AppleCare for AppleTV?

It's $49 - I still have time to purchase it for the two that I own (160GB each). What are your thoughts?

I bought it mainly because I'm rough on my Apple remotes. I've already had two replaced.

Other than laptops which usually have to ensure an incredible amount of abuse, I am not a proponent of extended warranties. Most electronic devices fail early in their lives. I think the one year hardware warranty on an AppleTV is ample (I use a Harmony remote to control the proliferation of remote controls).

My reason for consideration of AppleCare is hard drive failure.

Hard drive failure is probally a good reason to buy it. You can replace the hard drive easily in the Apple TV, but if your original hard drive fails it becomes complicated since you can't just clone the special partitions needed to get the Apple TV to function.

Also, I bought my AppleCare for the Apple TV on eBay for around $20.

It looks like you can get it as cheap as $12 now.

Yes, they're legit (although you should check the seller's feedback, etc). I do know from previous posts by Mac resellers here at Macrumors that AppleCare and MobileMe have huge mark-ups in terms of cost to the reseller vs. actual consumer pricing.

They may just be wanting to clear inventory (how popular can AppleCare for Apple TV actually be anyway) or they're selling it at a much lower mark-up than the Apple Store.

Who knows. Who cares. If it works, it works.

I picked up AppleCare from a seller on eBay for a recently-purchased iMac and had no problems with registration. I'd recommend taking a look at their feedback before deciding to buy from them.

I believe that's the cost Apple charges to resellers, plus some variable amount of profit to the reseller. The cost should give you an idea about the potential failure rate of the item being covered by the warranty.

I bought AppleCare on Ebay for my Macbook and the registration went through without any problems. I paid around $140 where full retail is $249.
