I can't see MacWorld existing beyond this one with no Apple involvement.

I've never been to one - but I would imagine that less people from other countries would now travel to SF for this event. I would expect locals to attend.

I for sure will attend if it goes ahead, which is looking quite possible from this e-mail.

Yeah, this will probably be the last one, or at least the last one I'll be paying attention to. Without the Stevenote to "rally the troops", there's not much point.

IDG announced today on its Macworld Expo page (http://www.macworldexpo.com/) and in an e-mail to previous attendees that the 2010 event will take place from February 9th through 13th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.IDG World Expo announced today that Macworld will be moving from its traditional January event dates to February 9 - 13, 2010. The location will remain at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, CA.

As we began the planning process for 2010, the Mac community - exhibitors, attendees, media and fans of the show - made it clear that February would be a more ideal time to hold the event, so we listened. The Conference programs are scheduled for Tuesday through Saturday, February 9 - 13 and the Expo will be held Thursday through Saturday, February 11-13th.Apple previously announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/16/apple-jobs-will-not-present-at-apples-final-macworld-keynote/) that 2009 would be their final year participating in Macworld Expo.

or just on their own internal timelines for announcing new products - their stated reason for not participating anymore. it just didn't make sense to keep shelling out big bucks for an outdated system.

Of course. It doesnt really matter in the end where they release new products, it just matters that they do. I will still be excited.

You answered your own question. Trade shows are pretty much dying off all over. There just isn't a compelling case to be made for them anymore, now that we've got this new-fangled intarweb.

Yet there are still many many many yearly events that diehards love (think trek convention types) and go to. Attendance may fall off a bit and the event may not be a massive to do anymore, but many of them are surviving in smaller forms.

I don't think Macworld will die off entirely, just change a bit to accomodate its new role.

Or maybe not. Maybe there is a common ground that the Die-Hards will still go, but it will just become smaller.

Thats my final answer.

Expect dozens of vendors selling iPod accessories...

Outside of that, nothing interesting.

They'll be begging people to take their free expo passes.

It has already been smaller since 9/11.

Before 9/11 the expo took up BOTH the north and south halls.

Vendors decided at the time to focus on using the web for customer interaction.

Macworld New York/Boston died after Apple pulled out. Apple Expo Paris was cancelled this year after Apple pulled out.

IDG certainly has their hands full trying to keep this going.

It'll look the like the Zune section at Best Buy . . . tumbleweed, a lot of dust, and the faint sound of windchimes. Once in a while someone will pull up asking for directions or to use a phone.

That's about it.

too many exhibitors and attendees prolly jumped to CES. moving macworld a month later gives exhibitors and attendees the ability to attend both rather than having to choose one or the other.

Not so much for the nuts-and-bolts developers, but if Macworld were to become much more of an educational conference, I would be willing to send employees. I'd like to go also, but if it starts to look like something that could boost our productivity and take our services in a new direction, it might be just the thing for our people.

Big companies are pulling out of trade shows because the shows aren't helping their bottom line. But for small companies that may not get a lot of exposure, it still could be a good opportunity to display their stuff. I think it has a chance to survive in a smaller format, with Mac diehards attending and not as much press, but still covered by the Mac-specific mags and blogs.

Of course some of the luster will be lost without Apple there but nonetheless, if Apple stays the course and sticks to a regular product rollout schedule there is no reason why tons of companies that make accessories and software can't be there to ply there wares after a January product / software rollout.

Expect a great explosion of accessories no one has even thought of making/using yet now that API's that allow access to the dock are out:cool:

Makes perfect sense. It would get steamrolled trying to complete against CES w/o an Apple Keynote. The MW organizers would be smart to transform the show into a WWDC for everyone else type of event. And center it around the Mac since Apple is content to focus on the iPhone since it's got more growth potential at the moment.

People will attend, but it'll never get the same volume of attendees nor quality presenters and vendors. Without Apple a good bit of the "shine" falls off Macworld for me.

At least the mag is still pretty good.

Thats exactly what I was saying. In will no longer be MASSIVE, but still a sizeable event, pretty much the main Mac centered trade show out there.

It is the main event right?

I should clarify.

Before 9/11, the north and south halls would be FULL.

I mean completely wall to wall.

After 9/11 the expo starting putting up small walls around the booth area to hide all of the empty space.

MacWorld has already been dead show since 2001.

It might survive as a smaller, west-coast US trade-show but certainly won't drag in the press, bloggers and apple fanboys (myself included) like in the past.

SF is a long way from Sydney but last year I had planned to attend pretty much just to go to a Steve-note. Family problems made me cancel (fortunately as it turned out!) but I certainly shan't make the effort now that Apple aren't there.

Without the slightly crazy fans like me, and the press and bloggers... it'll just be another local show.

You are making an illogical conclusion. What does 9/11 have to do with MacWorld? Nothing.

I was at MWNY in '01. Apple was there. It was the deadest, most boring MW I'd ever been too. In fact I only had an exhibit hall pass but the keynote overflow areas were so empty they let everyone in. Of course the keynote was pretty lame too, especially for a SteveNote.

I think closer to the truth is that 2001 was an Apple post-iMac buzz, pre-iPod. The products were rather boring and app development was stagnating. Then by the time Apple found itself again with the iPod the Internet 2.0 was up and in action. There was no real reason to go cross country to find out the latest in Apple wares when you could do it from your home computer. You could even watch the SteveNote.

Trade shows in general are withering (E3, Comdex, Summer CES) because of the way people do business and get their information now, not because of 9/11.

I'm not intending to argue against your main points here - but I thought it was worth pointing out that CES is having its own struggles drawing attention.

I'm sure its organizers are very happy to hear that Apple's no longer involved with MWSF; but much the trade press (that I've read, anyway) seems to think CES is going to be in trouble soon.

I really think even the biggest trade shows are finding it hard to stay relevant anymore. Maybe some of the giant, narrow-target shows will continue to do well (e.g. Photokina).

I heard they are moving the show to a local Denny's.

At least at Denny's I'd feel like I accomplished something by eating. I used to love to go to the PC Trade shows that came around and I was THIS CLOSE to finally going to Macworld Expo 2009. I am so glad I didn't shell out the bucks to fly across the country to it. I'm sure there's lots to see and all the iPhone and iPod accessories I would ever want to look at, but without Apple and Steve at the keynote, I'd be better off shopping online.

Like I'd ever run into Leo Laporte or Kevin Rose there anyway!

Just stating the observation after attending Macworld for over 15 years.

That's when Mac vendors started puling out and MacWorld started becoming an iPod accessor flea market.
