I borrowed someone's iPod over the weekend.
I connected it to computer in order to copy all the music files using third party software (PodView)

It copied a couple of gigs, and a few minutes later the process stopped suddenly. The program closed and i got the typical message you get when an App unexpectedly quits.

I thought nothing of it... until i noticed all the files on the iPod were deleted.
I started stressing but realized that the files were actually still in the iPod, the iPod just didn't recognize them. I know this because when i went into Settings-About it said that there were 7.7GB of memory used up. It classified it as 'other' but i know that it is the music files.

Does anyone know how to get the music files and fix this problem before my friend finds out??

try ipoddisk
It will launch a virtual disk image of any connected iPods and let you browse by song/artist/album/playlist within the Finder. Drag and drop!
It can only extract, though, not add into an iPod.

Then again, some sort of recovery scheme like yours may be beyond its capabilities. I recommend using diskwarrior on the iPod, and possibly reinstalling iTunes(after backing up your current library folder).

copying music from someone else's iPod is piracy. We aren't suposed to help you pirate music here.

It appears the dangers of copyright infringement are not simply to be found in the grasp of the RIAA....

I hope you have an understanding friend.
