2g Iphone with pay as you go 3g sim?

I can get a 2g iphone cheap I would like to know if I have a 3g pay as you go simcard can i use it with a 2g iphone??

A 3g card will work in a 2g phone but obviously you will not get 3g services. I use an O2 sim which is 3g in a 2g iPhone and have done for months with no problems. (Remember - 2g/3g might not be your issue. Will your operators sim card work in the phone i.e. is the phone unlocked if necessary?)
