed our way if they don't. In fact if they do not announce anything new I may not check in for a couple days to let all that sift out a bit. Oh and I'll be picking up a new 3G the next day, so I'm really excited either way, I'm just glad I've held off juuuust in case. :D
I am in the same boat with both of you.
I too am hoping for a new iPhone, whether it be a memory bump or cosmetic.... Either way is fine.
Its just mind boggling that last year this time , we had some sort of pictures to go on *The iPhone that had the black casing that most thought was fake*
We also were getting reports of ATT receiving allot of boxes as well as getting notification that a ton of crates were coming in for Apple.....
Either way , Ill still be devoted to standing outside and this time with my wife (As I have converted her into getting one this year and camping out).

...how big is the biggest hall at the conference anyway? If I would go there it would annoy me the rest of my life to know that I was waiting out in the foyeer when the biggest news of the year were rolled out...
The 3rd floor hall is 87,000 square feet for the main rectangle - longer than an American football field and almost twice as wide.
It can accommodate just over 6,000 people in the 3rd floor ballroom. Apple has configured for about 4,000 people in previous events. (Note that the 6K number is determined by the capacity of the emergency exits in the room, not by the total size.)

I guess my point was that it just seems odd that they would show an image of a product that was going to be updated physically without obscuring it heavily (i.e. brick event). Or maybe you actually understood what I was saying and I missed your point...
You might be new to following Apple product launches, but at NO TIME in the past have they made an effort to do what you're talking about. The last event that comes to mind is when they announced 100% completely redesigned MacBooks/MacBook Pros and used an invitation highlighting a then current model. Showing a current iPhone in this invitation means absolutely nothing. Nada. Zilch. Now move along people, there's nothing more to discuss about the matter.

Maybe I should clarify my question...
Is it likely that Apple will present some new worldsaving product without massive media coverage? (I don´t know the history on this, that´s why I´m asking)
...and if so, would the media get some advance notice, and how early then?

It says EROM. Finally, Apple is bringing the world-class technology of EROM to its users.
Actually, according to the secret message, there will be free ham at WWDC:

The ham will only be free if you already have an iPork.
However, if you have an iPork Touch then there will be a $9.95 upgrade fee.

Steve is gonna leap on stage looking like a giant.
I wouldn't expect to see Jobs at all at WWDC.
Even if he's able, I think that Apple and its directors realize that the "Steve personality cult" was no longer a good thing for Apple.
They're grooming a new set of "front men" (and "set" is important, they don't want another dominant spokesperson). To have the triumphant return of the Lord God Jobs would undermine that succession planning.
They don't want to return to the situation where the stock price is tied to the health reports on one person.
If he is recovering and will soon be returning to Apple, (and I hope so), I wouldn't be surprised by a relatively low-key appearance sometime during the week. I wouldn't expect that at the keynote, though, because anything that Apple was trying to announce would be lost in the "Jobs Is Back!" and "Does He Look OK?" mania.
Maybe I should clarify my question...
Is it likely that Apple will present some new worldsaving product without massive media coverage?
The question really is "will the worldsaving product be announced at WWDC?", I think.
And the answer should be "no" - Apple doesn't want to tie major product announcements to events that run on a fixed schedule. They want to announce when the product is ready - whether it's before or after the event. MacWorld SF was awful timing - right after the holiday season. WWDC is better, but too early for a holiday launch - any product buzz is gone before the holiday shopping season starts.
Also, remember that WWDC used to be a developer's conference before it became the Summer MacWorld. I would think that there would be some at Apple who would want to return it to the status of a developer conference.

I think it's fairly obvious that the iPhone will see a hardware change. With rumors on the internet of some carriers discontinuing models it is quite obvious. I say this order at the keynote:
- first snow leopard in all it's awesomeness
- second a brief touch on iPhone 3.0 and then after people have been anticipating it all keynote they will unvail the new 8gb, 16gb and 32gb iPhones with price points of $149, $224 and $299... or just the new 16gb and 32gb at $199 and $299 respectivly. They will for certain have faster processors and a slight design change.
- third they will tie in all the new changes of the iPhone 3.0 software to hardware and everyone will wet their pants with excitement.

The invitation makes it look like the iPhone will again take center stage. This makes me a bit sad, I was hoping for Snow Leopard to make the news to promote OS X. More and more it looks like Apple is turning into a company that specializes in portable consumer electronics. :(
P-WormDon't be sad. Be glad!
Seriously, it'll be both. They were able to really be clever with the 4 letter words (ha) on the front of the phone so they went with that instead of somehow being clever in another manner with Snow Leopard. They'll be plenty to talk about with Snow Leopard I'm sure.
But we're probably going to get 3.0 goodness along with a preview of 3rd Gen. of the iPhone so that totally rocks.
In their zeal to promote the iPhone, Apple seems to be increasingly leaving the Mac and OS X by the wayside.SNOW LEOPARD. HAVE YOU HEARD OF IT!? Also, in 2009 (as recent as 3/3/9) we got updated Minis, iMacs and Mac Pros + 17" Mac Book Pros in January and Mac Books and 15" Mac Book Pros in Late Fall. Oh and (whether you love/hate it) a new 4GB Shuffle.

Trust me. Give it time. We have ALL of April and May to go. If you do a little research, as I did about a month ago, you'll see that last year before the 3G was announced the Rumor Mill really caught fire around mid April and then continued and rolled into May with just ridiculous amounts of Rumors.
I'm actually suprised we've seen some of the rumors we have so early this time around. We've already got 1 'leaked photo' with the matte black case and there's news of video conferencing at least once every two weeks (just like before the 3G :D)
We havn't even got started good yet, just you wait. You'll be so damned confused and over-anticipating by the time June 8th hit's you won't have a clue what to think!
Tip: keep expectations "low". makes it a little easier when they don't give you what (anything) you want. ;)

It's clear that you're not a developer who would go to a five day conference to learn about how to prepare for changes in the new versions of the operating systems.
As others have said many times already, $1600 for a five day conference is on the low side. I do several a year that are $2000 or more for three days.
Look at it in context. A senior developer in the US is probably making $2000 per week - so the conference is quite a bit less than her salary for that one week. A convenient downtown business hotel is a good deal at $200/night - another $1200 or so depending on flight connections. Flights, another big chunk of money. Connections to downtown - not cheap unless (like me) you're OK with getting on BART at the airport and taking mass transit into the city.
WWDC is a training session for senior leads in engineering - not a "joy ride" for fanbois to watch a Stevenote. The price is justified.

Uh-huh, those Mac updates. The ones that Apple didn't think were significant enough to merit any kind of event even though a peek at their as-yet unreleased iPhone 3.0 OS did? A Mac update that included the Mini after it was neglected for well over a year? You think that reassures people? It doesn't for me. An extensive and overdue update to the Mac line-up merits almost no fanfare, but the iPhone OS did. Yeah, not too reassuring.
The reality is that Apple got those out so now they only have to spend a couple minutes on them in the keynote. "We just refreshed the Mac line-up... blah blah... selling great... customers love them... look at this pretty sales figure chart we made in Keynote... blah blah... now onto iPhone."
Look at the major events from the last couple years. The iPhone has dominated and frankly, it's getting a little tiresome and I think people will have every right to gripe if Apple does it again at WWDC.

I read from a lot of people trying out the current Dev Version of Snow Leopard that it's still way too buggy to be released in June. So I guess we'll get some demo of Snow Leopard stressing the even fuller 64 bit support and some graphs comparing it to the performance of Leopard.
Maybe there'll be one killer feature (like Spotlight for Tiger and Time Machine for Leopard) to make people upgrade that think their Mac is plenty fast with Leopard. Resolution Independence could be such a feature; the framework was already there for Leopard and Apple told 3rd party Devs to make everything resolution independent. But that feature got silently dropped from Leopard.
Resolution independence would be useful on the fabled 10" tablet Mac. It would make sense for a tablet to have a higher resolution than an iMac (100PPI) and a Macbook (130) because you typically hold it closer to your head when operating. 150 PPI would be adequate I guess, that's 1280x800 (Macbook resolution) on a 10" display. The iPhone has 160 PPI by the way. Zooming in and out would be needed so you can accurately tap tiny buttons on the regular Mac OSX. Every Mac can already zoom (CTRL + scroll up), but it looks rather ugly because it just scales the pixels. 150 PPi would make for an awesome PDF viewing device (eBook Reader). Imagine a service technician carrying all the user and service manuals of all the devices he's servicing. He could also print out relevant instructions for the user thanks to OSX abundant printer drivers. Of course he could do that with a Macbook, too, but a tablet is much more portable. A slot for a 3G SIM card would be nice, too.

The presentations from WWDC are available after. Everyone deserves it and it will be available. Of course there are many things that are only available at the conference, like the one on one interaction, etc. that are only possible when you attend.
I understand your dilemma, it's hard to afford this for many folks. As a previous poster explained, this is not a money maker for Apple, they try to hit a break-even on the costs. It's helpful if you can write off the expense.
So the eticket is $1295, the hotel for me for this trip is $1500. That includes two or three extra nights, depending on how you look at it. We are staying Sun. through Fri. in SF, and one night each way riding up there and coming back. Since we are driving up from So. Cal., but those extra nights and the gas are about the same as us flying up. Then add in meals, a little fun time, etc. maybe another $500. So I am estimating about $3300 for this trip. Maybe a bit more if I buy some T shirts for the kids and grandson. So maybe $3500. So the admission is about 37% of the cost.
Another way to look at this is to compare this to other training classes from third parties. I've looked at a few, and some are more expensive for a weeks' training. Others are about the same.

Excellent! The high price is to discourage tourists and fanbois from taking up space at WWDC. Serious Mac and iPhone developers, many who make enough money that the WWDC expense is only a small to tiny fraction of their (or their companies) income, don't want to be crowded out by the riff-raff, and want to network with other professional developers.

Each session is first-come first-serve, however I would say with the sessions 95% of them you can always squeeze in and find a seat or sit alone the wall(depending on if the fire marshall/dept is doing an inspection). It really varies year from year. However, last year it was kinda crazy with some of the iPhone session.
They have technology labs that are open all day that you can go in and just ask questions. I don't know how fast the lab sessions(if they even still have them) fill up, the last lab I went to was 2 years ago.
Also for the keynote, showing up 2 hours early in NOT enough. Maybe it will be different if Steve isn't there.

Well I got my ticket. The way I see it is going to this conference is an investment; and if I build an app that sells well I'll make that money spent back and then some. Plus I just bought an iPod Touch solely for development. Another investment in my eyes. Just need to not over-invest, just yet ;)
