Does anyone know of any software or how to get video off of a dvd so that I can edit it in Final Cut Pro? The guy who had the dvd made has hired me so I'm not stealing video....he just wants some of it on his website so....I have to get it off the dvd somehow...thanks

MPEG Streamclip will do it.

I'd second MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html). It's free and works well. Not the most polished interface, but it does the trick.

Cinematize (http://www.miraizon.com/products/products.html) is a commercial app that has more polish, but isn't, y'know, free.

free is good for this project =)

as long as it doesn't ruin the quality of the video

You can rip it as DV, so no quality loss.

also, copy the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive first. The transcode will go notably faster than pulling it off the DVD as it goes.

Just got home from work and downloaded MPEG streamline......I copied the folder "video_TS" to my desktop but I have no idea what these files are inside....*.BUP, *.IFO, and a few *.VOB's......anyone know what to do with these ?

Open the first .vob with MPEG Streamclip and then choose an export option.

i was just about to write this but i saw a reply...

edit - just figured out .vob are the movie files... =) everything worked great. Just trying to figure out how to lower the file size so that I can convert the movies to flash videos for a website...right now they are 6gb

Once you import them into FCP and edit them, then you should be able to reduce them just fine.

Remember, if you are using DV, 1 hour of video = 13GB.
