its a hard choice..but in the end..its more bang for the buck..if only the mini was at at least 10 gigs...sigh...

While I love the design of the mini, I would definitely use the extra space for more than just music files so I'd want the 15gig, i mean its still freakishly small.

if cost wasnt an issue i would have a 40gig iPod, i have the 15 right now, and i am realizing its full potential...i would rather have as much space as possible, if i merely wanted a music player the mini would be adaquite, but not perfect because of how much music i do have

Bigger is better.

I'm throwing my vote on the 15GB as well. I actually don't like the minis. I dunno why.

I would like to respectfully point out that price ISN'T an issue as it stands. The two models are $50 apart, and I don't think that anyone who can shell at $250 for an iPod will hesitate at spending $50 more.

Same here. I'd use it as a FireWire HD.

iPod mini.... I just sold my 10 GB g3 for an iPod mini, and I think I made the right decision. It would be different if I had more than 4GB of music, but I don't.

If price weren't an issue I'd get both. If I could only have one or the other I'd go with the 15GB because I use it as a hard drive and the files I have on it are too big for the mini.

How can you say such a thing? In electronics its all about size... SMALLER is better.

It's all about style over substance.

definitely the ipod, because the size difference for me isn't that big of a deal that i'd rather have the larger ipod. more space, bigger screen, and easier to hold and navigate.

i voted 15GB, but the mini is so sexy, and cool looking, while i already have a 15gb, i voted mini.

I'd take a mini. This is a PORTABLE music player. The small difference in size between the mini and the regular is a BIG difference when it is in your pocket. This is made to carry around, and I think the mini is approaching (or is exactly) the ideal size for such a device. Plus, the colors are sweet.

The votes show that there is still a market for both size iPods.

iPod Mini as I already have a 40 gig iPod Heh, I was debating on it until I read your post. Then I remembered that I have a 20GB :p

Seeing as the mini is about the same size as a Sony Ericsson T68, it would fit perfectly in almost any of my pockets. So mini + the 20GB I already have :d

it's all about the mini.

to the people who use their ipods primarily as hard drives: you can get a 250gig internal IDE hard drive from best buy for half the cost of a 40 gig ipod.

to the people who think they need more than 4gb of space for just music: how can you actually have a need for 4 gigs of music? personally i'd hate to have to scroll through that many artists to find the artist i want to listen to. 4 gigs is about 1000 songs, roughly 4000 minutes. you could listen to songs continuously for nearly 3 days and not listen to the same song twice. is it really necessary to have more music at a time than that? if you get tired of a song, all you to do is remove it and put another song in its place.

to the people who say bigger is better: i beg to differ. i believe the trend in laptops, cell phones, PDAs, etc, has been to reduce size, not increase it.

since 15 GB isnt enough to hold my collection anyway.. id go for the mini.

Apr 13, 2004, 08:38 PM
Probably the mini...not because I think it's a better player but because I think Apple ruined the iPod design when they moved the buttons to the top. It was much better when they were centered around the scroll wheel, and the mini captures that original design. Now, if I could take the 2nd Generation iPod or the iPod mini, I'd take the 2G without a second thought.

I new that the iPod would win because of so many people who are bigger is better. I once rigged a walkman to run off of D Cells because they cost the same as AA's (about) and lasted so much longer (days of continuous play!!!)

Size is not a major factor for me and niether is style. My "style" is cargo shorts and a t-shirt.

I voted 4 GB, but that's because I already have the 15 GB, and although I adore it to death, I'm not sure what I'd do with another. It's not like I can combine the two for a surround sound expirience or anything. Although...

Now, with a mini sidekick, I could keep the 15 GB on my Mac most of the time and run regular backups to it, while I keep my favorite tunes on the mini and bury it in my pocket. When I hit the road, though, I can load up my music on the 15 GB, and leave the mini at home. It's all about the diversity of great options, not just how many GBs you can have in your pants at once.

Right now, that scenario is sounding almost good enough to order a mini. If only cost weren't a concern (if it were an option, I'd pick C, the $250).

I already have a 15 gig and use it every day to go to work. Got 10 gig of music on it. The size is small enough but smaller would be finer off course.

Now only if they made 40gig iPod minis!

The 15 GB iPod can be used to boot your Mac, a mini can't.

I don't even have 4GB of music, so I would use my iPod as an emergency boot drive and as a backup of important files as well as a music player.

I'm waiting until "Home-on-iPod" becomes a reality.

Mini for me.

I've got a 2nd-gen 10 GB iPod now, and it doesn't fit in my purse or most pockets. I've also noticed that while I like the theory of carrying my entire music collection (not even 6 GB yet!) around at all times, just in case I should have a burning need to listen to that one obscure song or artist I haven't heard in years, in practice I only actually listen to one or two playlists at a time. So size is much more a consideration, and every little bit would help.

I also like to keep my iPod hidden, and press the buttons through my pocket fabric, which isn't possible with the touch-sensitive buttons on the current iPods.

Now if they'd just make minis in something other than those retro-esque pastels. *blech*

I'm somewhat surprised how many people did vote for the iPod mini. For me, I prefer more disk space. Already, I've put 5 GB of music on my iPod, with another several hundred megabytes of back-up files. Having more disk space is useful to back up files for those without other means at the current time.

It is somewhat amusing to see that 4 GB or 15 GB or 40 GB just isn't enough anymore. When I bought my first iMac, it had a 4 GB hard drive, which was twice the size of my PC's hard drive. At the time, that was a huge amount of space...especially since I only had one game for my Mac ( Quest For Glory V ). Also around that time, my girlfriend and I had put in three hard drives into her PC, and we were up to a whopping 14 GB of space! Wow! My main Mac also has 3 HD and totals over 60 GB of space, more than 4 times what that PC had, and 15 times more than my original iMac. Now look how we are toting around 4-40GB hard drives in our iPods, which are quite tiny.

I have 36 gigs of mp3s and aac's on my 40Gb iPod, which is pretty sweet. According to iTunes it's over a month of continuous music, now I just need to go through and sort out some of the bad, so I can use my iPod as my home directory _someday_

I'm not an iPod owner right now, but when I do get one, I wouldn't go with the mini. I only need 4GB to store all my music, but I'd be using it as an external FW hard drive also.

considering i already have a 15g ipod, the $250 for the ipod mini makes cost an issue for me.

from my limited amount of time with a minipod, i found i like it. it feels much more solid than the ipod, and the clickwheel is pretty nice too. I'd like to see at very least the one-piece body on the next generation of ipods. the only bad side to the solid body, at least in the mini, is how hazardous the disassembly process is.

I say the 15G not because I want to have all my music with me, rather I'd like an option to back up all my music files that doesn't consist of sending them all to my mother's iMac via the router.

I actually prefer the look and feel of the smoooooth white iPod over the mini, which I, in my sole subjective opinion, find less pleasing to the touch. Of course, if cost wasn't an issue I'd get both.

I voted for the 15 gig iPod because it could be used with the rumored "Home on iPod" (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/12/20031201201335.shtml), which the mini probably couldn't, at least for my home folder.

>> If cost wasn't an issue, which would you prefer?

It should be, "If cost WEREN'T an issue...!" It's a subjunctive clause, so the poll-taker should have used "weren't," not "wasn't."

WRONG: "Damn, I wish I was your lover." -Sophie B. Hawkins
RIGHT: "If I were a rich man." -Tevye, "Fiddler on the Roof"

iPod mini b/c I just bought a 40GB iPod.....and I've had a 20, 10, 5 (all original designs)....so naturally 4 would have to come in somewhere. Plus I'd really like to have a smaller iPod to take with me to play basketball and run. I worry about somebody bumping into my arm and damaging/getting dirty my 40GB. The minis seem less likely to get dirty and scratched up.
