Another experiment in tone-mapping. There's definitely a learning curve. Now I'm noticing the picture looks flatter and less saturated in both FF and Safari 4 than it does in Photomatix, or Pixelmator, or any other image processing software. All on the same display... I set the color gamut to be sRGB when generating the original HDR image before tone mapping, if that makes any difference. There's a lot of tweaking going on...

I agree. The repetition of visual elements combined with the eye-flow of the path and hedge are a beautiful base scene to set the figures against. Wonderful overall unity.

You ask for C & C... so here goes...
I don't understand why you tilted the camera. I don't understand why more than half the image is occupied by an undistinguished stretch of Tarmac. I don't understand why you chopped off half the casino entrance (top right), but included a bit of railing (bottom left). It's presumably the composition you wanted, as it seems you used a tripod. So I'm

Phrasikleia - IIRC, you are in nor cal, where we haven't seen much rain until last night. Are you using a spray bottle / mister type thing? I like the varying size of droplets - which is unlike what one would get from a higher volume stream of water.

Yeah, I started out shooting actual raindrops (following the long rainy period we had in early Spring), but raindrops are always so large and sparse. That can be nice in same cases, but for delicate flower petals, I wanted lots of little tiny droplets. So I bought a really fine-nozzle spray bottle and am having a lot of fun with it. Next I'm going to purchase an eye dropper so I can experiment with large, carefully positioned droplets and reflections in them. :)

Here's a picture I took at the Lincoln Park Zoo here in Chicago today (technically yesterday since it is after midnight). We had our first 80 degree day today and as a bonus I had a vacation day. The wife and I went to the zoo to test out the used (new to me) camera I bought from a friend last week. So here's one of the better shots I had today, it is a warthog that decided to take a mud bath (I think that is normal for them). Enjoy!

Tonemapped w/ 3 RAW (-2, even, +2.) Even firing off a three-shot bracketing burst, there was movement in the water, sometimes a lot of movement in the boats. Using more than a single image is a tricky compromise, but I'm playing around to see where it might be useful... and trying Photomatix out.

It looks as though the focus is behind the biker. Also, the blown-out sky and strong directional lines and ornamentation of the architecture detract from the subject. Perhaps a more shallow DOF would have helped.
Thanks for the info. I definitely had trouble focusing on the biker (though some in the series were a little better than this). I'm not sure I wanted the focus to be solely on the biker, though, I would have liked equal between him and the architecture. A few questions, though:
When you have a moving subject that is going to flit by your viewfinder in only a second or two, and you don't know their distance, how can you get a sharp focus on just them? It doesn't seem like the AF would work b/c they would be through the area the AF is using in a fraction of a second, even if you could hit it at the perfect time.
When you have a small portion of the sky that is grey and the rest of the picture is fairly dark, how do you keep from having the sky blown-out?
Anyway, thanks for the C&C, sorry it took me so long to get back to the forum. I went to a butterfly house the other day, so I'll be posting some macros for a few days.
C&C still welcome :D
I was trying to get the little guy in flight. Image is cropped by almost half the original size to tighten it on him (though it doesn't seem like that much was cut out).

Ja Di KSW - I like the juxtaposition of the biker against the old architecture. I think it is wild. The image could go for a bit of tweaking though... hope you don't mind my interpretation. I'll remove it if you find it in bad taste. This was done really quickly with PS, without much precision on the mask for the fake DOF.

Full pallet vs Web pallet would be my guess.

It was set on a bench. I am obviously not a pro. I thought it was a nice picture. In the fall i plan on starting at the university for photography. So im just trying to get as familiar with my camera and learn as much on my own. I visit this thread everyday and most of the pics are awe inspiring. Like with all those butterfly pics, they were amazing. Hopefully after a few classes my posts will be on par with yours and the likes that frequent this thread...

Bravo on taking classes, you obviously have more than just an interest, but a talent and and eye for the interesting as well. There's probably a lot you will learn from all the Pros that post here. I'm such an amateur, that I never even take my little camera out of the case, but I love studying these photos everyday. It's become a bit of a daily ritual. Maybe, I'll get inspired. In the meantime, I love looking at everyone else's work.

I completely understand. I actually want to be able to make money off of my work someday. I also visit this thread daily. I am on my lunch at work right now. I am hoping to have time to edit and post a new pic up, but we shall see. Also, most of my better work either contain marijuana or some form of paraphernalia, so I dont think this is the proper place to post them, but a few of those pics are very well received on flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/27399479@N02/).
Ran out of time, will post up later tonight. :)

Hi mcavjame. I like it! I might have blurred it a *little* bit less, but it's definitely better than mine. I've actually never owned or even played around with PS :(. Something that probably hurts my pictures. At most I just crop them, and 99% of the time don't even do that.

Absolutely love the light with its flared range of colors and dreamy quality of the sun captured behind the hill. Really nice choice of angle (camera in, or almost right in the grass). The middle field is wonderful.
It's a little left heavy on composition for me, or it may be that the three element (tree, figure, flare) hover near, but don't quite make it to, a thirds point. It would be interesting to see a crop where the figure's head is at the lower left thirds point.

Specifically I used, the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 E series lens from the 70s. It was a budget lens, even back then, so it doesn't have that "anti-flare" coating stuff. I'm not sure the same kind of effect would happen with newer glass. I'll have to try that sometime... :P

in post, all I did was up the contrast and play with the curves. to get the colors. Oh! and I burned the mountains a bit (so they weren't completely washed out), and set that layer to soft light.

It's the quality of the natural light that brings out the colour and 'depth' in foliage, stonework, etc. So it's 'natural' in every sense of the word.

All taken in the city of Amsterdam by my Canon Ixus 70. Amazing place if you ever get out there, which I recommend.....I plan on getting my SLR camera, but I am not too sure which one right now. SO I will take a look around these forums to get a good idea.

If you return each day for the next seven days, you'll have them all posted. Patience is a virtue!

We have been having alternating days of unseasonably warm days (28 C) followed by a few days of cold, rainy weather (near 0 C). The heating up and cooling down has made for some extremely high winds. This reinforced cement power pole was part of a domino effect where a tree was uprooted, falling across the power lines, knocking the pole down and a string of adjacent light standards. A rather mundane photo, otherwise.

You could try to get a little more out of what you are using now. One thing that even a consumer level camera should be able to do is adjust white balance for shooting outside. It looks as though it is currently set for incandescent bulb (indoor lighting) which will give a blue cast to the image when you are outside.
I presume the car is an apple red sports car. I'd want to make that pop little. Side by side of the original with a recrop and color adjusted version. Visually, the concrete pole is a problem for me. It tends to grab viewer attention even with the more saturated red.

Anyways, taking a break from the butterflies for a bit. When I left the butterfly house there were some guys playing music. Took a couple quick shots before I put my gear away.

The flowers are inside a DIY lightbox with a single 580 EX II on the right. There was a white reflector on the left and a white background. The high-key effect is primarily lighting. I'd like to say I planned it but it was really a 'mistake' as I was setting up the light and taking some test shots and initially had the flash set too high.

This is a crazy shot! Wow, looks so alien. I definitely like it, and the shallow depth of field letting the legs and whatnot blur out quickly adds to the other worldliness of it. However, I keep bouncing back and forth on the background. I can't decide if the pure white adds to the oddness of the creature or is a distraction. I wonder what it would look like if there was something there just very muted and blurred.

Thanks and I agree with you, the background seriously gave me a headache. And just for kinks, I adjusted the temperature to cold and it look like a frosted grasshopper
Well the photo was shot behind a glass which shows how I got the shot (another reason to bring your dSLR all the time w/ u ;) ) so I actually tried recovering highlights hoping to reduce the white but then the imperfect condition of the glass (scratches and dust) become more visible, hence I opted to leave just as it is.
