Skype, Inc. (http://www.skype.com) has just released their official Skype application for the iPhone and iPod touch. Skype is a very popular voice-over-IP (VOIP) and instant messaging application that allows you to make phone calls over the internet. CNet spent some time (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12261_7-10206786-51.html) with the release version of the iPhone app: Skype's screens are well organized and use the iPhone's ability to add filters, for instance, to sort your contacts alphabetically, or by who's online. There's chatting as well, though Skype's flagship feature is its VoIP calling that's free to other Skype users and an inexpensive per-minute fee to landlines. Calls on Skype for iPhone work only if you're in range of a Wi-Fi network, so your call quality will in part be at the mercy and strength of wireless networks nearby--calls will not work over the cell phone network on the iPhone (but chatting will.) As restricted by Apple, the voice-over-IP phone calls will only work over Wi-Fi and not over the cellular connection. iPod Touch owners with a microphone can also take advantage of the VOIP calling.

How lame of apple to approve the Ap without cellular connectivity. We are being charged a fee for data use but obviosly apple and more probably AT&T is limiting how much data can actually be used. AT&T has had several years to prepare their network for all of this increased activity.
I guess we can all guess that the sling player will be approved as wifi only. Really just pathetic.

My iPhone hard-crashed for the first time ever on the first call I made with Skype. Let's hope this isn't an omen.
Update: I'm finding it VERY buggy. It's crashing constantly. I'm on a 1st iPhone with version 2.2 OS.

Not necessarily. I belive the orb app allows connections over 3g and that doesn't require any additional hardware except your computer. The slingbox requires separate hardware.
I don't have a problem with AT&T's rules. They would obviously not want you to use a competing product on their own network. You can say that you paid for the data but you also signed a contract with certain rules as well. You can always jailbreak your phone and use voipover3g.

isn't there a way with jailbreaking to trick your phone into thinking its on a wifi connection when you are really using cellular data?

It has crashed on me about 5 times in 5 minutes, just trying to use the chat feature. I am on original iPhone, latest official (2.2.1?) firmware.
Nice it is able to access the iphone address book (is this available through standard API). Unable to test calls as away from home.
Seems someone in QC dropped the ball on this one, looking forward to the bug-fix release.

Mar 30, 2009, 11:54 PM
lets hope some of it is from the system being overwhelmed but if not how you do you spend months and months on an app and this is what you release. it crashes everytime i try to do something other than a test call.

Has anyone ever tried Skype over one of common (ie Netgear, Belkin, etc) WiFi phones that are marketing as compatible with the Skype service?
We are looking to cancel our landline but want the convenience of a wireless phone. Cell service is poor at our office so we need some lines out besides cellular.
Any comments based in actual experience welcomed please!!

I wonder if jailbreaking has anything to do with the crashes? I've noticed after a few mods the phone has a tendency to be a bit more quirky. I've found the whole process to be a bit overrated really.
Oh and yes skype crashes for me too.

Talking via my Skype Out account right now to a land line phone.
West coast to east coast over WiFi.
Working Great. -- 5 minutes -- no issues. :)
Quality not quite as clear as a land line, but very good and useable. Destroys Fring!
This could be the App I've been waiting for.

There appears to be a bug in the software - to the end-users advantage. If you create a new Skype account, then login using the app you can make free calls. Well, that was my experience.

I hate Skype since I think the design is pretty poor and the call quality is terrible, but for some reason I am excited for this app. I think it'll make some things much easier when calling abroad or calling home.
My hope is Skype gets serious about call quality. Video is nice and all, but if they are serious about taking on the phone companies and cracking the enterprise in a serious way, they need to get call quality up dramatically.
All things considered, this is a great addition to my iPhone.

This just makes me wonder as we go forward into the future - let's assume AT&T doubles or triples the speed of the data network, increases the data fee and says you don't have to have voice service anymore ...

I just downloaded via iTunes, created account on iPhone and made a test call with my friend with no problems at all. No crashes. Call quality was great.
I agree that it's kind of silly. It's main function is to allow you to use your phone as a phone. There are plenty other places to chat for free (gmail chat).
But I also see how it could be very useful in some situations, i.e. free international calls w/ friends and family.
If we get a forward facing camera in the next iPhone this app will really take off!

For most people... no.
However, I live in Tokyo, the cheapest way to call a landline/mobile phone in another country is on Skype, considerably cheaper than calling cards as well which cost about $20 for only 35minutes worth of calls, keeping in mind there is more lag than on skype.
in saying that, i hope the quality of skype on iphone is equal to skype on my pc.

T-Mobile wants to block Skype connections over their network. That doesn't necessarily mean that it will not be available in the app store (unless they have an agreement with Apple over App Store contents). In addition it doesn't mean that it will not function over any non-T-Mobile wifi connection if you do have it on your phone.
You shouldn't be angry at Apple, but at the T-Mobile bastards here in Germany and The Netherlands.

Exactly, I don't know what all the excitement is about. This may make some phone calls cheaper than normal use, but this is hardly revolutionary, especially since you can't use it over 3G (but I could never see AT&T allowing people to bypass them over their very own network).
However, I could see how this would be very useful for people with Touches.

Too bad I've got the 1st gen iPod Touch 32Gb... but still more ram than an iPhone ;)
Please look up what RAM is. The 32GB is the flash memory, not the RAM. The RAM on these devices is a mere few megabytes.

Back on topic,
Do you really need a phone on your phone to call someone on a phone on their phone?????
Calling from Europe to (for example) the US using skype is either free or very cheap while making a direct call it's very very expensive. So yeah, I could really use skype :) Don't tell me you didn't think about that?
Please look up what RAM is. The 32GB is the flash memory, not the RAM. The RAM on these devices is a mere few megabytes.
You're right, my mistake. Let's use the general term 'memory' instead ;)

Using the War Department's 3G iPhone and Skype is working just fine. Little bit of an echo in the beginning, but that's b/c the iPhone was next to my MBP. Tried some Skype chat and it was blazing fast w/o LAG. WiFi was totally uninterrupted and clear voice calls to other Skype members. My 3g JB iPhone couldn't even get past the login part. I pressed one key and it went crash. Hopefully there's a fix in the works for us JBers. I like the new app a bunch.....:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Let's not. Let's use the correct term: "storage" instead.
That way, we can use the term: "memory" to mean RAM, of which these devices have 128 MB, I believe.

My thoughts too... it's like having a phone that you can call people from, but nobody can call you - unless they happen to call when you've got the Skype app running.
I was going to add that hopefully this would be sorted with OS3, but wouldn't running Skype as a background app be a battery hog?

Wow, seriously, not available in Canada? The ONLY country in which it is not available?
Would anyone be able to send me the IPA file so that I could install? I'd really like to be able to use it on my jailbroken phone.
Also, it seems many people do not realize the significance of having the official Skype for the iPhone. First, it's a way to make FREE phone calls to other phones with Skype (not just the iPhone, BTW; it's been around on WM for a while now). Not everyone has unlimited minutes, but with Skype this isn't a worry. Second, this is a must-have for international calls to other computers/phones with Skype.
And finally, there is a Cydia app that tricks the iPhone into thinking that it is always on WiFi so that we potentially could use Skype over 3G (without having 3.0). Has anyone tested this yet? I'd be very curious to see if it works.
Thanks.

I might be mistaken but RAM is Random Access Memory. The Flash memory in the iPhone is a type of RAM. What he said was correct.
RAM loses it’s stored data when it has no power supply, flash storage does not. Otherwise everyone would be having to sync their iPods and iPhones every time the battery died. They clearly have different uses, and their uses and productivity differ greatly, so I feel that it is incorrect to use "RAM" and "flash" interchangeably.

Volatile memory loses it's stored data when it has no power supply - traditionally, volatile memory has been used as RAM, but they're not the same thing. The ROM/RAM definitions came about in a different era of computing, when memory tended to be either one or the other. Today's solid state storage devices don't really fit into those definitions any more, so I don't think any use is technically right or wrong.
That said, I do cringe with the growing tendency for people to say that their computer has got "500 gigabytes of memory".
Sorry. OT.

I just found out that Skype is working on the German 3G-Network of T-Mobile with iPhone OS 3.0 Beta installed.
Does for me, too
App works fine. No crashes. Most crashes are actually a result of the poor quality of the iPhone's API implementations, not the 3rd parties. Even Safari crashes using the same software. Apple need to do some serious debugging on their code.
I don't get why the service is limited to WiFi. Most people use Skype for international calls, which they wouldn't be making on their mobile, so carriers aren't really losing any money.
I'd also like the ability to view someone else's video from my iPhone. I get that it can't send video, but surely it can receive it. That can hog the data network, so they can restrict that to WiFi.
Oh, and you Flash RAM people have got it totally wrong. Flash, like IDE hard drives, are storage. RAM is Memory. They are different.

Just tested it out and it works pretty good. It seems a bit slow in retrieving the contact list, which seemed strange considering I'm on a fast WiFi network.
One thing I can not stand is how contacts are managed by Skype. I installed the Mac version first to import contacts from my Address Book and can't believe it makes a new listing for each phone number. What is up with that? This is something that really needs to be improved. Also it doesn't differentiate between first names and sur names. So once you import John Smith into Skype he will then appear under J where on the iPhone's Contact app he appears under S.
That's my biggest complaint with the app and probably why I deleted the Mac version way back when.

This just makes me wonder as we go forward into the future - let's assume AT&T doubles or triples the speed of the data network, increases the data fee and says you don't have to have voice service anymore ...
If I am at home, I can understand canceling my home landline and using Skype. But if I'm on a cell phone, LOL,
I already have a phone. (can someone please explain)
I'll bite.
I can call America from Japan for TWO CENTS per minute using skype. Using my old DoCoMo provider here in Japan, a standard call to America was nearly SEVEN DOLLARS per minute. Do the math and you see how terribly, terribly useful skype is.
The purpose of skype is the insanely cheap price for international calls.

I'm really tired of being singled out and controlled by Apple as an iPhone user.
Its pretty despicable that this app is limited to Wifi. Nothing should be limited to Wifi. This is the point of paying for constant, "hi-speed" data. Doesn't matter if an app comes out that is suddenly "too useful".
What difference does it make, anyway? Its not like I can cancel/lower my voice plan and just keep 3G/Skype. I have the lowest plan as it is!

I have the $60/year Skype plan that gives me unlimited calls to regular phones, and it is WAY better quality than the free computer to computer calls. I use it all the time for international calls since I'm an American living in Indonesia. There are already Skype phones that connect to wifi networks, but most decent ones are $100 on up. I was looking at getting one (since calling from my MBP all the time gets annoying), but now this is one more reason to get an iPhone. I don't have one yet, but this app alone, if all the bugs get worked out, would be HUGE for me, especially for convincing my wife to let me get an iPhone!

Besides lower-cost international calling from your home country, doesn't this pretty much reduce the need for yellowsnow unlocking for foreign travel? Receiving calls would be an issue but as long as there's wifi you should be able to make them and not incur insane roaming charges. (I'm in Canada right now and have airport mode + data roaming off, but wifi enabled.) Seems pretty good to me...

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/09/03/18/thumbtacks.now.shipping/
I would think that I'd be able to use that mic with headphones though. At least that's what I was hoping. Perhaps Skype's support can respond for sure. Though I won't hold my breath.

For some reason, none of my skype contacts appeared when I installed it on my iphone and signed in. I have about 120 contacts in my Skype address book on my laptop and I would have assumed they would have synced. Did I miss a step?

Exactly, I don't know what all the excitement is about. This may make some phone calls cheaper than normal use, but this is hardly revolutionary, especially since you can't use it over 3G (but I could never see AT&T allowing people to bypass them over their very own network).
However, I could see how this would be very useful for people with Touches.
You should look into the bold a little more closely. Skype can save users thousands of dollars on international calls, and despite the fact that you could never see it, Skype works over 3G on hacked and 3.0b iPhones....atm.

I have a second gen iPod touch since I am stuck on Verizon for now (which isn't too bad). I spent a little while last night talking to a person on skype, it worked great, I have the iPhone headset with built in mic, which works with the second gen touch. In response to a question above, your skype contacts show up under contacts, do get to all other contacts, hit the dial pad then contacts button and all your peeps show up to call using skype credits. I think this app is pretty sweet if you have an ipod touch, i am around wifi about 95% of my day...

Just downloaded the app and it seems to work well for me. My wife and I use Skype to keep in touch with her parents and other family members in Europe...this App is a must-have for us. I think it's going to be really great when 3.0 software comes out...that way you won't have to logout of Skype when u use the other features of your iPhone.
Now when is Slingbox player coming out?.... *impatiently tapping foot*

Yeh that rule is in place for a reason—and it's not because cell phones are dangerous (mythbusters pretty much busted that one).
I don't have a problem with people staying connected—it's the jackasses who feel the need to have a 30 minute conversation, seemingly at the top of their lungs (and people on cell phones always seem to talk a lot louder).

Why are people still surprised that skype and other VOIP solutions are blocked over 3G? I just don't understand. Apple has said from day 1 they will allow VOIP over WiFi and not over the cellular network. With the current model it just doesn't make sense for the carriers to allow it over their data network. I too can't wait for the day I just pay for bandwidth and use it for whatever I want, but that isn't going to be anytime soon. Think about how long it took the music industry to get to DRM free digital downloads. These things take years, which sucks, but that's how it is.

I wonder if jailbreaking has anything to do with the crashes? I've noticed after a few mods the phone has a tendency to be a bit more quirky. I've found the whole process to be a bit overrated really.
Oh and yes skype crashes for me too.
Im running the application on 3 non broken iphones and same process for them all.... crashes,freezes.....
So I doubt its that , I think the application needs a few adjustments to make it run more smoother. Who knows, maybe its sucking up a lil more cpu.......

You got it right on the ball with that one. This app makes it easier for me, now I do not have to pay cell phone roaming fees when I have to call home, when I am out of the country. I would just buy some Skype credits, and use this iPhone application and Wi-Fi to call home at MUCH LOWER rates...as for people calling me....I am on vacation buddy!

Google for Skype-v1.0.1.ipa find the file, drag it into your itunes and add the applications that way.
It's simple, Rogers told Apple no, and contractually Apple has to comply.
Rogers said they had no problem allowing it. It wasn't released due to a patent that someone owns in canada (I'm guessing it is how to handle VOIP phonecalls on a portable device or some stupid broad patent). I downloaded the .ipa file and added it to my iphone that way and it works fine on rogers.
Rogers, which is the exclusive Canadian carrier for the iPhone, said it would not seek to block its customers from using the service.

You know I travel quite a bit, and if you can't do it over IM then tough.
Thankfully AA will be blocking the ports needed for voip, just imagine everyone trying to speak louder than the person sitting next to them to be heard on the other end ... it would be madness.
IM & email should be the only method for conversation @ 30,000 ft end of story.
If they allow voip, they had better allow tazers for passengers to self regulate the situation....

Chaim Haas, a public relations representative acting on behalf of Skype, said the application is available in every country in which the iPhone is on sale and in which Apple has an iTunes Store — with the exception of Canada.
Haas said this is because of patent-licence restrictions but would not elaborate except to specify that it is a patent issue related to Skype, not Apple.

I am wondering if it isn't a patent problem but infact the enhanced 911 rules that VOIP phones must follow in Canada. The CRTC started enforcing that VOIP phones dial 911 in the same way all landline phones and cell phones do and go directly to the nearest 911 center.
But yea, search around the net and you will find it (watch for safari adding a .zip to the end of the .ipa file). Or use the american store if you have a gift certificate.

Hopefully this gets addressed with Push Notification Service.. In theory, an incoming call should "wake" Skype up and pop up a notification that you have an incoming call coming. I don't know whether all this can happen fast enough to be useable..
