Do I need to do a defrag of sorts? Or how do I maintain a smoothy running MacBook?

OSX defrags large files by itself. Nothing you need do. Just use it.

Google OnlyX. It is a free mac maintenance program, and it's wonderful. Run all the utilities on it.
