The lastest eMac 1.25GHz with USB 2.0 is very very cool.

But one thing keeps me from buying it right away.
The speaker grills are not removable anymore.
eMac doesn't look cool with the speaker grills attached.

the speakers in eMacs are horrible.

I used to have one, and whenever you turned the volume up it caused MAJOR ripples in the screen because the magnets from the powerful 16-watt speakers screws with the CRT.

i did call and complain to apple so they sent me free creature speakers. (after about a month back and forth to apple executive relations with me saying that's a design flaw and i want my money back, and them saying that their engineers say it's "normal")

I sold the eMac, now i've got an iBook G4, and am never gonna look back :D

NICE... It makes me wonder if I could call and complain about the sound of my future Powerbook and they would send ME free creature speakers...LOVELY idea.

Yeah but having seen kids working with computers in school, I can completely understand them wanting the grills built in.

yeh, I guess I'll have to live with it. since eMac is targeted at Schools.

But I still think eMac looks cooler without the grills on.

The whole eMay design keeps me from buying it... it might be good for hospitals, but one of that on my pretty desk? No way...

(This is a good thing because this way I can save for a Rev.B PowerBook G5 ;) )

Well, maybe you could just hook up external speakers and cover the grills with Type R stickers. Then everyone will think you have a G5. :p

i would wait for the imac update. it is coming you know here is why

the processor on the emac has 512! l2 cache that means it is using the new processor that is in the powerbooks

while the imacs are still using the old ones

well, i think the grilles on make it look better, but hey, i just bought an iBook, so what do i care?

I second the above poster who stated that the speakers are too powerful for the CRT. there is some serious visual distortion that occurs at high volumes (i have experience with emacs)

Note: The eMac (ATI Graphics) and eMac (USB 2.0) have the same external design as the previous eMac. The only change made to the plastics is that the speaker grills are no longer removable. This is to prevent damage to the speakers in classrooms or similar high-use areas.

This problem has been there like forever :) I own a 1999 iMac DV SE (I think the first with H/K speakers), and back in the days they told me it was normal, couldn't do anything about it... well, I have my Mac plugged to my stereo anyways, so I don't really care... ;)

i dont know how this is possible...but here goes.

about an hour ago i took the grills off my emac.

since then i have had a noticeable reduction in the screen shimmer associated with high volumes coming from the speakers.

i dont see why removing the grill would have an effect on this, but it has.

HAHA, I agree. Although it's a darn good computer for the price.

Buy the eMac, get a USB extension wire for the keyboard and a VGA extension for a monitor.

Place the eMac in the next room, or in the corner under your desk (making sure there's good ventilation).

Get a pretty LCD monitor, possibly with a white frame (like the Sony SDM series) to coordinate with the keyboard and mouse.

Would that be good enough for your desk? :)

I agree. But if it was a better looking computer, who would want to pay for the overpriced 15'' iMac G4? :-P

Well, the reason they are so ugly and heavy is so that some kid won't pick it up and chuck it at his teacher because his mother forgot to give him his medication. I really think Apple should use this tidbit of information in their sales information.

"Teachers, have you ever been caught up in Little Jimmy's temper tantrum? Have long hospital stays and rehabilitation caused you to miss work? Well, this won't happen with the eMac! Not only have our engineers made a quality machine for the education market, they have designed them to be so awkward and heavy that only the strongest of kids will be able to use one to bludgeon you to death. It's just another way we at Apple Computers bring you peace of mind!"

Whether it's the Pro speakers on the iMac, the built-in ones on the eMac, or even on the MDD PowerMac, they get poked and such and are horribly bent.

I find that the screen on my eMac only shimmers when you have it at the MAX volume only. And at that volume it begins to like shake the walls and wake the dead anyway, so it's not an issue.

I kind of wish I had one of the new eMacs...but hell, I've had this one for like 5 months now, and it's well broken in....besides, it's just a freaking extra 250mhz. Big woop.
