What is the mist-like stuff in this photo?

I like this! Very mysterious and unknown. I'll take a guess, smoke from a campfire? :p

Would you believe it's a ghost climbing a tree?? ;) :D

Ok Last shot in the series. This is by far my favorite shot. Let me know what you think!

Definitely more interesting than the others. I think I would crop it to the mouth only because her eyes compete with the lego figure.

And now for something completely different:

http://www.megethos.com/Phrasikleia/WeathervaneOnBlue.jpg

OK, full disclosure: there was a vent in the ground near the tree, and steam was coming out of it.

Are there any rules to these threads?

Phrasikleia: A vent is the last thing I would've thought that was, given that it's next to a tree.

I think the only rule in this thread is "one per day." (Aside from general MR site rules, of course.)

Yeah, I was pretty surprised to find the vent. I've passed through that grove of redwood trees many times and had never noticed it before. It looked completely surreal, so I plopped down the tripod and went at it.

A photo of MY camera, taken with my dad's Lumix DMC FZ18. I was trying to weight the picture to the left to make it feel like the right hand side was drawing the viewer in. I don't know if I was successful but I like it anyway :)

A slightly gloomy looking shot for the start of this month !
I would like to say that this shot was preplanned, that I had wanted to demonstrate the contrasts in the way's we celebrate Life, Death, Birth, and also if your that way inclined Spiritual Rebirth. In reality I was killing time in Glasgow so I walked to the top of the Necropolis looked out over the Cathedral and the Royal Infirmary, seen the moody sky and thought "Hmm could be a nice shot" and clicked ;)

I love these picture of the day threads here, although every month I start out by saying " I'm going to post a picture a day in the picture a day thread" then life intervenes and I'm not on for a fortnight :(

Schoolboy error on the ISO, ALWAYS doing that really annoys me. Should learn to turn it back down after I've finished with it up, or to check before I head out. Spent about 30mins that day wondering why I was struggling not to overexpose everything.......

About the jpg artefacts, I noticed that after converting from a big RAW to a <200k jpg. I've asked on here before, but never got a response - can anybody recommend the right method for uploading a file on here? I always compress them massively because I'm worried about annoying everyone with a massive file. Thanks!

Sure. And thanks for the kind comments.

This is Nichols Ledge, in Vermont. Its 8 vertical images and 6 exposures for each image. The RAW files for each image is processed in Photomatix. (basically just for the clouds) and then saved as a TIFF and stitched together in CS3 where I played with the curves, saturation, and slightly sharpened it. Its quite a process, your basically handling 48 images.

Its still not quite right, I wish I could straighten out that mountain range but it breaks in a way that makes the image look kind of crooked. It looks bad on your thumb size image, the large print should hide it.

The ruins are of a seventeenth century farmhouse, but there may have been buildings on the site going back to the fifteenth century.

Eventually I tried to settle on the flower, being the brightest object but that's not in focus either. I really like what you're going for, though. I'd just prefer it with something that your eye can attach to, or at least have something clearly focused on the track.

Thanks for the compliment... but not so much talent as perhaps years of struggling with tricky lighting scenes. The Pany likes to over-expose by quite a bit in this type of scene, so I try a -3/4 to -1 stop compensation, and then shoot several shots exposing for the brightest part of the sky (usually the sun.) This can give me a fairly dark shot, but keep the highlights in a much more acceptable range. Of course, there's no RAW files with this little LZ8, but a little pp for good measure to bump contrast while still holding highlights down (at least as much as possible) to see what comes out. It's really all just experimenting. Sometimes it works... if I'm lucky. :)

I have to admit, the Oly dSLR system is looking like a cool alternative to the Canon/Nikon mainstream. They've got some good ideas. You made a good choice there.

The ruins of Crackpot Hall... with the best view in the Yorkshire Dales...

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4536/crackpothall.jpg

John, errr... Professor. Of course, I always love your landscape style - very timeless feeling, lovely colors, sometimes popping, but other times subtle, almost pastel-ish. In this particular shot (and I've seen it in others, but it seems more pronounced here) it appears as if you've done some noise-reduction. It just seems smeared, somehow... or some might describe it as very, very slightly water-color painted. I'm just curious if maybe I'm not just seeing things (what with the old-age and all affecting my once-pristine eyesight...;)) or if I'm onto something here...? Pray, tell...sir.

C&C appreciated! *clickable*

My first impression is - where are my glasses? Nice idea, but as mentioned above, where's the subject? If you had done the same shot, but stopped it down to find a hyper-focal setting where everything was sharp, I'd have liked it better. My eyes want to roll on down the tracks, and explore the background, which just makes me feel blind in this shot. :) I like the idea. Just play around with it more. Cheers.

Thank you. Yes, it's a wonderful spot. It seems a long way from anywhere, yet it's just half an hour's walk from the nearest village.

Crackpot Hall is a farmhouse, dating from the 1700s, with barns - for animals - attached to both ends of the building, and sharing the same roof-line. There were lead mines nearby, which provided as much much employment in the area as farming. Ironically, it was mining subsistence that destroyed Crackpot Hall, and it was abandoned more than 50 years ago.

Pray, tell...sir. .

Most of the pix I've been posting on MR have been taking with one camera/lens combination: Nikon D200 & the 'kit' 18-70mm. This could be a limitation, though, for me, it seems to be fine: ie one less thing to think about when I'm taking pix.

I appreciate that lenses deliver slightly different 'qualities': more than just the change in focal length, etc. So my pix probably share a 'look' because they're nearly all taken with the 18-70. Because I sell my pix through a picture library (Alamy), I shoot on a tripod. This seemed to be the best way to meet Alamy's technical criteria with what most people would call an inferior lens. The tripod, too, would be a limitation for many people, but I've grown to enjoy the way it frees me up when I'm shooting. I often 'lock in' a composition, and shoot a series of pix over, say, an hour: more like shooting a film of an event than individual pix.

The lens wouldn't win any prizes for sharpness, but, with a tripod and appropriate apertures, I try to get the best out of it. So it's critical focussing and no camera shake (something that's hard to guarantee, hand-held, even with more expensive lenses). Also, I try to further the illusion of sharpness by, say, showing the subject lit against a shadowed background. If a pic looks sharp, then, to all intents and purposes, it is sharp... :)

For landscape pix I like part sun/part cloud conditions, which naturally provide more colour saturation (it's the difference, say, between a spotlight and a bare bulb hanging from the ceiling). So, Phil, my pictures will share a 'look' even before I start thinking about developing a personal style. I don't do any noise reduction, because, shooting at 100 ISO, there isn't any noise. And my PP is limited to tweaking the sliders in Aperture (shadow, contrast, exposure, saturation) as little as possible.

I don't know about the 'water colour' effect you mention, though the use of light and shade in my pix might make them look a bit 'painterly'.

I've expanded my kit with the addition of a 50mm 1.8, which gives a different 'feel' topic: something lighter, more etherial. And certainly sharper. It's just taking me time to get used to it.

It's fun to try something new; but it's also fun to get to know a simple camera/lens combo, so I can be more mindful of the scene in front of me than the equipment. I don't want to get into the mindset of assuming I'd take better pix if only I had a newer camera, faster lens, etc. When the pix don't come out as I want, the weak link in the photographic chain is likely to be me... :)

Sitka Spruce

Went hiking up into the woods on the front 40 acres on our place to limber up the old Canon A95. I was definitely hampered by the lack of wide-angle with this little point 'n shoot, and some obvious chromatic aberation/fringing... but figured the shot would convey some of the typical specimens of Sitka spruce in our little piece of Pacific northwest rainforest (those that are still standing...) These trees were in big demand for the aircraft industry during WWI, and until aluminum replaced wood in airplanes.

It's a great shot. If I was going to be picky, I'd say the pic would benefit from a bit of 'breathing space' around the bird (so the feet and tail aren't on the very edge of the frame), and if you'd taken half a step to the left, the post wouldn't be coming out of the gull's head. Yes, I know. Picky... ;)

This sounds like another vote for 'patience' and 'hanging around', in the 'patience vs Photoshop' debate. ;)

Terrific pic. It reminds me of all those myths about people turning into swans, with the image being just one frame from an ongoing narrative...

Yup, agree with the master here. I wonder if this applies to photographing events too cause I did both, one is hang around and took photos of whatever attracts me and another is stand at a spot, adjust the settings to get what I want (meaning do a few test shots) and look around for a moment and if it looks like something good is going to happen, prefocus and wait for it to happen. Anything I do wrong? or improvements?

For most of the time, eventhough I get less photos by doing the second technique but I am happy with most of it whereas the first one will end up with lots of photos but not that happy with the result. The problem with the second method is if I screw up the shots :(

You know what, I love your current village shots, it looks really subtle yet somehow beautifully composed.

Maybe this is the test of any method: that, one way or another, it produces better pictures. Or a better 'strike rate'. Or a more effective use of the time available. Having the camera on a tripod, and composition 'locked', may seem rather restricting... but I'm finding it frees me up to really watch what's happening, and what might happen next...

You know what, I love your current village shots, it looks really subtle yet somehow beautifully composed.

...My 'method' also makes my pix very still. If I wanted them to look dynamic, I'd have to change my way of working. Of course, a lot of the 'subtlety' comes from the fact that people in these little towns seem very keen to paint their house with pastel-coloured paints. ;)

Wow, where did you get that myth from? Never heard of it

Myths and legends from many different cultures feature people (usually women) turning into swans... or being turned into swans. Just google 'swan myth' or check out Wikipedia... :)

Pretty cool... another P&S?Thanks gkarris, the LX3 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmclx3/) is kind of a P&S. It's a compact camera that does have pretty extensive manual features if you want to use them, including RAW ability. This shot was in program (auto) mode although I did knock the exposure down to not blow out the highlights in the clouds.

Anyway, they bring those sheep in to graze the grass on a hill behind where I work. There were some cool clouds that day so I stopped off to snap a few pics on my way home.

I already shared my thoughts on this one in the contest thread. I think it's a terrific shot and gave my reasons there. All I could add would be the one thing you might consider to amplify its effect even more. If you cloned out the couple walking in the distance, it would ratchet up the tension another notch by further isolating the guy on the bench. Something to consider. :)

http://www.megethos.com/Phrasikleia/CallaLily2.jpgThanks! Yup, it's LA. All of these trips to Griffith Observatory have had a couple redeeming shots. :) Amazing detail on the pollen, by the way.

Atomicfission92, I like the general feel and composition, but the sky seems to drag any sort of possible mood down. Perhaps you could try it in better lighting?

Was this with a tilt shift lens?

No, just the kit 18-70 on a Nikon D200. I was shooting from an elevated garden, which put me at just the right height to keep the verticals straight(ish). And I finished the job (only a minor tweak) in Photoshop.

I posted this a couple weeks back in one of the photo contest on here but I like it so much I figured I would post it on here to get a little more feedback.

Erm, once you say you "like your picture so much", you've rather pre-empted any further comment. ;)

Went out to catch the moon rise tonight. All of a sudden it was there...

I started off shooting manual, at ISO 100 F8 1/40, but with the color of the moon, and the haze i guess there just was not quite enough light for that.

Anyway it was very red until it was well up in the sky.

Questions: When using a tripod should one use the lens VR or IS?
In low light situations when focusing manually, is here a trick to insure the focus?,

With my lens one focuses past infinity, which is not a good thing, especiall when added to my need for progressive eyeglasses,

F5/6 1/25 ISO 100 200 mm 4f-5.6f vr off, tripod

Click on the thumb to get a more accurate color rendtion, as the thumbnail is pretty dull.

Not too sure if this will interest anyone, but I get a daily quote, via email, of the words of Jiddhu Krishnamurti. Todays offering, below, is a concise summation of how (maybe even why) I take photos. :)

I wonder if you have ever walked along a crowded street, or a lonely road, and just looked at things without thought? There is a state of observation without the interference of thought. Though you are aware of everything about you, and you recognize the person, the mountain, the tree, or the oncoming car, yet the mind is not functioning in the usual pattern of thought. I don't know if this has ever happened to you. Do try it sometime when you are driving or walking. Just look without thought; observe without the reaction which breeds thought. Though you recognize color and form, though you see the stream, the car, the goat, the bus, there is no reaction, but merely negative observation; and that very state of so-called negative observation is action. Such a mind can utilize knowledge in carrying out what it has to do, but it is free of thought in the sense that it is not functioning in terms of reaction. With such a mind - a mind that is attentive without reaction - you can go to the office, and all the rest of it.

My dog, in one of her stranger moments...

http://www.coates3.com/modules/gallery2/d/242-2/melody02.jpg

She is quite old now, in rapidly declining health, and this is likely to be her last weekend with us :(
I just wanted to say, I feel for you. It's tough letting go of a faithful companion after a lot of years of tail-wagging and unconditional acceptance and love. I've been there. It's never easy, but the most loving gift you can give her is to let her go when it's time. She's done her job... and done it well. Now, it's your turn...
Peace be with you, cliff.

This is a shot I've been eying up every morning during my commute for about 2 months now. Every day I pass this point, look out the window and go "damn, that would make a great picture'

So this morning I grabbed my camera bag, got off my bus 2 stops earlier then ussual and finally grabbed it.

Thanks. We go to the vet for the last time tomorrow at 10:30. I've had this kid for nearly a third of my life, and there will be a dog-sized hole in it for a while.

On the positive side, I am looking forward to having floors that stay clean for more than 5 minutes or so for the first time in 16 years...

A calla lily is a very big flower. The bloom can reach about 15cm in length. My 60mm has a minimum focusing distance of 20cm. So I did crop, but only about 25 percent of the frame.

Try using a higher ISO about 800, also a longer exposure would probably give you better results for low light conditions. As for VR or IS lens it probably doesn't matter, they pretty much give you the same results.

Kudos.
