Subler can be used for adding subtitles, chapters and metadata (even the HD-tag).

Also, make sure you set the cnID tag to be identical for the two files you want to show up combined (for SD/HD copies).

HD movies automatically get the HD logo on Apple TV. All my 720p jobbies have the logo, and I didn't add any tags.

Yes, but not in iTunes itself unless you tag them as such.
Another vote for Subler here.

Strange; didn't work.
I'm not sure about the tree you mentioned, as I have an HD tag option as a standalone tick-box. It's ticked and the file was saved, but it didn't show up in iTunes.

It doesn't show up in the new Grid view - only in the List or Cover Flow view

I made a video tutorial on adding this tag, as well as creating HD-SD files in iTunes. Check it out http://www.thecheapgeek.org/2009/03/14/creating-dual-resolution-video-files-in-itunes/
I also did a follow up post on the changes for HD movies, that post is here http://www.thecheapgeek.org/2009/03/24/169/

Depends which view you use :)

Better ask Apple. Now that they have started selling HD movies it would make sense to update Grid view as well

Excellent tutorial, however you may want to have a look at Subler. It's a GUI based on the mp4v2 tools and saves on using Terminal if you are not that experienced with it.

Wait, what? They already show up there.
I mean, when you buy an HD television show, the HD tag shows up in Grid View in iTunes, so are you saying that they just don't have it in the Video section's Grid View?

No it doesn't. When you look at the initial Grid View for TV Shows there is no HD tag. It's only when you double click on the TV Show and go into a list view do you see the HD tag

The HD Tag doesn't show up in Grid view, change views to see it.

You can change that within iTunes itself. Right-click, Get Info, and find the dropdown menu to change media type.

The tag is the internal ID number that Apple gives all its Movies / TV Show Episodes. It is used (among other things) to get both the HD & SD version of a movie or TV Show to appear as 1 entry in the iTunes list.
If you are only creating 1 version of your movie (either HD or SD) there is no real need to add it. However, I'm creating both a HD (for Apple TV) and SD (for iPod/iPhone) of my movies and I make sure the cnID is the same for both - that way i get the HD-SD tag you see when you buy a HD movie or HD TV Show from iTunes.
You can add your own cnID (i just started at 1 and increment with each film i have), however you can check the actual cnID that Apple assign to Movies. In iTunes, when viewing an actual movie you can right click on the name of the movie and select "Copy iTunes Store URL". Just drop it in something like TextEdit, you will se an id number, about 8 or 9 digits long. That is the cnID.
It seems they are also using this cnID for the Genius recommendations of Movies & TV Shows.

If you are using Subler you can set the Video Kind / Media Type within it.

The mp4v2 developer pointed me to his GUI based software called tagger. I recorded a quick walk through and tutorial on using this to create HD and dual resolution files in itunes. http://Thecheapgeek.org

Just a quick correction... he is a team member of the mp4v2 library project. There are other fine developers working on it as well. :D

Yes you are right, one of the mp4v2 dev's. Not the dev.
